Disappointing stay at this central, expensive hotel. Whilst rooms are reasonably appointed, (as long as you don't need a wardrobe), it is not good for business travellers who either need a late night snack or an early morning breakfast. Although they charge for breakfast, You cannot get a hot breakfast before 0800h. Similarly after 2100h, all they offer is a...

I'm sorry about that, since we would be pleased to welcome you back. Our night porter is perfectly qualified to make a late night snack, or indeed an early breakfast (which is included in many of the room rates). It's true that the full a la carte breakfast needs the expert hand of a chef and so is available after...

Southernhay House is a beautiful boutique hotel, in an elegantly renovated building within easy access of the main area of the town. It is tastefully decorated and comfortable. We had two very tasty meals in the restaurant, and found the bar to be cosy with a good light food and drinks menu. The staff are really nice, friendly and personable,...

Thank you Colleen for your lovely review and I appreciate your comments. The size of the smaller rooms does not lend itself to classic wardrobes but for future visits please note that our larger rooms have good sized hanging rails - and, of course, we can always move one into your room (subject to occupancy) if desired. Certainly, the hotel...

Southernhay House is centrally located a couple of hundred meters behind Exeter Cathedral. This is a smart part of town, availability of on street parking is close to zero, it is possible to stop on the drive to unload/load the car, but then necessary to move off, so budget £20 per day and park round the corner in the underground...

Thank you for your review Mike; it's great that you enjoyed your stay and I appreciate your post. Your comments about the decor and room are especially appreciated. On parking - we are right in the centre of town - however, as you say, there is parking nearby and I would draw the readers' attention to the preferential rate (under...

Myself and my girlfriend stayed here on New Years Eve. The location is extremely central to Exeter and is a 30 second walk from Princess Hay. We stayed in 'Cotton' which has a huge and comfy bed with a bath tub at the end of it, and a big TV on the wall. We found the experience totally relaxing and...

I very much hope that you will come back James, for just such an escape as is needed on NYE....or when any other us-time is called for. Readers might note that our Cotton Room has by far the largest bed I have ever seen, let alone bought - and is ideal for lounging, rolling around and generally kicking back and...

This is a lovely hotel based on an elegant Exeter townhouse. The conversion has been done thoughtfully and with care. Many boutique hotels are simply vulgar or over-furnished in an idiosyncratic style or totally chi-chi and for those reason I avoid them. I half expected the same would be true of Southernhay House but happily I was very wrong. The...

Sebastian, that is a really lovely and very thoughtful review. Thank you for taking time to post. As the person responsible for the design elements, I am especially happy to read your comments (and I love someone who eschews the chi-chi). It's also nice that you recognise that the bathrooms in some rooms (not forgetting that all rooms needed complete...

What a beautiful hotel with the most friendly and helpful staff to make our stay simply perfect. It was our first visit to Exeter and we thoroughly enjoyed it, the location of the hotel makes it easy to access all parts of town and was just a minute or two walk from the Cathedral. Hi Claire, thank you for your review and for choosing SH for your first visit - I hope we may welcome you on many more. It's nice that you mention the bathroom and products - my personal fetish! Beautiful hotel with very individual rooms. Staff are very young but so friendly and helpful. Originally a Georgian mansion so no lift. Parking is difficult during working hours but fine overnight. Ideal base if you exploring South Devon.

Thank you for this nice post.
