The Municipal Hotel Liverpool - MGallery is lauded for its elegant atmosphere and cleanliness, with travelers often praising the spotless rooms and luxurious decor. Despite some reports of slow service and disorganization, particularly at the bar and during breakfast, the staff is commended for their professionalism. The hotel's prime location is a highlight for guests, though opinions on room size and amenities are mixed. While the ambiance and proximity to attractions are appreciated, many guests feel the hotel falls short on value, citing high costs and extra charges for spa access.

Stunning building & interiors
Modern room & bathroom
Nice touch with dressing gown and slippers
Concierge kindly took our luggage to our rooms whilst we dined in the palm court

Unfortunately the service in the palm court was poor. We were seated and given one menu for 4 of us, had to go up to the bar to ask to order and when we did order it took over 20 minutes just to receive drinks. There was clearly an error made somewhere as 2 minutes after we got our drinks a waitress came over with the same order again. It wasn’t complex at all simply a bottle of Prosecco and a corona and at no point did anyone apologise, the staff were not friendly whatsoever certainly not 5 star to say we spent £170 it was disappointing. Having said that the interior was stunning and worth at least one drink to enjoy the hotel

The only other issue we experienced was no shower gel in any of our 3 double rooms - tiny issue hardly worth mentioning however when checking out I was asked if everything was okay so thought I’d give them a heads up to rectify it for the next guests. The lady was quite blunt in snapping back at me “did you not ring reception to let us know” which I explained we honestly didn’t have time and it wasn’t the end of the world.

In a nutshell we really liked the hotel I just don’t think it meets 5 star service expectations which can hopefully be improved

I carefully selected this hotel for my husband's birthday. We go at least once a year to Liverpool. As Accor customers we usually stay at the Novotel however fancied a change. We stayed 2 nights. The hotel has been beautifully restored retaining many original features. I understand it used to be the Liverpool county council building. The hotel is ideally located a few minutes walk from the main areas such as Matthew Street l, Bold Street etc. Welcome and check in was great staff are pleasant and professional. Our room was as described on the Website with beautiful high ceilings and very quiet. The bathroom was lovely with robes included. There was a mini fridge and safe in the room. The standard room is on the small side with only 1 chair next to a desk. The alcove in the window could have housed a small table and chairs which would have been a better use of space. The bar and residents area is stunning very tastefully decorated with art deco vibes. I was already aware the pool and spa incurred an extra charge. My understanding is 2 hour slots are £30 pp off peak or £50 during peak times. Its unclear what prices are for mon residents I assume these would be higher? This strategy needs reviewed residents in my view should have access without additional cost. Or part of the day segmented for residents. Unfortunately the breakfast on each morning was wholly inadequate. Breakfast was extremely limited with items regularly running out and not being replaced. This included the continental offering. The structure and set up of the breakfast area is all wrong people walking past others eating in a restricted space and the toaster has been placed slap bang in the middle. This means everyone congregated in the middle hovering over other diners. The staff at breakfast need support or additional training and management need to focus on this. I witnessed who appeared to be a senior manager moving ropes from one part of the hotel to another rather than actually assisting with the shambles at breakfast. I was given a refund of £24 apparently when I was asked on checkout if my stay was ok. I appreciated this but would have preferred a decent breakfast. As the hotel has only been opened since March I would hope the breakfast issues would be resolved. Another minor point I added that it was my husband's birthday when booking however this was not acknowledged.

Dear normajean100, Thank you for your comprehensive and thoughtful review following your recent stay. Although I was delighted to read how you appreciated the warm and professional service extended by our Front Office team, as well as the interior design and décor throughout the hotel. Our Spa is a sanctuary for all our guests, we offer an exclusive, personable service and therefore we want to maintain the high levels of service and ultimate relaxation for our guests, We offer a discounted rate to our residents of £50 per person for all day access to our Spa and whilst I appreciate your feedback we remain competitive in Liverpool. I was most concerned to know that your breakfast experience was not the perfect one that you were right to expect it to be and Nick Harrison, Food and Beverage Director, joins with me in sending you our sincere apologises. We opened the doors to our beautiful hotel in May, whilst we receive exceptional feedback regularly, we occasionally do get it wrong. I do hope that you return to the Municipal one day so we might have the opportunity to rekindle your image of the hotel. Kind Regards, Ella Pearson

The municipal building had been restored sympathetically and with some beauty .We paid £550 for 3 nights B/B through Secret Escapes.
The porters were extremely helpful , the rest of the team although courteous were unskilled and there did not seem to be any guidance or support .
The standard room was an adequate space , no drinking water provided with a tiny bathroom .
The real disappointing element was that until we went to use the pool facilities we were not made aware of the extortionate extra cost of £30pp or £50pp peak time.
The breakfast was adequate but we shared the meat with several blue bottle flies 2 mornings out of 3.
On leaving we were asked if all was ok and responded accordingly but no one really cared . We would not have booked this hotel if we had been made aware of the extra charges, we have never been charged to use the Spa facilities unless we request a treatment

Dear Safari235340692, Thank you for taking the time share your disappointment with me. Needless to say I was most concerned that we failed to extend the high standards of service, attention to detail and professional curtesy expected by our guests. It is undoubtedly our aim to extend warm friendly and above all completely engaging service for each and every guest and I am truly sorry that this was not the case on this occasion. We highlight the chargeable facilities on our website and all third party sites, whilst I note your disappointment - we remain competitive within Liverpool and the North-West. Whilst I am unable to turn back the clock, I hope you will accept my assurance that your experience was not typical and should you ever consider staying with us in the future, I would be grateful if you would contact me directly, so I may ensure we have the opportunity to fully restore your image of The Municipal.

This hotel is vastly overpriced based on what it delivers and doesn’t have the quality to charge the prices that it does. For a start it is advertised as a spa hotel, but you have to pay a substantial price EXTRA to visit the spa, and you have to book in advance or they won’t let you in. We couldn’t get in because it was booked up and we asked just to have a look but they wouldn’t let us see it because there was someone in it! The breakfast has a very limited choic, is not well presented and we found the tureens did not keep the contents hot. On both mornings I had to ask for various items such as plates and glasses and we had no salt on pepper on our table. Attention to detail woeful and not good enough. Tea/coffee is not served to you, which is unacceptable in a very expensive 4 star hotel, there’s a hot water machine in the very small room where you get your cold items from. There are no cartons of flavoured fruit yoghurt and a very limited fruit offering. There are only two types of pastries. We visited the bar before dinner on Saturday evening and it was packed with non-residents, waiting time 20 mins for a drink. You cannot charge anything to your room, a first for me in a prestige hotel. therefore you also have to wait for your bills. I believe that it is quite a new hotel but it is nowhere near worth 300 hundred pounds a night. Based upon our experience no-one in their right mind would go back at that price so they are going to have up their game. On the plus side, the staff were all superb.

On arrival to the hotel, the guy was very pleasant and helpful. He charged us for our room and showed us to the room and offered to carry out bags. We didn’t arrive until really late so did not notice what was wrong with the room.

The next day, we tried to switch on the TV and it had a hole in screen and the picture was shattered and unwatchable. We went down to Reception and they said they would take a look whilst we were out. We asked for the parking ticking and the lady on the desk said we needed to pay for an outstanding room. My partner showed her the invoice to prove we had already paid. We then had to wait around 30 minutes for this to be sorted so we could continue with our plans.

When we were back from our trip, we asked at Reception to see if the TV had been rectified. The lady on the desk told us that we could either stay in the room with no TV as the arial would not connect or we would move rooms. We were moved rooms and were out under pressure to pack as the attendant stood in our room and waited for us to pack. This man was very helpful, chatty and kind but it made the experience very awkward. We were moved rooms to a smaller, less spacious room. The shower gel was empty and there were no teabags/condiments in the box.

We tried to book to use the pool but we were told we had to pay £30 per person on top of our hotel price and if we wanted to use the spa that would be extra also. We were told they could not give us the pool as compensation for our troubles. They offered us 2 free drinks at the bar instead which was limited to draft beverages.

On check out, we were again asked to pay for our whole stay again as the charges were outstanding. The invoice was shown again to prove this.

Overall, this made our stay very stressful and unpleasant. I would not stay at this hotel again.

Dear C134Qlemilyk, Thank you for taking the time to share your comments on TripAdvisor following your most recent stay; I was most concerned to learn of the poor room allocation you experienced, for which please accept my most sincere apologises. Upon arrival we ask all guests for a Pre-authorisation of their card; I do believe this was explained you that we hold the amount in your account and take the full payment upon departure. To add, whilst I note your disappointment with the additional charge for the Spa Access, we are competitive in Liverpool and the North-West. We pride ourselves in having a luxury, tranquil spa setting and therefore allow our guests to experience that at a discounted price. Whilst I am unable to turn back the clock, I hope you will accept my assurance that your experience is not typical and should you ever consider staying with us in the future, I would be grateful if you would contact me directly, so I may ensure we have the opportunity to fully restore your image of The Municipal. Yes the building and bar are stunning, couldn't fault it. First problem on check in was the fact they said we had booked two rooms in spite of the fact that we had the printed confirmation for one room. They insisted we had and were taken up to, presumably, one of the rooms. Almost as soon as we arrived the room phone was ringing with an apology to say it was a reservations mistake ! We settled in, only four coat hangers in the wardrobe and No towel rails in the bathroom so you had the choice of hanging your wet towel on the bathrobe hooks or the damp bathrobe. Nowhere to put the small handtowels apart from on the washbasin. We then went down to have dinner, very small menu, and we were the only two people dining at that point but still waited over half an hour for any food to appear. The next morning the cooked breakfast was fairly average. Later that day we were in the bar area and eventually had to go to the bar to ask for some drinks in spite of several staff standing around chatting. We also decided to have bar food so I ordered mac n lobster cheese to be told they had no lobster. I said I presume that it would be less on the bill then. The waitress went and checked with the chef who evidently said it would cost the same so I chose something different. For breakfast this morning we both chose Eggs Benedict - ham, spinach, poached egg and hollandaise sauce on a muffin. What arrived was ham and egg on a piece of toast with very luminous sauce on top. When I asked about the spinach the waitress said she could ask the chef if we could get some "on the side", I asked to see the menu again to double check but it never appeared. I would qualify the fact that we left one day early primarily because of the weather but as this trip was a gift to me from my husband the whole experience was somewhat disappointing considering what it cost.

I found this hotel experience highly disappointing and definitely not up to Accor standards.
Check in was dreadful with no welcome and the receptionist rudely fixed her gaze on my husband and engaged with him despite the room being booked in my name and I am a silver loyalty member. I had to say something but there was no apology
She then seemed to think it a good idea to accompany us to the room but ended up on the wrong floor looking for it and had to be told we were on the wrong floor. This pretence of service was both absolutely unnecessary and highly irritating (I have been In many hotels in different countries and have never ended up looking for a room on the wrong floor!!)
She didn’t seem to understand Accor systems and because of this check in was laborious and more complicated than it should have been.
As a silver member I should have been welcomed in a way to help me feel like a valued loyal customer (ALL guests should feel valued and I never expect special treatment)
Other Accor hotels eg Sofitel and Pullman always make me feel welcomed and valued, so why could this hotel not do the same
I even find the three star Styles much better.

The bar area is a pleasant enough space bu not as amazing as images suggest. It doesn’t have the expected wow factor.
The service is dire and more time is spent waiting for a drink than enjoying said drink.

The room was ok, clean and reasonably comfortable but the bathroom was very small and not designed for practicality.
Where was the make up mirror?
Where was the rail to hang a towel?
No non slip bathmats made showering dangerous and difficult (I asked several times but eventually told there were none)

The food in the restaurant was mediocre at best and the temperature uncomfortably cold.

Overall this hotel seems to be trading on its design features rather than caring for the guests and providing a level of service that all paying guests should expect.

Dear Ruth272, Thank you for taking the time to share your disappointment with me, both on, TripAdvisor and via our guest satisfaction survey. Needless to say I was most concerned that you felt the receptionist was not welcoming, our reception team generate consistent positive feedback regarding their professional courtesy, As you are a valued Silver Accor member it is per brand to room our guests, this is something I am sure you have experienced in the Sofitel and Pullman, however it is undoubtedly our aim to extend warm friendly and above all completely engaging service for each and every guest and I am truly sorry that the journey to your room did not highlight this. There has been an incredible project team behind the refurbishment of the Municipal Hotel, who have had the responsibility to ensure the results met the needs of the modern day traveller, whilst retaining the heritage and DNA of the hotel, and therefore in all our bedrooms we do provide heated towel rails, and extensive mirrors. As you know, we have reached out personally to you at the hotel on two occasions to discuss this further, however with no avail, and therefore I would welcome you to email me direct at Ella.Pearson@RBHManagement.com. I send you my renewed apologises for the disappointing memories you took away with you and my warmest good wishes, Ella Pearson

Visited the hotel for my girlfriend’s 30th birthday on the 24/06/23.

The hotel is brand new and everything is immaculate and aesthetically pleasing.

On arirval for check in our room wasn’t ready so we had to wait. When we eventually got to the room, there was only sparkling and not still water in the fridge… but it was a nice touch to have a welcome of chocolates and fruits in the room.

Staff seemed new and in need of direction as they semeed stretched with the number of people.

We ordered drinks on an evening and had to ask twice for them to be brought over which took 30 minutes.

Breakfast was disappointing, we waited a long time to be seated and even longer to be brought out tea and coffee as it was table service. Again the staff semeed stretched and did their best.

There was a constant them of waiting, for juices to be filled in the dispensers and hot buffet food replaced. There was an underwhelming selection for a 5* hotel. You’d expect a wider selection savoury options such as pancakes, more pastries etc. Same for the hot buffet, it would be nice to have more options .

The spa was lovely, however it lacks the options for refreshments and I would reccomend to bring your own water as there was no options for drinks.

Overall the hotel is beautiful and staff try their best and are welcoming but in terms of service and options it is not a 5* establishment yet.

Jack

I truly appreciate you taking the time to bring your concerns regarding your breakfast experience to my attention. Whilst I am unable to turn back the clock, I hope you will accept my assurance that your experience is not typical and should you ever consider staying with us in the future, I would be so grateful if you would contact me directly, so I may ensure we have the opportunity to fully restore your image of The Municipal, With all good wishes,

Fairly disappointed by the standard of this hotel, surprisingly after being a fairly new hotel in the city.

First of all is the fact spa facilities come at an extra cost and not cheap too, definitely something to keep in mind especially as there are a lot of spa hotels with facilities included for reasonable pricing and actually better facilities too.

Rooms are tiny, not great if your not good with tight spaces, room was clean and decorated nicely with plenty of character but had the cleaners spray bottles left in the room and the bedding and cushions used wasn’t great atall.

On return from our meal back to the room the key card then wouldn’t let us back into the room so we went to reception for a new card which was done swiftly but wasn’t met with no apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience.

Finally, check out was at 12:00 but at 11:00 I had a cleaner enter the room as I was undressed which didn’t leave me best pleased, again I informed the reception I got a apology on behalf of the cleaner but didn’t feel really satisfied as a paying customer.

To summarise I think it’s a beautiful hotel with a lot of potential but I think their falling short, more so because of the better competition surrounding this hotel, it could go shoulder to shoulder with all of them but interms of value for money they will fall short. The staff are all lovely and kind enough people but I feel abit under satisfied with the customer service, almost like there’s a lack of experience. I didn’t feel very looked after or important as a guest,
More so just a number. Would I come back again? I don’t think I would pay to come again, probably not on the same pricing structure. I’ve been to lovely hotels around the world and do think this could be one of Liverpools best but they need to do a lot of work internally on how it’s ran in my opinion, the structure and facility is grande and amazing the running of it isn’t.
