The Imperial Torquay hotel captivates many guests with its elegant atmosphere and cliff-top location, offering stunning sea views close to the harbor. While the sea view rooms are lauded for their vistas, some travelers express disappointment in the dated condition of the accommodations. The hotel's cleanliness generally meets expectations, yet there are calls for refurbishment throughout. Though the staff's friendliness is often praised, the hotel's value is questioned, with concerns about the high costs relative to the experience provided.

My Husband booked the Imperial for a weeks stay just last week. It was so relaxing and such a brilliant location too.

We were in a Garden Room (No 26) near to the Spa with stunning views over the sea and the Garden. The Bathroom was spotless and our Daughter had her own room off ours with two super comfy single beds. We had two large singles pushed together to make a HUGE King size bed. You could not feel the gap between the beds and both the Duvet and Pillows were great quality and so comfortable.

We used the Swimming Pool almost daily and the Gym too. You do need to book a slot and be on time as with the COVID restrictions it is run like clockwork with Track and Trace and also daily temperature checks before using any facilities. (You will also be scanned when checking in.)

I used the SPA treatment rooms a great deal as I had booked treatments the week ahead of our arrival. The Decleor facial, eye treatments and full body massages were fantastic and really relaxing (and the products smell fantastic too!).

Having read other reviews, yes the Hotel is a little dated from the outside but internally, the lovely Chandeliers and flowers that greet you on arrival are beautiful and the staff are so attentive and professional. Maybe we were lucky with the Garden room but it was one of the nicest, most spacious rooms we have stayed in.

We slept with the Balcony doors open all week (even in the rain) and could wake up to the sun rise and changing clouds and sea, all from the end of our bed.

There was a queue for breakfast but with the COVID restrictions that is to be expected. Breakfast was lovely and again, fantastic views out to sea. We found going a little earlier (8am) that we barely queued.

We took our Dog (Dachshund) and the staff were again great with her and room service were brilliant. We were never rushed out so rooms could be cleaned and when we came back after being out for the day, the room has been fully cleaned with bedding and towels changed.

The location was a stroll (5 minutes) to the town with lots of Bars and restaurants nearby. No 7 and the Elephant were superb but again, make sure you book well in advance. There is a super restaurant / cafe with a beautiful outside seating area just down on the Quay (follow the steps on the right after the car park going down the hill) it is called Below Deck. We went for Breakfast there on a few mornings as it was more relaxed if we were running late and did not want to queue in the Hotel.

Fab food and great service (staff have a super sense of humour).

The Swimming Pool and Gym at the Imperial are a bit small but more than adequate for a dip and a work out, the Grounds are really well maintained and make for a nice stroll on an evening.

Recommend for families, couples and people who like to holiday with their pooches.

We visited the Imperial on a Sunday afternoon as we were staying locally and we were not at all happy with our hotel and wanted to find an alternative for next time.
Covid restrictions were in place and we waited a short time to talk to the⁷ very helpful young ladies on the reception desk.
The entrance area was beautiful, tastefully furnished with a lovely floral arrangement that had a beautiful fragrance.
We wanted to see if the hotel was
wheelchair friendly, we toured the public rooms all of which were tastefully⁹ decorated and a lot had fantastic views.
We were asked if we wanted help by a very helpful lady when we went to view the restaurant. She advised of how to access the restaurant, where the lifts and ramp were and the disabled toilet. The tables
were all dressed with linen table cloths and napkins. We also viewed the menu on display outside the restaurant and prices looked good.
We viewed the bar and a waiter asked if we wanted serving.
We had to ask a member of housekeeper where the disabled toilet was. She gave us directions to the very clean and well laid out disabled toilet and also showed us a large (unoccupied by a guest) bedroom with a fantastic view and glass balcony.
We were very impressed with the bedroom and how everything in the hotel looked and smelt very clean and how helpful 5 members of staff dealt with our enquiry.
We are looking forward to staying at the Imperial next time we visit Torquay.

Before booking, we had emailed to try and book or ask some questions but no one ever responded to our emails (we ended up booking online). We also tried calling several times to book the swimming pool but no one ever answered the phone.

Once we arrived though, the reception staff were very welcoming and friendly.

We booked a suite which for a 4 star hotel should have been pretty decent, but our room was tired and outdated with awful 90s decor and battered up furniture. We couldn’t access the balcony supposedly due to maintenance which was a massive disappointment. Apparently there was a note about this on the website but we did not see this, nor did the check-in staff mention it when we arrived. It didn’t look like any maintenance was being carried out either!

We ordered room service as we didn’t want to risk catching COVID in the hotel restaurant but there was very little choice for vegans or vegetarians. My husband had a bowl of soup for dinner as that was all they could offer.

The kitchenette in our suite was a little pointless as there wasn’t anything useful in there besides the kettle. Some cutlery or plates or even a towel or something in there to wash up our cups would have been handy.

We also couldn’t book a slot at the pool which was disappointing, but we managed a dip in the sea instead.

Overall we had a nice stay as the location is perfect, and despite not getting onto the balcony, the views were still beautiful.

We booked the Winter Getaway & upgraded to a De-Luxe room. We asked for the king sized twin bed option. The entrance is very impressive with glorious chandeliers & all public lounges are smart and spotless.
Our room, 44, was large with a beautiful view and balcony, turned out to be an Accessible room for wheelchairs users complete with lots of pull cords! I returned to Reception & was told this was the room I had booked, no it wasn't, then with true Basil Fawlty logic I was told "Well you did ask for a twin bedded room" so there you are twin bedded equals wheelchair user. As other half had already started to unpack I didn't change the room which was a mistake as it had the noisiest plumbing imaginably complete with gurgling sink. The furniture was scuffed and the table badly damaged and badly repaired. One of the bed lights bulbs didn't work and it took housekeeping an hour to arrive to change it. Odd splashes of something white in the wardrobe and leatherette bucket seat chair had split in it and scuffs marks.
A charge of £7 a night for parking or £15 to park in the garage is unacceptable.
Following complaints from us our bill was adjusted but would never return or recommend. Breakfast good, staff good, dinner food 3/10 because the bread was good. Management needs to address issues, see other reviews and take notice.
Few guests staying at the hotel should be a sending out a message.

Dear heloiseDevon We are incredibly sorry that we did not resolve the room allocation for you and that there were shortfalls with the condition of the room and the food offering at dinner. We have already acted upon your feedback and will continue to do so until we are satisfied we have completely resolved the issues. After having had 3 holidays cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions we decided on a 10 night stay in the Imperial. Check in was good. The room we had been allocated was clean, spacious and had a beautiful view across Torbay. Rooms were cleaned daily with toiletries replenished and towels changed.
The bed was adequate, however the mattresses were 2 singles zipped together and 2 single mattress toppers placed on the top. Toppers were flat and lumpy, other hotels we have stayed in have a full king size topper, which is what was expected and would avoid the gap towards the middle of the bed.
Breakfast was good value for money and was either served to your room or in the restaurant. There was a good menu to chose from and if you wanted a larger cooked breakfast you only had to ask.
We paid in advance for the evening meal(this I wouldn’t recommend) the set menu was repetitive and was not to our tastes, we were able change to eat in the bar, choosing from the bar menu, slightly more choice but inconsistent and not value for money, poorly presented and sub standard service. Bar service is slow, due to Covid restrictions you are asked to take a seat and a waiter will come and take your order, it is the norm to wait 30 mins plus for the waiter to turn up to take your order and then as long again to get your drink. We did raise this issue with the staff and were told well it’s Covid, we are short of staff and can’t take any more. Not an acceptable excuse for poor service as there were 2 waiters Ilias and Ben who are a credit to the hotel, always helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them.
The spa area was good and the indoor pool was warm and you booked a 30 min slot to suit, temperature taken before entry, no more than 6 in the pool at the same time.
After our experience here we wouldn’t chose to revisit as we felt that the prices charged were too high for the service received.

The shabby, worn exterior of this place could be marketed as part of its “faded grande dame” charm so let’s leave that aside. The lobby is stunning.

The other bits that were good here were in effect things I’d paid extra for and I’d seriously caution anyone against staying without selecting one of the better rooms- lovely big room with plenty of storage; stunning view across the bay to Paignton and Brixham; large balcony; huge bed that was nice and comfy. The bathroom was well appointed with toiletries and shower (one over bath) was great and really powerful. Interior of room very clean; matter of choice whether tired furniture and decor is off putting. For me, I can live with it if everything else is in place.

Unfortunately the attention to detail and level of customer service was not what I’d expect from a hotel that holds itself out as one of the best in the area. For a start, although I’d booked a balcony room many weeks in advance when we were still in lockdown, because I was a sole traveller I was shoved in a downstairs room with a view partially obscured by thick trees. My request to move to a higher floor was not met. Apparently on a Sunday coming out of lockdown they were all booked out for balcony rooms. That aside, when I asked for a cloth so I could clean the utterly filthy balcony furniture, I got a lack of eye contact, tart response and not a hint of apology that I’d just informed them their balcony was filthy. We’re not talking about 24 hours of sand - the thing hadn’t had been cleaned in god knows how long. Not good enough!

The lady from housekeeping did come promptly and cleaned the furniture so that was rectified (leaving aside the entire outdoor area was filthy, full of webs and ingrained dirt). She was very much more willing and pleasant than the receptionist who sent her.

Car park is £7.

We booked a 3 night stay in September 2020 for my wife's birthday.

The Positives
Great location. Room was large and clean. Bed comfortable. Staff as ever were polite and helpful so well done to them. There were just too few of them for a hotel we were told was full.

Restaurant and bar
Long wait of 45 mins for breakfast on 16/9. Tables spaced well but no thought seems to have been given to customer flows - uncomfortable having other guests walking past our table within 1m distance of us whilst we were seated.
Only on one occasion did we see staff sanitising touch points on chairs/tables/cruet sets when tables were being prepped for the next guest.
The flow of guests and sanitising arrangements in the restaurant were poor.
The bar area was poor having to queue for drinks with no table service. Insufficient staff in restaurant and bar.

Online concierge
Online concierge service failed. Requested the flower, chocolate and fizz package for arrival for my wife’s 60th birthday. Nothing in the room. Was very disappointed. Grateful for Hotel Manager’s intervention whilst at the hotel to provide this foc later on during our stay.

Covid arrangements
The Covid 19 arrangements need a re-think. Didn't see any sanitising of public areas during the 3 day stay or notices around the lift areas re social distancing. They could design a breakfast booking system to prevent long queues of people running along the corridor crossing the main entrance to the hotel and especially at the pinch point of the entrance/exit to the restaurant. Need to lay down routes for guest exit from the restaurant to avoid people sat at tables. Need to be prepared to challenge the large number of guests not wearing masks or who had theirs propped under their chin in public areas.

Conclusion
We've been to the Hotel on numerous occasions in the past; would need considerable reassurance if we were to consider ever returning. I've had the misfortune of having contracted the virus in March 2020. We didn't feel safe at the Hotel. They charged top rate (£777) for 3 nights DBB in a 4-star hotel. On this occasion we felt cheated.

The hotel was adequate, plenty of room in the public spaces, so felt social distancing was not a problem. Had a balcony sea view room, the decor is a bit worn, but we enjoyed sitting out on the balcony in the sun. The toiletries and water were replenished daily. Had dinner in the hotel first night, and it was a good job we had eaten at lunch time. it was just ok, but not good value for money, and very small portions. They served pate without any biscuit or toast, and it could have been consumed in one bite. The main courses were all very sparse. We certainly did not eat there again. A very nice barmaid was very helpful with suggestions of what to see and where to go. The staff on the whole were very pleasant and friendly, but service was very slow, as there were not enough staff on duty. We paid £7 per night for car parking, and struggled most nights to get parked. The spaces mostly being too small for modern cars, and some people being very selfish and parking over two spaces. Overall we had a good break, would we go back? Probably not!

I stay away a lot of hotels due to my job in normal times and have to say this was by far the worst room for filth I have had the misfortune to stay in.
We booked the Imperial on the basis of position and quality so we thought!! Far from it.
Entering the hotel reception they seemed to take Covid seriously not so this was only skin deep as the saying goes no social distancing or ppe worn by staff no surfaces cleaned whilst in public areas were done.
The room a deluxe king bed sea view balcony on floor 4 we thought would be fabulous.
Initial view tired and damaged furniture one side cabinet had a huge burn.
But that was not the real shock the dirty surfaces smeared TV screen, mirrors, glass on doors etc horrendous, even worse there was bird droppings inside the room and dried blood on balcony tiles, grab rail and on bathroom tiles it was evident there is no floor cleaning, the carpet had not been vacuumed with debris including a plastic tag.
Bed has no mattress protector and pillows have no mattress protectors so there is no protection from body fluids of past residents.
On raising this with the hotel manager when I finally got through the block of staff to avoid meeting me, she seemed relatively unconcerned and said yes furniture was old and would send staff to clean room well that was done to a level of a 5 year old.
We had to leave and it completely ruined our weekend with no formal apology at any time.
For supposedly a top hotel in Torquay well there are better cleaner rooms in lower cost hotels without naming them.
A ruined weekend we will never forget or get back.

My partner and I visited the hotel for what we were hoping would be a lovely relaxing spa day. Unfortunately, our experience was less than relaxing and we both left really deflated and disappointed.

The spa faculties, including the change rooms, treatment rooms, relaxation room, swimming room etc all looked tired, dated and in need of a good clean.

During our treatments, through no fault of the hotel staff, the fire alarm was activated. The Staff all seemed confused and unsure of the procedure. The treatment rooms where cold and the music kept skipping so trying to relax was not at all easy.

We decided the only way to warm up would be a nice hot shower, to be met with barley warm water at a none peak time was utterly disheartening.

We had lunch in the lounge bar, which had a lovely view, and that's were the compliments stop. The serving staff were not helpful or happy. The food serve was slow and the food cold when it did arrive then to be charged £7.10 for a cup of tea, when at most spas a drink is included within your package. Again the bar is in desperate need of re-decorating and updating.

We decided we had no need to stay and left early.

I can not and will not be recommending this hotel
