I have stayed here 4 times and always had an enjoyable experience. The rooms and corridors may be dated, but the hotel is in a nice location with easy parking, and the public areas are spacious, modern, comfortable and relaxing. We found the staff to be helpful and efficient. Self service breakfast and dinner were acceptable (and actually an improvement on the Shearings era), and I was pleased to see a bottle of hand sanitizer on every dining table and spare masks available at the counter. The evening entertainment was good and WiFi worked! So overall, the Trecarn may not be the best hotel in Torbay, but for what you pay, I consider it to be a good base for a visit to Babbacombe.

Upon arrival, the hotel was lit up very well in the dark! Walking into reception, we were welcomed by a receptionist who dealt with us well. The other receptionist was chatting to an unknown guy asking for eachother's 'rizzlas', she had terrible body language (leaning back on her chair, no eye contact etc) in front of us.
After being told where our room was, we walked along the smelly, old, creaky corridors. The stench was old, stale and dusty.
Opening our door, we found the padlock on the inside of the door was loose, very untrustworthy. The whole room's floor was on edge, like a slight slope, of course with extra loud creaky floorboards.
First off, the bathroom was covered in dust, hairs stuck to the wall, mould and mildew in the shower edges. The toilet itself was old and wonky, sink taps were odd, dust and dirt around edges of whole room. There was some rubbish left on the toilet seat, and the toilet bin lid was not on the toilet bin, but on the edge of it.

The statement artwork above the bed was wonky also, which looked like it had been adjusted like that on purpose! As I look at the dusty bedside tables, I notice the wardrobe doors obviously don't shut. I move the dirty, old fashioned looking curtains to look out the window, yet I see a disappointing view of the back of the hotel.. ladders, pipes and all. We are given a 'Tesco Freeze Bag' for our tea bags, sugar and coffee sachets, which was clearly unprofessional and odd.

Just to top it all off, a plaster was used to hold the batteries in the remote controller. And there was a group of men talking loudly and banging around next door, which stopped us from sleeping. A nasty cannabis stench was coming through the walls of our room, it felt disgusting.

We went to reception to ask to be relocated to another room, the guy behind reception, dressed in a tracksuit, asked us to come back in 5 minutes to see someone else at reception.

My advice is? Just don't go here if you want a decent hotel with a decent hotel room with a decent night's sleep. 👍

This hotel is far enough out of Torquay itself with its own local shops in a fairly bohemian area. Therefore just a short walk to restaurants and cafes, a Tesco Express and a Lidl a little further. A short walk to the cliff top with lovely views. I found the staff friendly, but only really communicated on checking in and out. Worth pointing out that if you've forgotten a USB charger... there's one hidden inside the bathroom light/shaver unit (who knew ?) !

Here's where I feel the hotel failed. I was pleased to find a 'Room Sanitised' sticker on the door, but once in I'm not sure what or how it had been. I've attached photos. Firstly, on entering the room in daylight I was bemused as to why the curtains of both windows were pulled closed. On opening I found out why... no view other that other rooms and fire escapes. Whilst the TV Remote was in a 'Sanitised' bag, the remote itself was absolutely filthy ! I'm 6ft but there was no way anyone can sit straight on the toilet as the door is in the way. The soap dish in the shower hadn't been cleaned in months. The shower tray was clearly blocked and after only a few minutes was up to my ankles without draining (I bought this to the managements attention). The mattress was extremely uncomfortable, the old fashioned springs dig into you through the night. When surfaces are cleaned the spray appears to cover the wall rather than the surface. The white UPVC windows appear to have never been cleaned, covered with black mould. Now a hint for others... the room milk, tea and coffee are sealed in a sanitised bag. The coffee sticks are a nasty, cheap (bitter) Cash & Carry variety. If you go downstairs and walk through the dining room, there is a huge bowl of Nescafe sticks, upgrade yourself !

Upon departing home and travelling to the hotel I decided to ring and verify that my room was ready as we had read a few reviews highlighting double-booked rooms or rooms not prepared in time for the guests. I spoke to a very polite and helpful man who was quite certain out room was ready and sanitized.

We arrived at the hotel on the Friday evening to be greeted by a fairly helpful receptionist who checked us in, and told us that sadly we'd have to park on the road and not in the car park.

After passing through the damp smelling corridor we entered our room which on first glance was OK. After five minutes of walking around the room I found myself dissatisfied.

1. There was a disgusting brown mark on the carpet.
2. The previous customer's children's clothes were still in the bedside cabinet.
3. The shower was dripping out onto the bathroom floor.
4. Then when I went to draw the curtains I noticed the windows were horribly greasy and had definitely not been cleaned.

The four issues above immediately contradicted the words on the phone earlier that evening which were "room is ready and sanitized".

We went down to reception and the man tried his best to find us another room, but sadly none were available. Instead he came and re sanitized our room and removed the clothes. Annoyingly this did not include the windows.

Saturday was very eventful, after a lovely day in Torquay after our very average overpriced breakfast we returned to our room and went to sleep, to be woken up a few hours later at midnight by a blaring loud fire alarm, we rushed in nothing but our nightclothes with many other holidaymakers out into the car park.

Not ONE single member of staff came into the car park to tell us it was safe to readmit ourselves into the building.
A local man sat on one of the outdoor tables drinking kindly informed us that it was a regular occurrence to kicked out by a midnight fire alarm.

As we passed reception going back to our room, the receptionist was not very concerned in telling each guest that it was a false alarm - shame she didn't get out of her chair and invite us all in from the car park!

Eventually we fell back to sleep in our boiling hot room for a little bit of sleep before we checked out on Sunday. The receptionist was very short and sweet with our checking out- No wonder! I don't expect she wanted to hear any more complaints from the night before!

To sum it up, Its a cheap hotel, you pay a couple of quid, get a bed, a freezing cold shower and if you're really lucky you might get a midnight fire escape excursion.

For the past 50 years I operated coaches and do consider myself something of an expert where hotels are concerned.

To call this place a hotel is an insult to the industry as a whole. Nothing about this hotel is as advertised.

On arrival I along with at least 15 other people were informed we did not hold a booking for the nights accommodation despite having confirmation from the hotels website.

After around half an hour of arguing with the various members of staff, the manageress appeared and requested I stop shouting at the staff members, and asked me to take a seat in the lounge whilst she endeavoured to sort out the problem of their making. Around half an hour later a member of staff appeared and confirmed my booking for 2 single rooms. I then requested them to show me the car park to park my vehicle as advertised on their website, I was then informed the hotel had not had a car parking facilities for some time as the space advertised was now used as a recreation area. To be fair I had only just driven 255 miles and was probably not in the best frame of mind to be told I did not hold a booking. Let alone to be told there wasn't any parking facilities.

After finding somewhere to park my vehicle myself and my colleague went to our rooms, mine contained en suite facilities, a double bed, a television, double wardrobe and one or two other items. This included what appeared to be a badly stained carpet.

On settling in I sat on the bed to empty my belongings and noticed what appeared to be a black dot on the white bed sheet, on approaching the black dot IT JUMPED QUITE HIGH and disappeared, to quick for me to get a photo unfortunately.

My colleague and myself after settling in felt quite hungry and decided to have an evening meal in the hotel, it turned out the only thing available for the main meal was Chicken and Chips (We had KFC on the way down to the resort) so decided to have the only other option which was Fish and Chips. On sitting at the table we could not help but notice the decor this was a mixture of out dated paint work, window frames seemed to be falling apart and rotten, windows that would not close and most of the area seemed like it had not been cleaned for a long while. (Photos to prove).

On retiring for the night I could not help but notice every-time someone went passed my room the bed went up and down, this was also confirmed by my colleague that was in a different part of the hotel to myself. In addition when cleaning my teeth and washing I found that after 3 minutes we did not need the cold water tap as the hot water tap ran cold.

I have to say although not piping hot the breakfast wasn't too bad.

It seemed to me that the hotel like the aircraft industry had taken on too many peoples bookings so that on the night they were completely full. Unfortunately this does not help the people that made bookings but were turned away on arrival.

Further investigation by myself indicating that a large coach company used to use this hotel but for some mysterious reason who have now chosen not to use the hotel any longer.

It also seems strange to me that on speaking to local trades people they felt sorry for me after finding out where I stayed.

First of all I would like to point out like others may of done I have read many reviews regards this hotel prior deciding to book a weeks break for me and my wife.

To be completely frank and to the point this hotel is totally disgusting in every manner. Over many year we have stayed in many hotels throughout the UK and abroad but have never ever stayed in such a dire place as the Trecarn.

I would like to point out those whom say you get what you pay for must have very low standards as I shall give you some examples from our recent visit, I have decided to list the many faults this hotel has but I must include the manager of the hotel was never available to speak to us and the receptionist informed us that she did not know when the manager would be available?

The following is what is to be expected should you decide to waste your time and money,

No management available / reception NOT aware of managers timetable, very disorganised;

Members of staff dressed and wearing non uniform and baseball caps, very scruffy appearance;

Meals very sub standard and food was cold, restaurant staff not in uniform and one particular gentleman had a body odour problem which put my wife completely off her food;

Carpets throughout hotel looked threadbare and ripped, this is definitely a hazard;

Actual room was very dirty, food wrappers found underneath bed, bed linen was stained, only one pillow, bathroom had pubic hairs in bath, strong smell of urine, bath was stained, toilet was loose and overall this was not what you would expect,

Very expensive bar prices,

Hotel is like a rabbit run, so many stairs and corridors and lift was not working,

Rooms not cleaned regularly and when the housekeeper did arrive she informed us she only gets a total of twelve minutes to clean the entire room,

As above these are some of the observations noted which I have sent a complaint to the hotels head office, I would add that the place is overall very dirty, dated and has several homeless people staying at the hotel who find it the norm to drink and smoke weed within the hotels main entrance late at night and then become offensive to paying guest.

Unfortunately we was not able to get a refund from the hotel at the time of leaving, we spent a total of three nights at this shambolic dirty rotten hotel, if you can call it that ! We left the hotel after I had complained many times only to be given a email address to forward my complaints to, if you would like to stay in a complete and utter doss-hole with know management present please go ahead , this place is an utter DUMP !

I stayed at the Trecarn on a mid week coach holiday break. However after reading the bad reviews posted on Trip Adviser, I was anxious about staying at the hotel. I was totally surprised when I arrived. The hotel public areas were spotless. My room was clean and tidy, fresh towels and unmarked bed linen. I did request some cleaning disinfectant, as small mark on shower and I was asked if I wanted it cleaned. I said 'No, That is okay, I can use the disinfectant during my stay.' As there is no housekeepers to clean the rooms, while guests are staying, due to the Covid 19 guidelines. After departure they are cleaned and sanitized all ready for the next guests.
The hotel staff on reception were very helpful with my enquires with a professional manner. Restaurant Staff were also very helpful and courteous. All staff I saw had face coverings on. On my table, there was cutlery wrapped in plastic, at every meal, ready to open and use. Food was nice. Three courses on Evening meal ( Or tea if you are from the North!) Various flavours of Soup, followed by a choice for your main course: Chicken Curry or Battered Cod, Pollock or Mince pie etc. Pudding was mainly a selection of cheese cakes with the option of cream on it! No custard? Still it was the late Kenny Everett who said " The custard stops at Hatfield".
At breakfast, you could have cereal and toast or cooked breakfast with toast. Again Staff very helpful and service was very good. Afterward the staff would clear your plates and cutlery and sanitize the table down.
The hotel has sanitizing stations dotted all over in the corridors and public areas, and signage promoting social distancing. Yes there are areas for development, but due to the lockdown, earlier in the year, it looks like it has hampered refurnishing work. There was no evening entertainment, just background music and staff would serve you at your table. To be honest this hotel has been slated on Trip Adviser. My advice is: If you want the standards of the Ritz, Go and stay at the Ritz! Overall I enjoyed my stay here at the Trecarn. Yes parts of the hotel are looking tired, but it is clean tidy and welcoming, in the best possible taste!

We booked to stay at the Trecarn hotel in Torquay on Sunday 16th August 2020 checking out on Monday 17th August 2020. Staying one night moving onto to our airbnb

The booking was made on Friday 07/08/2020 directly through the hotel's website. I paid for a double executive room with bed and breakfast travelling with my wife and two children.

We planned to visit Paignton Zoo on the day of our arrival and then travel to the hotel which was just 20 minutes away.

Whilst travelling 3 hours from our home in Birmingham we received an email from the hotel reception which stated we noticed you have booked with two children what are the ages I thought this was a little strange as all the information was provided at the time of booking, I emailed back with the necessary information.

On arrival at the hotel after paying the receptionist decided to inform us that the hotel is fully booked and we would be relocated to a flat round the back of the hotel I asked why and there wasn’t really any explanation he mentioned something about but we had booked directly through the hotel.

We had to load up the car again and then drive round to this location we arrived to find that we had been placed in a downgraded unclean flat. We are also informed that there was no wifi and with two small children this was not good.

I made my views clear to the receptionist that I was not happy with this arrangement and that I would like to speak with the manager he stated that the manager will be there in the morning he also informed us that we had to walk or drive back round in the morning to get breakfast. This left us in desperate situation with no alternative.

After an uncomfortable night we walked around in the morning to the main reception I spoke with staff who again informed me that the manager was not available.

I was in in a long line of people who surprisingly complained about they're stay for various reasons.

I have attached images of the condition we found our accommodation its was dirty with a damp smell the windows could not be locked leaving us vulnerable.

This was truly disappointing having travelled 3 hours and after the end of a great day at the zoo we just wanted to relax in comfort.

I have sent 3 emails and have had no response whatsoever that is how they handle complaints. Very bad customer service and how they handle customer complaints they just ignore them. i have emailed the address provided to me by the receptionist the hotel appears to be managed by the britannia group.

Just returned from a 4 day new yr break by coach from Doncaster with our sister/brother in law ,to start with on arrival we got dropped in the car park at the back of the hotel then had to find our way to reception through a maze of very dated coridoors and doors, rest room and dinning room. !!!,after collecting our keys we had to go back through dinning room rest room coridoors through doors and up3 sets of stairs noisey squeaky and in poor condition (no lift on our side of hotel or at least we never saw one )with two 25kg bags/cases , into the room we went ,well very basic and dated , but very clean , bathroom in need of a make over. All meals very nice ,NO water on dinning tables tho , the little chef was rather ignorant on a couple of occasions , waiteresses very nice and talkative , evening entertainment excelant, bar staff amazing ,
All in all not too bad !!! but my ONLY moan NOT to return would be until proof of re furbs therefore 4stars

We were booking in for Friday and Saturday night as we were visiting family. The Trecarn Hotel seemed very reasonable and as they were part of a chain and showing 3 stars we thought it would be a safe bet - we were only wanting somewhere to sleep and weren't planning on being there during the day. We arrived late Friday and were given our room keys and proceeding up the stairs and into the corridor. There was a strange damp - not hygienic cleaning type smell everywhere. Upon entering the room we saw the large window wide open and the curtains had fallen off and were laid on the chair. We went back downstairs and told them that we were not willing to accept the room. They eventually found us a replacement room and went and checked it before we were given the keys. Yes, the curtains were on the track and the bed/bedding was clean with fresh towels on the bed. There was however a very damp smell in the room coming from the bathroom and the extractor didn't work. There was also a towel that looked distinctly like it had been used and left behind by the previous occupant. The sliding door to the bathroom was also very stiff and either got stuck part way or wouldn't open at all! The curtains were disgusting with large mildew marks on the bottom 6 inches of the curtains. Areas had been patched and painted over (very poorly) and the towel rail was botched on with a load of filler and painted over the top.
We also had problems with the room next door. Now I know that that isn't the hotels fault but they came in a 4am and were shouting and sounding like they were kicking the door in for about half an hour. We were too scared to leave the room as we weren't sure if someone was out in the corridor kicking the wall or door and with there being no 'phone in the room we couldn't even contact reception. Britannia Hotels also have this ridiculous 'phone system whereby it costs a fortune to call their central system.
I'm afraid that a 3 star rating is a bit beyond imagination...... I would definitely avoid this place like the plague!
