The Devonshire Hotel captivates guests with its ideal location for exploring Torquay, despite being perched on a hill. Friendly and efficient staff contribute to the hotel's festive atmosphere and entertainment offerings, although some guests have encountered service inconsistencies and room issues. While the ambiance is generally celebrated, a few visitors suggest some rooms appear outdated. The hotel is commended for cleanliness and providing good value, including reasonable bar prices. Amenities like varied food options and comfortable rooms are appreciated, though remarks about dated decor and the need for improvements in room temperature regulation and shower facilities are not uncommon.

Our stay here was very nice. Comfortable room which we think had just been refurbished.
Staff very pleasant and of course three nights half price bar was a bonus. Bus service to
town which departed from hotel car park was very much appreciated and also bus service 64
had a bus stop just outside the hotel grounds.

The above hotel was well prepared with its covid 19 restrictions and restaurant tables were well laid out and table service was well organised as well as the bar service.. Masks had to be worn in all communal areas. The staff in restaurant and bar were very efficent and very pleasant, in fact all of the hotel staff were very helpful. Food was delicious and with a good choice. Would recommend the hotel to anyone. We also had a good evenings entertainment. WE travelled with Daishes Coaching Holidays who adhered to all the covid 19 rules, taking your temperature before allowing you on the coach and hand sanitizing. Coach driver Barry was very pleasant. would certainly travel with this company again.

This was our first experience of a Daish's hotel but I'm sure it won't be the last.
We were greeted by the Manager at reception on arrival who took our temperatures (thankfully ok!) and then showed us all the measures they'd implemented to combat the covid virus. We were both impressed and felt safe in the hotel environment. All members of staff including waiters wore face masks at all times.

The hotel is traditional and geared up for coach holidays primarily and they do it very well. Having said that there were quite a few self drive guests like ourselves.
Our room was a decent size with a double and single bed and had a shower over a bath as we'd requested. TV was a bit tiny but we don't bother much with TV when on holiday so it wasn't a problem. Lots of tea coffee and milk in the room.

Food was great with plenty of choice and a different menu over the 4 nights we were there. Kelvin was our waiter and did a great job. You keep the same table for the duration of your stay and remain there for the evening entertainment. Due to Covid there was no live entertainment but bingo and a quiz hosted by Simon who was very amusing with his dry sense of humour
Drinks in the bar were reasonably priced and Ian looked after us in there as well as hosting the quiz one night. I get the impression most of the staff have been there for years which is always a good sign plus lots of repeat guests staying

The hotel is about 15mins from a smallish beach with facilities but beware it's a steep climb back. There is an outside pool at the hotel plus a coffee shop open for snacks and lunches which I think is open until 5pm. The buses to and from town actually stop in the hotel car park so not far to walk for a bus!

We had a great time, met some nice people and enjoyed the friendliness of the staff. They've gone to great lengths to make everyone feel safe in the current crisis and work very hard and long hours.

Thank you all at The Devonshire for a lovely stay

Coach journey was good with Glen our Driver. We were welcomed given keys, directed to our room and suitcases arrived quickly. Pubic rooms were pleasant and met our expectation.
Our room was tidy and brightly, adequately sized with comfortable bed. We faced onto the main road but very little disturbance from traffic noise.
Tea tray had a selection of biscuits and we enjoyed the drinks. Bath room was good size neat and tidy

The location though near to station area enabled us to take walks alongside riverside. To town was a short walks which had interesting old Inns, side passageways and heritage square. Shops were varied and we could get most things we needed including snacks etc

The local bus services nearby on the two free days allowed us to explore the Beauty Lake District getting around to Bowness Pier, Nab Ferry, Claife Viewing Station, and Town of Windermere. On another day we visited Ambleside Pier, Old Roman Fort and via Hawkshead to Coniston to the Pier where we saw the Steam Yacht Gondola.

We enjoyed best inclusive coach outing to Grasmere up Kirkstone Pass via Ullswater to Keswick with enjoyable town visit. Then Lakes Distillery for a coffee exploring the shop and viewing the Alpacas.
We liked the least: - Disappointing breakfast on second day a rubber egg, card board toast and late coffee. The Management was told and Robb was put on the floor matters then improved. Quality control in kitchen and dining Room floor seemed missing, perhaps staff needs more training.

We booked three nights here after our holiday abroad was cancelled. We had a call from the hotel during the week before to tell us our family room was unavailable due to a water leak. They offered us two separate rooms which wasn't ideal as our children are 8&10 but we accepted as we needed a get away.

When we arrived we were given keys to rooms and were directed through the bar and up the stairs, we weren't directed to the elevator which I thought was odd, maybe because of covid measures.
We had rooms 37 & 38 but they unfortunately aren't next to each other but down the hall. They were both nice twin rooms towards the back of the hotel with modern bathrooms and were clean. Room 37 had a good WiFi signal but room 38 didn't.

There are lots of hand sanitizer stations and a one way system to help keep everyone safe.

The breakfast every day was lovely and we were allocated the same table every day. The service in the restaurant was excellent.

The TV in room 37 stopped working so I spoke to reception about it, it was fixed promptly whilst we were out. It did play up again on our last night though.

On our invoice I noticed in tiny writing that it said complimentary dinner so I enquired about this at reception as we'd only booked b&b, the lady on the desk wasn't sure but was able to confirm later that it was in fact to compensate us for having to be put in separate rooms so glad I spotted that. The dinner was lovely and tasty we really enjoyed it.

On our second and third night we sat in the bar and listened to the entertainment which was nice and provides a good atmosphere in the bar. We didn't realise on our first night and missed it as we weren't made aware when we arrived. The two chaps in the bar are friendly and helpful.

We used the pool two days and our children loved it, a lovely place to sit and chill after a day of sightseeing.

Overall this is a lovely hotel on the hill just by the harbour and near the town. We really enjoyed our stay here and would consider it again if we were to come to Torquay.

For various reasons, we have not been back to the Devonshire for over 10 years. A pleasant coach journey to Torquay and on arrival at the hotel were quickly given our room key and made our way to the room which was on the first floor of the main building. There was a lift which only held 2 people but was not a problem as there were only a handful of rooms on the first floor. Room was fine and serviced daily, no problems. Walk in shower and bathroom looked as if had been updated fairly recently. Room temperature could be controlled by the thermostat on the radiator and/or by opening the window.
In the restaurant tables are pre allocated and when being given your room key, your room number and table number are printed on the satisfaction survey that is given to you.
Enjoyed all meals that were served up. No problem there.
All staff were friendly. Cannot comment on the entertainment as did not stay for it, although others said that they enjoyed it.
The hotel helpfully provide a sheet giving times of the local buses from the hotel to the town and back. For the less mobile people these buses are invaluable as the hotel is at the top of fairly steep hill.

As always a visit to Torquay and the Devonshire Hotel was very enjoyable. Staff polite and helpful. Special mention to the lovely lady in the coffee shop who was friendly and helpful. Breakfast very good with a nice selection to choose from. Arriving at breakfast to find my choice of a pot of tea, milk and cups on table was very welcome. Three course evening meals were enjoyable with choice of three dishes for each course followed by tea or coffee. The regular two team bar staff were as always polite and helpful it was a pleasure to see them both again. Enjoyed the bingo and entertainment. The staff at the Devonshire Hotel are a very hard working team who do their best to resolve any problems brought to their attention quickly and politely. In what are difficult times for the hospitality industry they are doing well and I am confident that any areas in need of refurbishment will be dealt with. Will be returning and would recommend to anyone looking for a comfortable hotel with breakfast, evening meal, entertainment and coach included in an extremely reasonable price. Self drive also with a good sized car park.

Excellent break from dining experience to facilities to friendly staff. Dining room use hostess trolleys to get meals to you efficiently which were good quality for price paid. Games room and pool for children and adults use evening entertainment, bingo and a performer each evening. Bedrooms modern clean and well serviced. Only negative hotel is on a hill but buses stop at the door and one even comes in the grounds to pick up. Will definately come to Devonshire again as we have many times.

As some of the reviews state, this is mainly a Daish package holiday hotel. That does mean that the evening meals are set meals, there are choices of 3 items per course, but it's all mass produced. We didn't have evening meals here.
The breakfast was always the same. Choice of cereal, they only offered you marmalade if you had toast and the fried breakfast was basic at best.
The room was ok, if not for the fact that it was up three lots of stairs, narrow corridors and the room was fairly dated. The hotel stated they had Wifi throughout but you could barely get a 4G signal at the back of the hotel, not Wifi and even if you sat in the main lobby the Wifi was at best slow, if not rubbish.
The hotel is located on the top of a hill whichever way you went into town, one of the roads is poorly lighted and steep with no path for some of it, not the place to stay if you don't like walking too far.
All in all, if you're elderly, on a budget Daish holiday package this would suit, other than that, sorry, but didn't feel like the hotel could cope with standard requirements anymore.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I'm sorry to hear that the holiday was not to your liking, your comments are not indicative of those left by other guests. WIFI is available in the communal areas only and is advertised as such, there is a bus that runs regularly from town and stops at the hotel for those who do not wish to walk.
