Exquisite Lake District Escape. Close to Bassenthwaite Lake & three easy miles from Cockermouth. Peace and Isolation assured. 3* accommodation spotlessly maintained throughout. Fabulous home cooked food. Essentially a Residential College running Workshops & Course opportunities for Adult Learners, there are often spare rooms available as B&B. The Gardens are magnificently maintained and all the staff are VERY approachable and...

A visit to Higham is a total treat. The staff are fabulous, the home cooked food is great and the courses are many and varied. The location of Higham is just stunning. Whether you attend a course or just base yourself there and visit the local area expect to feel determined to return.

I have been going to Higham hall for over 10 years and try to go about 4 times a year. Marvellous place, there is an excellent variety of courses and the tutors are very good. The food is very good, full English, buffet lunch and three course dinner. If you manage, coffee and biscuits am and the and cake pm,...

I took a short painting course over the August bank holiday, and stayed an extra night on both sides of it because of the distance travelled to get there. Higham Hall is beautiful and, although not to luxury hotel standard, is perfectly comfortable and clean: and extremely good value! My room overlooked the inner courtyard and, on the Thursday evening...

Glad you found Higham! You were lucky having Chamber Music to serenade you. Thank you for noticing the things we try to be - you are absolutely correct that we want no one to feel on their own here. United by a common interest, people can feel part of the place no matter what their situation might be. It is...

This is the second year and the third course I have attended at Higham Hall. Higham Hall is an Educational Trust that I came across wanting to combine visiting relatives with some art education. This has fitted the bill in the most excellent way. From the genuine welcome of the Principal George Cooke to the staff at all levels make...

Thanks Margaret for your response. You encapsulate the feel we are trying to create perfectly. Glad you are planning to return! I don't feel we'll ever get to be a 5 star hotel standard, not with all the things that go wrong with this old historic building, but we do try to give the 5 star welcome! Having said that,...

I returned yesterday from a 3 day paper making course at this super venue. I had an immaculate room, overlooking the garden...which was busy with wild life. The house is beautifully kept, the catering provision for vegetarians is very good..and the staff are keen to ensure that guests have an enjoyable stay. The course itself was great fun, as were...

This was my first visit to Higham Hall where I found good company, a beautiful historic building and lovely food. It's not a hotel but you receive a homely welcome, a nice bedroom access to the Internet (although not brilliant coverage) full board and when the dinner gong goes more food awaits! The surroundings are superb; great views and nice...

I took two back to back courses so was at Higham for 7 days and did not want to leave! I learnt so much on the courses as tutors were excellent but on top of that, the food was excellent, my room quiet and comfortable and the staff always helpful and friendly. Nearly everyone on the courses were on their...

Thank you for your review. The fact that people can come on their own to Higham and not feel on their own is an important aspect of why we do what we do. Thank you for mentioning it. Even though we are present on Trip Advisor as a B&B, everybody knows that is not the whole story and that it...

Thank you very much for your review. It sums up Higham Hall very well. We try to look after people who come, and to help them feel it is a home from home. It is fantastic to see that the things we try to provide are noticed. We aren't hi-tech or ultra-modern, we like to think ourselves as upholding the...

We are a self-supporting adult residential college, run as a charitable educational trust, running both day and residential courses for adults of all ages across the arts, humanities and sciences.
