Yes , leaving they key and the front desk it makes sort of communication between you and the front desk , and if you lose your key outside the hotel will must replace the whole door lock , in order to secure the room again, also according to fire regulation in case of fire , if your room key is hanged on the hotel key board thisbis means that you are out the hotel so fire fighters will go to the room following which is the key not hanged on the key board , also when you receive messages or letters it is kept a long withyiur room key at the key board.
So that is why you should leave the room key.
