Detailed Reviews
Let me preface by saying I've stayed in many Motels, Hotels and in between. I try to get value for my money while staying in logistically beneficial areas with a decent aesthetic. Let's start with the positive. It's in Sussex Gardens close to Hyde Park, Oxford St (for shopping) and if you like Iraqi, Lebanese, Kuwaiti, Indian or any other myriad of Asian food, you'll do well to stay here. It's a quick, less than 10 min walk to Paddington Station. The bloke at the front desk was great checking us in, showing us to room and offering suggestions. That's about it. For $200 a night (US$) I expected a little more room and comfort (maybe I'm naive.) We stayed in #51 in the basement and it was the smallest room/ensuite I've ever stayed in for more than 1 person. You couldn't fully open the bathroom door without it hitting the bed. They neglected to put the bathroom fan on before we got there so you could smell someone had just went #2 and there was a long black hair in the sink. Oh and the lift didn't work so you have to maneuver and carry all your bags through the maze like halls, down through the dining room to your room. If you're a light sleeper you will hear the regular tube travels and people walking around their room above you. It felt pretty safe but I don't think the room was more than 10'x10'. I wouldn't stay again but if you can look over a lot of minor stuff, it may be for you

The Athena Hotel in London’s Paddington neighborhood is a simple, no-frills, relatively affordable hotel. It is a very short walk from London Paddington Station and a slightly longer walk (10min) from the Lancaster Gate Tube station. There are also several bus routes that stop nearby, including the Big Bus Hop On Hop Off tourist bus. This makes it very accessible to many parts of London, including Heathrow Airport. It is also walking distance from Hyde Park and Kensington Palace. The hotel itself is very basic and nothing special. The mattresses are fine and the pillows are a bit thin, but the A/C works very well. The TV is surprisingly large for the size of the room, which can be nice. Our bathroom was fairly good: the shower had good pressure and temperature control, and the sink worked well, but there was mold visible in some of the corners. There does seem to be a Tube line running underneath the hotel to some degree, as every so often, you may hear what sounds like a train rumbling underneath. The hotel provides breakfast if you book through its website directly. The breakfast is fine, with a variety of basic cheeses, deli meats, yogurt, cereals, and fruit, with coffee, tea, juice, toast, and oatmeal available. We don’t think the hotel has many other communal amenities. There are also multiple dining options in the immediate vicinity. However, if you’re looking for a basic hotel that provides a bed, bathroom, and breakfast without any fancy additional amenities that’s fairly affordable and in a convenient location, the Athena should fit that bill.

We stayed at the Athena Hotel during our summer holidays as a family of four, and it was such a wonderful experience! Our room was beautiful and cozy, with the cleaning being absolutely top-notch. This clean, cozy, and simple hotel was perfect for taking the kids sightseeing. The location couldn’t have been better, with ideal links to local buses and trains. It really was the perfect base for our 5-day trip!
One of the best parts? We got a healthy breakfast every morning for free just because we booked through their website! Such a nice bonus that set us up for the day.
What made our stay even more special was the staff. The hotel is family-owned, and we had the pleasure of meeting two amazing siblings who work at the front desk and in housekeeping. It’s so rare to find a business like this these days, but it really added a personal and special touch to our stay.
We will definitely be returning to the Athena for any future London trips and will be recommending this wonderful hotel to all of our friends and family! Thank you for the lovely stay!
Best wishes,
The Delaney Family

the rating does not simply offer well, which is the case here. the hotel is very well placed, close to Paddington station and the subways/buses, access to Hyde Park on foot. The staff is very friendly and the room clean, the bedding correct. however, for a room at a fairly high price, the standards are not quite up to standard: the material in the bathroom was rusty and threatened to stay in your hands with every handling and room quite small. the pdj extra was not very expensive but absolutely more than basic. fortunately we had not booked it for the whole stay, the nearby restaurants offered much better.

Stayed in room 53 in the basement we were given a choice of two twin rooms and we picked downstairs because it was so much bigger and cooler during the hot weather. We had a very comfortable stay and the room was perfect for us. We experienced no issues with noise and we were surprised as so many reviews say the noise affected them downstairs but we seriously didn’t see any problem whatsoever! Maybe some people just enjoy complaining! The staff were fab and the breakfast was so yummy it was a shame we didn’t book on their website so we could have got it for free but will definitely book direct on our next trip! We will be back for sure

We had a wonderful long stay here it truly felt like home away from home. The staff were so friendly and supportive in helping us with all our questions and excursions around London. The front desk helped us book many tours which made our trip really fun.
We stayed downstairs in the basement, our room was very spacious and immaculately clean with daily housekeeping. We stayed for over a week and our sheets and pillow cases were changed middway through and towels replenished regularly. They even let us store our luggage on check out until 8pm free of charge!
We had such a great experience at this hotel and will definitely return, thank you to all the amazing staff for making our vacation one to remember!

Trigger warning : this is a long review
As an asian/american from california, first time UK traveller, this walking/train commuting is all new to me. I did alot of researching and review reading to make sure that i would choose the right hotel for my taste.
I chose Athena:
first for the location. It is VERY close to paddington station, which is kinda the main hub going to london's outskirts, heathrow express and also close to the the tubes ( did i say that correctly ). Also ALOT of restaurants, convenient store and laundry place is very close as well.
Second reason is that most of the reviews i saw online was positive. My stay here felt like im their house guest. Room service is done everyday, fresh towels and very clean room. Breakfast is complimentary. My first day we went to durdle door and needed to bring snacks for the trip, the very nice lady from the kitchen let us borrow her lunchbox so we can bring the porridge while driving.. so sweet of her.
Third reason is that the staff are all amazing and very friendly.
Mario Jr, who helped us check in and settle our car parking ( we rented a car so we can just drive outside london for 3 days. Parking is $15 per day, book early coz its limited spots)
Mo from night shift was also nice, funny guy as well.
And for Meliha, she was very accomodating, friendly and helpful.
For the rooms, its cute, small but cozy. Typical bed and breakfast. Bathroom is medium size, shower has a rainfall shower head and handheld so you can use both. maybe the only thing i didnt like is that the shower glass is only half of the shower area, so put like a towel on the floor so you wont slip when you get out of the shower area.
They also have luggage storage which is very convenient if you're planning to go somewhere then come back.
Overall, my stay at Athena was amazing. I felt at home.
Thank you everyone and keep up the good work.

Pretty much a VERY small room suitable for sleeping and showering before going out. Bare bone amenities (had to ask for replacement towels more than once). Nothing to write home about but it was clean and the staff was pleasant. A small "vanilla" room. Only criticism would be I have stayed in much nicer hotels for the price I payed but it was comparable for the area. You definitely are paying for the location. You are getting Nothing else for the high price but to go lower you will sacrifice cleanliness or safety. Room rate aside, little to complain about and little to commend.

Write review Athena hotel, basic and broken English. Say the hotel was lovely run by a delightful family and multilingual staff who spoke Greek Albanian and Bulgarian which was helpful to us being from Greece. Our room was clean and well kept with housekeeping. Breakfast was simple but very good for the price we paid, we ended up enjoying it every day. We will happily return

Travelled here from the US with my husband and 3 young children. We stayed in a family room meaning we could all be together which is so much better than separate rooms with interconnecting doors, especially with young children! It was really hard to find a room that could sleep all of us together and The Athena hotel was so perfect for this!
The rooms were very comfortable clean and cosy. Loved that there was a tea and coffee station in the room! The daily housekeeping was amazing and our room was kept spotless throughout our whole trip. One day we needed extra towels and a fan later at night and the night shift was able to provide this for us. The 24 hour reception is great we felt so secure and looked after!
The reception team were so helpful in recommending us places to see and local restaurants. We booked directly with the hotel which meant we enjoyed the free breakfast every day and the little ones loved the lollipops from the breakfast ladies! Thanks for everything and we will be back!!
