Having stayed in close proximity to both the Old and New Dungeon Ghyll Hotels, we had to feel a bit of sympathy for the Old DG. The other hotel has the advantage of Sticklebarn, the NT car park and is close to footpaths straight out to the major fells. Old Dungeon Ghyll is not so lucky and, sadly, is somewhat...

Have just enjoyed a short stay at The Old Dungeon Ghyll. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and make you feel very welcome. The room was clean and comfortable with an immaculate en-suite. The adjoining Walkers' Bar was busy with a good atmosphere. Good setting off point to walk Scafell Pike and close to Windermere where there's a...

I have fond memories of this place, eaten in the Hikers' Bar and stayed in the hotel itself on many occasions over the last 30 years. What a disappointment. The 'no frills' atmosphere has been replaced by sheer neglect. New table tops in half the bar, yes, but the whole place smelled of urine from the toilets, which were just...

Loved everything about this old fashioned, historic pub. After seeing it on Hairy Bikers I was thrilled to see the old beams and loved the atmosphere- especially the friendly bar staff! Couldn't resist ordering some of their homemade desserts (UNREAL sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie) and they were delicious. The main meals of surrounding folk also looked fantastic. Nothing...

Had a bite to eat with the family. Unfortunately the very popular veg lasagna was off the menu, though, to be fair we did arrive quite late in the evening. Food and service was good, and there were plenty of outside tables.

I know how good this place can be from previous visits, but unfortunately on Saturday after getting down from the hill at 8.30 and looking forward to a good pub meal, we were told the kitchen had closed early and they couldn't take our orders at 8.45. We sat out side with a drink and watched food being brought out...

This was our second stay and we felt every bit as positive about the place as the first time. It is our idea of a country house hotel for walkers. The old building has large public rooms and bedrooms and a restaurant for proper dining if required. We opted for the Hikers Bar instead because we like the atmosphere. Breakfast...

We stayed for 2 nights for a wedding in room 12. The room was clean with lots of tea and coffee making facilities. The en-suite had lots of toiletries, however the shower was a little challenging. It was great if you wanted a hot shower but not so good for a cooler one and as it was a hot and...

Had drinks at the Hiker's Bar on several occasions, as it was only walking distance from the NT campsite and we enjoyed the atmosphere amongst fellow campers/hikers. Had dinner one night when it was too rainy to cook at the camp and we enjoyed our food. The fish and chips were HUGE and very nice. Would definitely come back here.

We ate here twice during our weekend away as we were camping at the nearest campsite and didn't fancy cooking. The food is delicious and freshly cooked on sight ... The fish and chips were lovely, fresh flakey fish with a light crisp batter, twice cooked chips, mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce, also the burger was very tasty too...
