We've been here before after it was acquired by the Richardson organisation but still called the Grosvenor (a name I prefer to Abbey Sands BTW as it suits the property better). Anyway, we like the Ridharson hotels, we've been to the Grand in Torquay before as well, you know the room will be comfy and you will get good service and good food, the staff will be courteous, friendly and helpful and they were! The room was a very good size on the first floor. It backed onto Belgrave road, which is busy and can be quite noisy early morning, presumably with people going to work. Not a problem if you keep the windows closed or get up early-ish, though, or if you are a good sleeper, I am not so the windows stayed closed. Breakfast was nicely cooked and served, not quite the variety of last time but this was more off-season and fewer guests and staff were in evidence. Hotel is in a good location for the beach and seafront jsut a few mins walk away and not far from the shops (15 mins walk) if you walk in the opposite-ish direction or take the scenic route to the shops via the seafront and iconic spiral bridge. We get emails from the Richardson organisation with details of offers and this was one and offered very good value IMO. We were supposed to go in January but wifey broke her arm in December and the hotel were very good at rearranging our stay to a later date in February for us. No complaints at all (the shower head was a bit dodgy but it did sort of work) we had a great short break and will doubtless be returning at some point in the future.

The staff here are very welcoming and accommodating. The hotel is a little dated in places, but our room looked as if it had recently been refurbed, and more importantly it was very clean. The bed was extremely comfortable and apart from a bit of noise from a party downstairs around midnight, which wasn’t a major issue, we slept really well. The view from our room was a bit off putting as it showed the roof over reception and rotting window frames of the adjacent room, hence the rating not quite being 5/5. The breakfast was lovely and replenished frequently, the staff were attentive but not intrusive. The location was great too, just a short walk to the beach and shops. (Bit chilly for the beach in December but a lovely bracing walk anyway) We wouldn’t hesitate to return.

I have no hesitation in awarding the Torquay Abbey Sands Hotel 5 STARS
Our booking of 18 nights, the time between the sale of our New Forest property and the purchase of our new Devon home, was much longer than the hotel’s usual booking and one that couldn’t really be classed as a holiday.
From walking in the door we were made welcome, the friendly staff went out of their way to ensure the room we were offered had everything we would need to make our long stay as comfortable as possible.
The hotel had been closed during lockdown and had only reopened a few days before, but all sensible Covid 19 care levels were in place. The hotel, as many in Torquay, is showing signs of its age but this paled into insignificance by the quality of the food, but more importantly, the friendliness and efficiency of the core team of its staff. We could not have been better looked after. Nothing we asked for was too much trouble for them.
Breakfast was well organised, and refills of tea and coffee were regularly offered, no queuing at a machine. We dined most evenings in the restaurant as we didn’t feel the need to seek other dining opportunities.
The spacious and comfortable terrace and lounge areas were a great space in which to read a good book, with drinks available on request.
Though we were eager to move into our new home we were very sorry to leave.
We cannot recommend Abbey Sands highly enough.
John and Christine Brown. June 2021.

Turned up in a grotty car park of a building which is shabby and run down from the outside. As you walk in the carpets look like they haven’t been cleaned in 50 years, which is consistent across the whole “hotel”. The room we were given was even worse. Nothing like the photos. The room was unclean, had a musty smell, and had dirty fingerprints and yellowing wallpaper on the walls. The bathroom was disgusting. I have genuinely stayed in hostels in Vietnam that were nicer than this. Definitely not paying £212 per night for this rubbish!

We complained to the receptionist who in fairness was as helpful as she could be, and gave us a different room which was better - at least the bathroom looked like it was refurbed within the last 50 years… This would have been to the detriment of the poor souls who arrived after we did, but she was doing her best to be helpful and understanding.

Didn’t dare go to the pool area based on everything else we had seen.

Overall, total waste of money and completely false advertising - don’t be fooled!

Just returned from a great weekend at Abbey Sands Hotel. We were greeted, in the car park, by Tom who showed us our dedicated parking slot, booked us in and shows us to our room.

The room and en suite was warm, clean and comfortable. There were the usual tea and coffee making facilities.

The food was excellent, breakfast, my favourite meal, was appealing and plentiful. (full English, continental and further options available)

We dined in the restaurant on Sunday. The meal was again excellent, served by a friendly waitress in a relaxed atmosphere.

The staff managed to achieve that wonderful balance between being helpful without interfering. Thank you all.

Located within walking distance of town centre, local theatre and close
to the sea. The Abbey Sands is ideally located.

We will definitely be going back, hopefully sometime soon.

My family and I have just returned from a weeks holiday in Torquay, we had 6 nights bed & breakfast at Abbey Sands.
Our party consists two adults and two children between 7 & 10 years old. We stayed in room 116, which is similar to a suit. It has a large double room for us adults and a room with two single beds just next door for the kids. We both have our own television & occasional chairs & desks.
In all honesty for the price paid we couldn’t fault it, and after reading the reviews prior to our arrival, I can’t tell you how much of a relief that was once we’d turned the key & had a peek inside.
No mould, no bad smells and definitely no bed bugs!
Our room was clean, functional and very spacious, it isn’t five star, it’s three star and that’s just what you get.

The staff however are a different matter, these people are definitely five star! From the greeting you get at breakfast to a friendly hello during the day, nothing is too much trouble.
Speaking of breakfast, there is plenty on offer including a traditional full English style affair which is top notch.
Other things on offer are croissants, pastries & yogurts etc.

I really wouldn’t hesitate booking here in the future, I’m aware that in a big hotel some rooms will inevitably be more tired than others and there is always pot luck in these matters.

Happy holidays

Arrived for a two day stay for our “50”th wedding Anniversary and was greeted by staff and showed parking space. That was lovely as it had our name on the reserved parking space.
On signing in we were given the key to our room, on entering the room we could not believe the size. It was so spacious and the view we could see the sea. Lovely.
Our children had ordered a bottle of wine and some strawberries coated in chocolate as a surprise for us.
Breakfast in the morning was help yourselves to cereals coffee juice etc, and then could order cooked. Plenty of it if you wanted.
We stayed in the hotel the first night and were shown to our table by Dace.
She was so helpful and friendly and looked after us well.
We used the indoor pool and jacuzzi and enjoyed every minute of it.
The next evening we decided to stay in the hotel for our evening meal as well,
Dace was again there to help and looking after us. We did have a little upset with the wrong meal which did spoil the evening. Dace was really upset about this. We hope the mistake won’t happen again.
We found the hotel clean and in walking distance to the theatre and the town.
We would like to say a big thank you to Dace for all her help and the rest of the staff.

My husband and I spent 5 days in Torquay and really enjoyed our time at Abbey Sands.

Room we stayed in had a slightly musty smell (most likely due to old carpets etc) it was however cleaned regularly and had a comfortable bed.

What made our stay special were definitely the staff members. Despite early arrival we were greeted and assisted by friendly reception staff; an excellent waiting staff made our breakfast and evening drinks feel very relaxing.

Limited free parking at the back and pre-booked paid parking at the front as per clear information on the website.

In general we've had a very pleasant stay.

Can’t speak highly enough about all hotel staff who assisted us in our week long family holiday stay at this hotel. Reception housekeeping and dining room staff all so friendly and helpful to us. The hotel itself is old school and to be fair does look dated and need of an upgrade in many respects. because of covid restrictions the gym was not available. we did make regular use of the indoor and outdoor pools although the weather was poor and prevented us fully enjoying the outdoor pool and gardens. on arrival we were disappointed with the interconnecting family room . but staff moved us to a better room overlooking the pool and gardens next day when one was available. breakfast was very good with hot and continental style food available. the hotel is a 5-10 minute easy walk from the train station. and situated next to a number of attractions. torquay town centre and harbour a 15 minute walk away. the hotel is close to bus routes with the 12 service particularly good allowing easy travel across the torbay waterfront from newton abbot to brixham. we found the £10 daily fare for our family group very good value for as much bus travel in the area as wanted. on balance the cost of our stay was a bit more than we usually pay but the hotel did provide a good base for an enjoyable week.

Good afternoon Billy M Thank you very much for your review – we highly value guest feedback, positive or negative as a way to improve the services that we offer. We were very pleased to read your comments about our staff and we are very proud of their level of customer service and we have forwarded your remarks to the managers within their respective departments. Regrettably, we are only beginning the process of refurbishment and development of our rooms and facilities while the hospitality sector recovers as a result of the recent lockdown. We certainly are lucky to be positioned where we are as travel within the Torquay area is very ideal for the hotel and we are happy to hear that you took advantage of this and that it made your stay more enjoyable. Once again, thank you very much for taking the time to write us a review and we look forward to welcoming you back to The Abbey Sands Hotel.

We have stayed at the Abbey Sands, many times, although not for a couple of years due to recent restrictions. We returned this week for a short stay and cannot fault our visit. Our room was cleaned to a high standard, very comfy bed and all the comforts you could need from a hotel room, food was well cooked and presented, at all meals. The staff were brilliant, very warm and friendly and made a fuss of our dog, giving treats and cuddles, if we didn't have work commitments we would have looked into extending our reservation. We will definitely be returning in the new year.
