If you could condense the spirit of a town into one building, Artist Residence Brighton would be it. Creative, bohemian and downright eccentric, this unique boutique hotel at the head of Regency Square was reborn when we sent out an ad offering artists free board in return for their services. As a result, each of the 24 rooms is a blend of quirky original artwork and local character, with eye-popping sea views over Brighton seafront and the iconic West Pier. Downstairs, the Clubhouse is a lively all-day neighbourhood hub, with light and airy spaces for a laid-back brunch, settling in with your laptop and a coffee, or enjoying cocktails.

My partner & I stayed in Artist Hotel Brighton for one night in late June 2021, costing £154 in total. We stayed on the top (4th) floor in room 27 (we booked a small double bed).

The staff were really welcoming and helpful whenever we needed their assistance (e.g. needed an iron, ordered drinks from the bar). There is a lift if that's a requirement for anyone that can't take the stairs.

The room itself was small but tidy and clean, had it's own capsule coffee machine, fridge (some free bottled water), small desk fan, small flat screen tv & private bathroom. It's an old enough building, but the decor in the room & common areas is pretty (and kept clean). The shower in the bathroom was great too (2 settings: rainfall or standard nozzle) with good water pressure & instant warm water).

The hotel is well located in Regency Square, facing out from the front of the hotel you can see the i360 Brighton experience. It's pretty much a 1 min walk to the beachfront and less than a 10 minute walk from the lanes/North Laines district.

If we're being picky, the only slight negative points I'd note are:

- Price: I think for the price we paid it falls just slightly above the mark on the "value for money" scale, but it's not outrageous either.

- Heat in room overnight: it was that it was fairly warm in the room even during the night time. To compensate we had the small desk fan turned on throughout the night, and both small windows open as far as they could open). Note: We didn't raise it with the staff as we were only staying there the one night and it seemed a minor thing to cause hassle over given we were only there for the one night, but if we'd been staying longer I'd probably have mentioned it to them. Not sure if it's just a weird quirk of the room we were in but it wasn't particularly warm that night we stayed (about 16/17 degrees C by midnight) but I read other reviews that mentioned this. The radiator in our room wasn't turned on, so putting it down to a combination of the specific room being small & also capturing heat from the 3 floors below it. I feel if we were staying longer, and if I'd raised this with the staff I'm sure they would have helped us out without a fuss regardless.

Had a great mini break at the Artist Residence. The location is excellent, only a 10 minute walk to Churchill Square and 15 minute walk to the main pier. Parking is also very handy, as it is just across from the hotel. All the staff we encountered during our stay were so friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is wonderfully decorated and very quirky - i'd recommend visiting the bar if you want a relaxing drink in the evening. The room was on the small side, however had all the necessities and a lovely sea view. The only negatives 1. There were no hangers/wardrobe in our room, so unfortunately meant some creased clothes during our stay. However, when we asked for an iron, this was provided immediately from the staff. 2. Our room was situated right above the front door. As it was a windy few days, the main doors to the hotel were slamming very hard each time a guest entered and it was very loud in our room. If you are a light sleeper/sensitive to loud noises, I would recommend not staying in the room we did. Apart from that, we really enjoyed our stay here and would 100% return!

Quirky with lovely staff and great attention to detail. Fab view straight out to windswept seafront provided a cosy retreat to watch the waves and enjoy a little break.
Great meal in The Set and , unexpectedly for a Monday night in Feb, a real buzzy atmosphere. Lovely cocktail bar for pre and post dinner drinks.
Room very well equipped with large , stocked fridge and tasty snacks ( chargeable) and
complimentary water/tea/coffee(Nespresso) and biscuits.
One minor detail to make it perfect - no mirrors near plug sockets so difficult to dry hair and lighting in bathroom a bit dim to apply make up. I am being picky here!
All in all , a great stay and would definitely return. Looking forward to trying the others in the group.

As mentioned in some of the other reviews the building is old and whilst I appreciate that this is part of the charm it also comes with it's downsides.

It is not set up as a hotel with air con and soundproofing something I should have checked and taken into consideration. The floorboards are very creaky and old and rooms facing the sea are in a few noisy part of Brighton. In summer with no air con you need the window open but it can be very noisy. I was unfortunate that I had someone up all night above me and could hear everything all night. I wasn't given any info on how to contact the hotel out of hours in an emergency and there are no phones in the room, probably due to covid.

Upon arrival we were given the opportunity to leave our bags in the communal area whilst we went out for the day which I was unsure of as my work laptop was in the bag. I had emailed in advance to check this was ok as was reassured we could leave our bags securely. I was then told one of the rooms was ready so the bags but be securely locked in there which saved me carrying it around only to return and find the room had been unlocked the whole time and the lock didn't work. I was advised a handyman would come whilst at dinner and to bring down any valuables to be locked in the office. When I returned ready for bed he still hadn't been so I asked to move rooms after being offered a free drink in the bar whilst I wait.

The new room was a lovely upgrade but unfortunately I had someone above me up all night and I realized how creaky the floorboards were and how there was no soundproofing. I also wasn't provided with a fan and no details of who to contact out of hours.

I can see the appeal of the hotel but I wouldn't recommend staying in a sea facing room in summer with no air con and the noise with the window open. Also if you are a light sleeper be aware of the floorboards and noise . As another view also mentions the beds are too soft.

I also think that the small rooms are more suitable for one person and would be very cramped with two people. The bathroom is very compact and small so for a tall person its not great. if there are two of you i would book one of the bigger rooms.

We stayed here for the first weekend they were open post lockdown. The staff were super friendly and excited to be back. Their health and safety routines were all down pat. Lots of hand sanitizer was readily available and they had table service with distanced tables. The breakfasts were great and the cocktails were divine. It was exactly what we needed to get away from the four walls of our own home. Thank you.

I visited the Artist Residence hotel in Brighton with my best friend as part of a 3 day get away in June.
We took the train from Cambridge and followed a map to the hotel when we arrived. It took about 15-20 minutes and was easy to get there!
The staff were really friendly and we were able to leave our stuff there until it was time to check in to our room at 3pm.
The location couldn’t be any better! 2 minutes from the sea front and about 10-15 minute walk from the town centre. For us this was perfect.
We booked a cozy double which was the cheapest room however to our pleasant surprise we had a sea view and a balcony. This caused a bit of confusion as the balcony looked as thought it was out of bounds. Unfortunately there was a lot of droppings on the chairs and tables which had not been cleaned before our arrival, as well as no toilet paper.
After going to speak to the receptionist she told us we had been upgraded (free of charge) and the balcony was for us to use, she always sorted the toilet paper situation straight away.
The room itself was absolutely stunning, and probably even better than we had imagined. The decor was lovely, the bed was really comfortable I did not want to leave it, and there were some lovely touches such as bath products, tea bags, coffee, slippers, bottled water and even Tunnock’s caramel wavers. It was all very warming and luxurious.
We loved coming back to shower after a day at the beach as well as sitting on the balcony despite the bird droppings.
In terms of our night sleep, the first night we realised the walls were rather thin and we could hear our neighbours walking around as well as people in the flats next door talking on their balcony. However the night after that was fine! A couple other improvements I would say is that we had a tiny corridor outside our room which, was so dark we could not unlock our door without a phone torch. There may have been a light but we could not find one. Another thing is that there are two mirrors, a full length mirror behind the door and one in the bathroom. When it came to getting ready I can’t say the lighting was the best.
However these are minor things, and overall I couldn’t recommend this hotel more if your staying in Brighton. Of course it’s not the cheapest but if you would like a wonderful boutique experience, this is for you:)

Having properties of my own to let out some think that I criticise when I stay away - this however couldn't be further from the truth. When staying away I like to be able to enjoy my free time. This hotel is a great base for visiting Brighton. Easy walking distance to most of the cities amenities. But I appreciated how flat Suffolk is once I returned home after 3 days walking around Brighton. Parking is a paid carpark opposite the hotel at £18 for 24 hours. This is cheap in comparison to some other car parks in the city.
Back to the hotel... I had a "Cosy Double" room (room 14) on the 4th floor. It was cosy but I have stayed in smaller. Everything in the room has been well thought out. It's the little extra touches that make a stay a good one for me - and there are plenty of them. The items on offer in the mini bar, snack box, bathroom are all top end products. The rooms is well decorated. The bed for me personally was a little hard leaving me with a stiff back in the morning but we are all different and this could be perfect for someone else. The bathroom was very small but contained everything you would need.
The staff were young, hip, trendy exactly what you would expect in this kind of hotel in this city!! Very friendly and helpful. I didn't have dinner in The Set restaurant, only breakfast. The staff again very helpful and friendly. The food was excellent and locally sourced.
Without a shadow of a doubt would I stay here again when visiting the city. I will certainly be visiting their other hotels in the country on future getaways also.

Hi spamdodger, Wow! What an incredible review! Thank you so much for taking the time to write such lovely things about the hotel - as you can imagine, we are absolutely delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay so much with us. We are indeed fortunate enough to be so centrally located, and you're not wrong about Brighton's demanding terrain! We are of course sorry to hear that the bed was a little too hard for your tastes (next time you come to stay, give us a call when you book and we can advise you accordingly which room will best suit your needs); we're really chuffed you enjoyed the little extras in the room - we agree that it's the smaller details that can really make or break a stay, and in this case they were received exactly in the spirit in which they're intended :) We particularly appreciate your lovely comments regarding the team here (which we will of course pass on) - we're so pleased that you felt so well looked after, and are very flattered that we're deemed to be so youthful and stylish! :D It was our pleasure to have you stay with us, and very much look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel next time you're in Brighton. Kindest regards, Kate & The ARB Team

This hotel is in a great location and we even had a sea view. We were given a complementary breakfast and it was amazing. Probably the best cooked breakfast we've had at any hotel. The staff were friendly. Nespresso machines are provided in the rooms which is excellent.

Those are the positives.

The decor was probably at one time shabby chic but now it's just shabby. Definitely very tired and scruffy. We booked the small room on the top floor so we were expecting a small room. This was tiny however, barely possible to walk around the bed. No wardrobe. Nowhere to put suitcases. Way too expensive for such a tiny room.

The en-suite was not clean, the basin didn't drain properly and the shower was stone cold on one of the mornings. Worse though is that the door to the en-suite was actually two shutter doors that didn't shut properly and you could see through them. Not exactly private, especially when the bed is so close to the wc.

The window was an old sash window which let cold air in as well as water when it rained. It was covered in flaky paint and the glass was filthy.

There was only one set of towels even though our booking was for 2 people and I had to ask repeatedly for an extra set to be provided. They did appear eventually.

We've given a (generous) average rating for the hotel because we are sure that other rooms in the hotel are much better, the breakfast was amazing, the location is great, and the staff were friendly. Just don't book the small rooms unless you're travelling on your own.

We had a fab weekend in the big room for 6. The team couldn't have made us more welcome. It was gorgeously cosy and comfortable for our party of 5 plus dog. We were able to reserve an area around the Christmas tree for a family gathering and space in the bar for drinks on the Saturday night, hands down the most delicious margarita I've had. We used the parking service around the back in Regency Mews which was ideal and much cheaper than the car park in the square. Location wise, it's perfectly central, we had fantastic pizza @Nanninella a minute away and could pop to Waitrose for any extras for the room. The only comment would be - to fix the 'aroma' downstairs in the passageway which thankfully you couldn't smell when you were in the room. Other than that I'd happily stay again anytime! Thank you for making us so welcome x

We had the most wonderful stay here - in the bunk room for four people in the basement. Very comfortable room with bunk beds reminiscent of an old sleeper train, with each bunk having its own curtain. Well kitted out shower room with gorgeous toiletries. There were also robes and slippers provided, and tea & coffee making facilities.
The staff were great, very friendly and approachable. The breakfast, not included in the price, was superb with a good variety of dishes available. All freshly made to order.
The location is perfect - a few minutes walk from the beach and a few minutes from the centre of the city and all its amenities.

hi Hilary, even the large rooms are fairly cosy because the hotel is a tall building but not vast. As such, I don't think there are rooms for 3 adults. You might want to call the hotel nevertheless. Best wishes, Alexandra
