A great quirky hostel that was once a mill by the banks of the River Cocker. The hostel was a labour of love for the warden who had put his soul into welcoming people. Dorms on the top floor - second level. Self catering and common room on the middle level and Toilets on the bottom level. This hostel is...

Myself and 3 friends stayed in the YHA Cockermoth on a coast to coast ride, and I must say what a stunning location, the rooms were very clean and tidy the lady looking after the hostel was a credit to the Yha organisation i can't remember her name but a big thank you to her for making us so welcome...

Good morning Stephen, Thank you for your review, all feedback is appreciated, as it helps others decide which place best suits them. I know we are closing down in the next week or so, .. so, for the guidance of other people thinking of coming, I'd like to pick up on your opening words .. 'Nice quiet place' to describe...

Why does the YHA ask for a review for a hostel it has already decided to close down? It is a lovely hostel in a former mill by the river. Access is down a steep path that is badly in need of repair. Signage could be improved. Once there you cannot wish for a cosier place to rest your tied...

Good evening Tiana, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.. and your kind words. I'm glad you were able to make use of our / (my) rather cute little hostel in it's final few weeks. You ask why do we still want reviews, knowing it is closing soon? Well, we are still open 'till the end...

After a day in the lakes my friend and i arrived at the YHA and were greeted by Ray who gave us the "low down" and the house rules. Very simple he locks up at 23.00 and you can bring your own drink in but they do not like drunks. Also you have to be out by 10.00 in the...

Ah, hello David Thanks for taking the time to do this review, and many thanks for the kind words, all of which I think are reasonable comments. I thank you for bringing to the fore the point that being the only hostel in the area without a drinks licence, guests are very welcome to BYO, but we don't accept disruptive...

Excellent YHA, brought back happy memories on when I first joined. The manager was very helpful in giving directions to the town, and recommending places to eat and drink. Very hospitable and such a shame it is closing.

We were given a warm greeting after arriving at the hostel, and had a relaxing and happy stay after cycling through cumbria as part of a cycle tour. The hostel is simple, cosy and has everything youd need including an effective drying room. Ray the manager helped fixed my bike and was an amusing and supportive presence, especially through his...

Good morning.. glad you liked the place, and thanks for the review, And thank you for mentioning all the nice things that this place has to offer, and appreciating the work from the volunteers. I'm afraid this is, as you put it a 'dying breed', so I'm pleased you found us, and we had you staying. Yes, these small, 'traditional'...

I'll start with a positive, £10pp is great. However, on arrival we were told we had to be in before 11pm, which isn't great as we'd been cycling until late on a 147mile charity c2c and still needed to eat. Despite this, there was no room for negotiating with rude staff - who bluntly explained 'if you wanted to come...

Two dorms, one female, one male, clean and comfortable, dorms are on the top floor, middle floor is the office, common/dining room and kitchen. Ground floor is wet room, showers and toilets. Once you've signed in you can get access to dorms and ground floor during the day but the middle floor is locked. Outside is a small car park,...

Just home from a seven night stay in this gem of a hostel on the north west edge of the Lake District. Loved every minute of it. A handy base for cycling and touring the west Cumbrian coast and great walking in the quieter northwestern lakeland fells, this hostel is a converted 17th century watermill in an idyllic spot on the river Cocker.
