The Headland Hotel & Spa offers a comfortable ambiance set against a picturesque backdrop that many guests admire, especially for its proximity to the beach, despite some noting the location's hilly terrain. Opinions on value are mixed, with praise for the hotel's worth contrasting criticism about extra fees. While the gardens and entertainment add to the hotel's charm, there's a consensus that some areas could benefit from modernization. Room experiences vary, with negative remarks about their dated feel, yet the views and size receive compliments. Service at the hotel generally receives accolades for staff friendliness, although there are occasional service inconsistencies. The amenities, including the spa and hydro pools, are highlights, despite mentions of additional costs and the need for updates.

We were just looking for somewhere for a post Christmas weekend and The Headland ticked all the boxes
A fantastic location with some stunning views
Every member of staff needs to be commended for the standard of service and welcome offered
The food was of the highest standard and very well presented. Breakfast was particularly good
The main circulation and restaurants were very well maintained and presented.
We would have scored 5 stars but there were a few little things that could have been better
The parking is a bit of an issue and we ended up the road on the street
The room we had was clean and functional but the bathroom was a little dated
The changing facilities in the spa/hydro pool area are too small - they are wet rooms and as they day went on got wetter and wetter
There was not enough seating around the pool area so unless you were actually in the pool there was no where to relax
However this being said the hotel offers exceptional value for money and we would defiantly go back

We stayed here for three nights in August, overall it was a lovely hotel and we were very impressed. We had two rooms, I was in a twin room so I can only give my thoughts on that. We were on the very bottom floor known as the 'garden floor' so our bedroom overlooked the beautifully kept gardens around the hotel. On the lower floors we noticed a pungent damp smell which was supported by the fact that there were moths absolutely everywhere flying around the staircase. There was a large dead one on the window ledge as we walked down the stairs and it stayed there for the duration of our stay so maybe the public areas could do with some more cleaning. There were also quite a lot of spiders, including a large one in our bathroom. I felt the dark red carpet throughout most of the hotel made it feel like a funeral home. Nevertheless, the beds were comfy, however the duvet was extremely heavy, I guess I'm just used to light duvets. Anyway, the bar area was excellent, we were very impressed with the range of foods for lunch and 'tea' available in the bar area at very reasonable prices. We had dinner one night in the hotel and that was also very tasty. The same can also be said for the breakfast, although in my opinion the Full English Breakfast portion felt a little small with only one piece of bacon, one sausage, one egg, a small pot of beens, some mushrooms and a tomato. The staff were absolutely amazing, extremely polite and respectful, an absolute credit to the hotel! The outdoor seating area by the bar has an amazing view of the sea. To get to Torquay harbour you can either walk down the roads or take a slight detour around the coastal pathway starting right outside the hotel, which involved a lot of steps up and down but it was worth it. One thing which seemed to be quite an issue was parking, I'm not sure if staff use the hotel car park, but there were a few cars which just sat there in the same spaces and didn't move for days. We were lucky and managed to find spaces but others had to park in nearby streets quite a walk from the hotel. If you don't wish to drive down to the harbour, you can simply ask reception to book you a taxi, we were charged £3.50 to get down there. However, when taking taxis from the taxi rank in the harbour it was around £6 back up the hill so I'm guessing the hotel knows the best companies to go with. As a side note, one of the local taxi drivers thought we had made a good choice of hotel to go to in Torquay so that's something to go by. Overall, quite a pleasant stay, and we would return.

We had a lovely stay at the Headland Hotel. The weather was fantastic, which complimented our sea view room. The location couldn't have been better - tucked away from the main road, nice and quiet with gorgeous views and surroundings. Unfortunately we were let down by the food in the restaurant. The restaurant staff were suited and booted and with it being a well kept hotel in a great location we expected the food to be to the same standard. However, we very disappointed with bland tasteless food, no check back and left hungry. There was no apology from the restaurant manager. Safe to say we ate out for the rest of the holiday.

One negative about the family room, we didn't have a fridge - as a family with a toddler it would have been ideal, especially in temperatures of 36 degrees!

Lovely hotel quite near Torquay town with beautiful sea views. Opportunity to walk alongside the headland although this walk is not suitable for young children or persons with mobility restrictions.

All hotel staff were generally very pleasant and helpful. They were very busy however as the hotel was full and also because of covid 19 hotel accommodation requirements.

Because of current Covid 19 restrictions, housekeeping staff are not allowed into your deep cleaned room during your stay. Therefore you need to request change of towels, bedding tea/coffee etc; replenishment of toiletries etc as required which is a bit of a nuisance as is disposing of room bin rubbish. I expect that this is however generally an issue for most hotels.

I requsted I change my single basic room after the first night of a week stay as the room was extremely small, dark and badly in need of refurbishment. There was a definite improvement in the 2nd room I was allocated but it still in need a refurbishment (anaglypta wallpaper is neither attractive or practical 😬)

Breakfast was good with plenty of choice as was dinner. Dinner was a bit hit or miss throughout the week. Some evenings my 5 course meal was delightful and other evenings just acceptable.

Lovely bar area and outdoor seating for drinks and meals.

Parking area is restricted so I found myself parking a few hundred yards away several days after being out visiting family living locally but was not a problem for me specifically.

I would definitely stay there again and I have signed up for the Hotel's special deals newsletter.

We enjoyed 4 days b&b, the room was a generous size with a sea view and a very nicely kitted out bathroom, also a good size. Breakfast had all UK options available and the staff here as elsewhere in the hotel were very professional. As the name suggests a 10 minute walk up a steep hill from central Torquay however all the good restaurants are on this side of town and the walk back will help your dinner go down. Bar with entertainment in the evening and reasonable prices, bar food available all day, hot dishes at lunchtime. There is a restaurant but in the evening I imagine they have to cater for full board residents so the menu although very cheap is limited. A deciding factor in us choosing The Headland was that most of the other hotels had reviews highlighting the poor state of repair & maintenance. No such problem here, although a big old building, beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean in all areas.

We booked a mid-week break including breakfast & dinner, the room had a fabulous view over the gardens & sea beyond. The food was, hot, fresh & very tasty with a good selection to choose from. All staff from the moment we arrived to the time we left were extremely friendly & professional during these unprecedent times, despite having to wear masks. There was plenty of hand sanitizer, & regular cleaning of the tables in the restaurant, bar & public areas. We would like to thank Connor & Abby in the restaurant for their great service & attention during our stay. We would certainly stay again if we were in the area & would highly recommend to others .
We had fabulous weather during our stay but would suggest installing patio heaters or some form of heating out on the front patio as beautiful views but too chilly to enjoy a drink outside once the sun goes down.
Only negative i can find is our room was quite dusty, especially around the floor of the radiator, hadn't been given a good clean for some time!!!

The hotel is absolutely stunning but very hard to find but worth the search. The decor is very grand and the views are stunning!

The staff were absolutely wonderful and gave faultless customer service making it a lovely break. The lounge and bar area was lovely to sit and relax With gorgeous views and though we weren’t having food we could see some beautiful dishes being served.

The facilities were excellent and spacious especially with COVID in mind. The rooms we had were very basic and could do with redecoration but they weren’t expensive so value for money. The shower was one of the gym showers that don’t move so that’s my only criticism of the room itself.

The break we had was delicious but the full english was very small with just one sausage bacon and egg and not a hash brown or fried break in site!! It was more of a half breakfast which was disappointing as when you go away you expect a nice big brekkie to set you up for the day, couldn’t fault the quality of the food though it was lovely!

Our only real concern was over the safety measures regarding Covid-19. It was well organised during the evening however we noticed most people were walking around the hotel and queueing for breakfast without masks and no staff seemed to be asking them to put one on, we also noticed quite a few staff without them so it wasn’t as safe as we had thought it would be.

Overall a great hotel with all the right touches of luxury that we enjoyed staying in and we would definitely recommend and will return in the future.

This was our 2nd stay at The Headland. This time we had messaged ahead to request a room with a bath or at least a shower that an average person could fit in, and we were delighted to be given room 154 which has a large separate bathroom [with shower in bath]. The room was warm and the incredibly squeaky floor boards added to the charm of this slightly tired hotel. The bed was incredible comfy and we both slept well for our 2 night stay. We had a slight issue with the fact the shaver point in the bathroom mirror was just a pretend one, but reception managed to charge the run down tooth brush in another room for us [very helpful]. Breakfast was adequate, but some of the younger staff could benefit from a bit of training i.e. clear used plates from tables where people are still sat rather than tables where people had already left. A slight delay in taking our cooked food order but the staff were pleasant and the coffee was good and hot. We saw they had live entertainment each night but we had engagements outside of the hotel in the evenings so did not benefit from that delight. During our stay they had a 'coach load in' but this did not affect the quality of our stay in anyway and the staff coped well. I would say the only downside or negative comment was the overwhelming smell of chlorine/bleach type smell as you entered the foyer and everywhere on the ground floor - you felt you were in a local swimming pool rather than a hotel. Would we return again - yes definitely if only for the welcoming reception staff and slightly quirky charm of this hill top treasure.

After some initial disappointment with a mediochre room in what we first thought was a typical Torquay Fawlty Towers style fifties unsophisticated hotel, the spectacular views, coupled to a genuinely enthusiastic staff, superb food gave us a great weekend base in which to explore Torbay and it's connurbation. We checked out Paignton, Brixham, Dartmouth, Teignmouth, Dawlish and the Babbacombe model village.
The staff were all masked, there was a plethora of hand sanitisers and we felt as safe from the 'plague' as can be expected.
A great team dealing with difficult circumstances and providing excellent service and cleanliness, despite a shall we say 'tired' hotel.

Stayed at this hotel for 4 nights with my partner. Lovely staff, room was very spacious and comfortable, in need of a little upkeep, tired furniture and decorating needs doing, very annoying dripping noise all night out of the window which meant we had to shut it at night but on the whole comfy bed and clean bathroom. We used the spa which was lovely although i do think use of the hydro pool should be included in the price, you have to pay £5 per person to use it but was lovely to have it to ourselves. Bar area lovely lots of choice of drink, we had lunch once at the hotel very nice. Breakfast was nice, a little chaotic some mornings, some mornings we sat for ages while others coming in after got served first and sometimes hot food came out before our drinks, think they need a better system there, breakfast was lovely lots of choices do think the cooked breakfast could be a little bigger at least 2 bits of bacon would be nice and a hash brown on offer.
Be aware parking a nightmare sometimes and you may have to walk up some steep hills with your luggage. On the whole though we enjoyed our stay, the location and views amazing lovely coastal walk, lots of steps! We would stay again.
