We have just returned from a week in Horseshoe Cottage, a self- catering cottage in the hotel grounds, converted from the old stables. The cottage is lovely, very clean and comfortable. It has kept all of its old charm and atmosphere but is very modern and exceptionally cosy, even on nights when the rain was falling and the winds howling. It is very well equipped, every last detail has been thought of and all you could need is there. Heaves Hotel is a very quaint old building, high ceilings and beautiful old fireplaces, deep soft sofas and tapestries on the walls. We found it ideal as we had all the privacy and space of the cottage, but we could also go to the hotel, which is a stones throw away, through an old gothic archway. We had a couple of lovely cooked breakfasts there which set us up for a day at one of the lakes, and a delicious evening meal served in a beautiful old room full of interesting old pottery and books. You can also order takeaway fish and chips and a few other dishes from the hotel to take back to the cottage and these were very good. We have very happy memories of our week in Horseshoe Cottage and would definately like to return again, either in the spring/summer for another stay in the cottage when we could see more of the lovely grounds or maybe a few days in the hotel itself. Totally unique charming old place. The family are lovely too, very helpful and attentive.

We stayed in Groom's cottage - a one bedroom self-catering apartment in the grounds of Heaves Hotel. The hotel is an old country house dating from the early 1800's and is set in attractive grounds. What is probably the old stable block has been converted into a number of self-catering apartments. Groom's cottage has a living/dining room and kitchen on the ground floor and a good sized double bedroom and bathroom on the first floor.
Heave's Hotel is in an convenient location for exploring the Southern Lakes - just 4 miles south-west of Kendal, it is easy to get to being only a few minutes drive off the M6 and just off one of the main A roads that takes you towards Windermere and the other lakes. It is virtually next door to Sizergh Castle, a National Trust property.
The staff were always very helpful and pleasant in meeting any needs.

I stopped here for 2 nights, 3 days at the same time as raymartin and martinmac. I stayed in a single room which was huge and clean. I went with a group of friends, not to watch the tv or look out the bedroom window. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I found the staff very helpful and polite but presumably all family members rather than professional hotel staff. An evening meal in their dining room with friends was filling and reasonably priced. At breakfast there was a varied choice of cereals, fruit juices tea, coffee and unlimited toast and jams. I was met by the proprietor and allowed to sit where I liked, was asked what I wanted to eat and offered tea or coffee. There wasn’t a waiter hovering at my elbow but I didn’t expect there to be. During the day food was available on request and the bar was open. I paid £45 per night and was very happy with that. I think the staff went out of their way to accommodate such a large group, many of us camping or staying elsewhere. Not posh. Yes it is in need of repair/maintenance but food ok and bed clean. Prices very reasonable, what more do you want when staying in the lakes?

We came as part of a group of about 20 people who have our ‘Christmas Party’ here every February, we all love this place and come year on year. This is our fourth visit here and I’m glad to say, nothing has changed. It still has the same quaint, quirky, idiosyncratic charm that makes this hotel so different, so special, and a place we all look forward to visiting.
I have reviewed this hotel before and there is little else to add, other than to say that we enjoyed an excellent meal there that evening, and we are all looking forward to visiting again next year.

If you are looking for a weekend get-together with extended family, old classmates or club members, Heaves Hotel is perfect. Don't be put off by the "Country House" hotel bit; this is a very friendly and relaxed place. Good food, reasonable rates, a bar, drawing room, marvellous walks, easy access from M6, fine setting, even a piano in the lobby if you've taken over the entire place and fancy a singalong. And above all, really friendly and flexible hosts.

Yesterday a group of us had a lovely time at the Heaves Hotel. We assembled around midday and had a leisurely drink before lunch at 1.00pm. Food good (of a down-to-earth sort) and our coeliac friend was very well catered for. The ladies who waited on us were friendly and chatty and offered second helpings of vegetables etc. A lovely experience - what a pity for the owners that there were no other diners!

We have just spent 3 nights celebrating New Year at The Heaves. For us, it was ideal. We have been to The Heaves many times over the years but this was our first New Year. It was exactly what we wanted - fantastic accommodation, amazing food and wonderful hosts. We didn't want loud music and discos we wanted lovely food and a quiet but enjoyable atmosphere. We were in our room by 10; finding out tonight that the party of people at least 20 years older than us stayed up until 2.30am!!! Before we leave tomorrow, we are confirming our reservation for next year. A fantastic experience I would recommend to anyone.

+1
What a wonderful cottage, comfortable, clean and quaint. The cottage was the best equipped self catering accommodation i have ever stayed in. lovely spacious rooms, with beautiful views. This cottage has a lovely private cottage style garden, with patio area and barbecue. Gtooms cottage had a real feel of privacy, whilst there is another cottage next to Grooms cottage at no time did we feel anything other than peace and quiet. The cottage is situated in the grounds of and owned by Heaves Hotel, We used the bar on several occasions and had a delicious breakfast on our last day, all in a beautiful old Manor house with lovely grounds. To some the Hotel may feel a bit dated, but to us it was charming, clean and full of the spirit of an old manor house. What Shone above everything for us with this holiday was the attentiveness of the Hotels owners, to ensure our stay was a good one. They were friendly and hospitable while not being intrusive. We will definitely return :)

If you are a demanding hotel guest, with expectations of impeccable service and sleek efficiency, for the love of god DO NOT STAY HERE. If however you fancy a stay in a very English, very rambling B&B, then do give this a go. It is like something out of a movie or perhaps even a sitcom - there's something surreal about this place.
It is hugely informal - we spent an afternoon on the squashy sofas in the TV room playing on their ancient set of Trivial Pursuit, being served tea at £3/tray - and the family team here are amiable and easy-going. It's beautifully situated in grounds and is conveniently close to the M6.
Rooms and bathrooms are enormous; amusingly ours included a TV with two armchairs positioned around it.
You could say that it's all in need of updating, or just appreciate the masses of 'period detail' with plenty of fixtures and fittings that date back to the 60s. Crucially, mattress quality was good, the plumbing worked and rooms were clean.
I can't imagine I'll be in the area again any time soon, but would definitely recommend this place to people looking for something a bit different. If you are going to Cartmel / L'Enclume, minicabs are a bit expensive: £25-40 each way.

"We would definately recommend Horseshoe Cottage to families and couples. We have two sons of 12 and 15, and they were captivated by the old archway to the cottage and the woods leading up to it. Also they loved their room at the top of the cottage with its skylight and sloping ceilings."Read full review
