Our stay was great, to 6 adults in the room for 6, with 3 bunk beds, with their individual curtains. Each bed has its own socket and personal desk lamp. We each had a magnetic card to access our room and various spaces such as sanitary areas. Under each bunk bed are 2 safe cases where we could pick up our important belongings that were closed with a lock we had planned.
The beds were made when we arrived, the room was clean. The only downside was the heat without the possibility of turning down the heating. The common rooms toilets and showers were very good, as at the campsite, and cleaned very regularly. Breakfast in the downstairs room was at the top, self-serve and unlimited, we had enough to feast: bread of half or wholemeal, bread chocolate, croissant, muffins, butter, jams, honey, Nutella, ham, boiled eggs, orange or apple juice, various hot drinks.
I recommend without problem as the staff is very welcoming and attentive. In addition, we had the opportunity to park our 2 cars in front, in the small courtyard. On the other hand it's not really a parking lot, I find it a bit expensive 10 pounds a day.

I recently stayed at this hostel and had a largely positive experience. The location is excellent, and the building itself is beautiful, boasting a charming Victorian style. I particularly appreciated the cleanliness throughout and the thoughtful addition of privacy curtains on the beds, which were fantastic for both privacy and blocking out light for a good night's sleep.

However, there were a few minor issues that, if addressed, would significantly enhance the guest experience. In the dorm rooms, the lack of bedside shelves or tables was a noticeable inconvenience. Having nowhere to place my phone, glasses, or even a small item like a tissue pack meant I had to resort to tucking my phone between the mattress and the bed frame. Similarly, in the shower, the two small soap dishes weren't sufficient, and the changing area lacked any shelving or a bench to place clothes or toiletries. A small shelf or bench in the changing area would be a great improvement.

The kitchen, while small, was functional. However, it wasn't immediately clear where guests were supposed to eat their meals. Upon arriving in my room, I found dishes left by previous guests, suggesting they had eaten in the room due to a lack of designated dining space. Clearer signage or information regarding dining areas would be beneficial.

The information provided with the room key card mentioned unlimited tea and coffee. However, the coffee machine in the lovely lodge area was out of order throughout my stay. While there was a kettle in the kitchen, no tea bags or coffee were provided. It would be helpful to clarify where guests can access the unlimited tea and coffee.

Despite these minor shortcomings, I enjoyed my stay. The hostel has a lot to offer, and with a few small improvements, it could be truly exceptional.

One final note: there was scaffolding outside the building during my visit, which unfortunately obscured the facade's beauty. I'll have to take my exterior photos on my next trip!

Thank you for sharing such detailed and thoughtful feedback! We’re delighted you enjoyed the location, the Victorian charm of the building, and the cleanliness throughout. The addition of privacy curtains on the beds has been well-received, and we’re thrilled they enhanced your comfort during your stay. We’ll certainly look into your suggestions as these conveniences help to improve our guests’ experience. We’re also sorry for the confusion regarding the unlimited tea and coffee and for the inconvenience caused by the out-of-service coffee machine. We’ll review how we communicate these amenities to ensure clarity moving forward. We acknowledge that the scaffolding may have detracted from the exterior’s aesthetic during your visit and hope to welcome you back once renovations are complete so you can fully appreciate the beauty of the building. Thank you for your constructive criticism—it’s reviews like yours that help us grow and enhance our offerings. We’re glad you enjoyed your stay overall and hope to host you again soon! Kind regards, Team Palmers

I was absolutely impressed with this beautiful picturesque lodge; the facilities are excellent, be it the pub where I watched England win the EURO2024 semi-finals,
the restaurant, self-kitchen facilities, locker and the bunk bed rooms,
The whole place is squeaky clean, the staff with oodles of energy and always happy
to help and accommodative to the maximum extent.
The £7 continental breakfast is a blast and I absolutely recommend it,
There are multiple individual sitting areas with mirror, lighting and even hairdryers
when you come out of a hot shower. The shower and bathroom facilities are in abundance and never crowded because they aren't inside the bunkbed rooms and are available in every floor of the building, open to one and all that are lodging in this beautiful facility. The showers are hospital white and very clean.
They have a late leave payment option if you aren't exaclty leaving at the check out time and this is a huge saving grace if you travelled late night etc.,

I was a bit clumsy with my folding bike on an occasion as I just bought it and this was my trip outside of kings Lynn with the bike and I will be more fluent and cautious the next time.

My only wish would be that they accommodate the lodger for more number of days in a calendar year (or half year) as they haven't any franchise elsewhere and it is a shame that I couldn't be allowed for longer amount of days to spend my holidays,
I will add photos later as I left my cell phone at my apartment

Thank you and see you soon, Cheers, Raju/Mohana Cheliah

This place was great!

The building was gorgeous and all of the amenities were labeled, high quality, and well-organized. Each bed had curtains for privacy, as well as a personal lamp and several outlets. There were ample bathrooms, showers, and gathering spaces—including a few lighted desks in the hallways.

I always felt cared for by the staff.

The downstairs lockers were digital and easy to operate, but you could also just bring your own lock to store things in the drawers or cupboards near your bed (I wish I had done that because it could get a bit crowded and hectic at the downstairs lockers).

They ran a loud fan at night which helped provide white noise to cover comings and goings (I was in an 18-bed mixed-gender dorm).

I loved that this was such a quick straight walk from the station.

I'd definitely stay here again!

I had a very agreeable stay at Palmers Lodge. I stayed in the 24 bed mixed dorm and although I was anxious about sharing with so many people, including men, everything went well! The room had great heating, the bed was comfortable, with a comforter that actually kept you warm and comfy. My bed didn’t have a pillow and I simply went to the reception where a nice lady of the staff told me she’d get it fixed; not even 20mns later, someone came to give me a fresh pillow.
Having a bed with curtains was actually what made the balance tip in favor of Palmers; they’re a really nice touch. Space could get a bit cramped but I had such a good bed placement that I cannot complain and the curtains really help with detaching yourself from the packed room.
The showers were ALWAYS clean, no matter what time of the day or night, the cleaning staff worked hard to keep the space spotless; even in my room, the bins were changed daily! Big shoutout to them!! Water was always warm and with good pressure, as well. And there are hooks and little spaces where you can put your wash bag, towels and clothes.
The kitchen is not as small as I imagined it be given the previous reviews, but since I only used it twice, my opinion may not be the most useful. Only thing I could « complain » about is the lack of handheld shower heads as it can get a bit tricky to shower with the overhead ones in use if you don’t want to get your hair wet.
Apart from that, very good! Would recommend!!

Everything was clean, the staff was really friendly but unfortunately there were some major downsides.

The breakfast isn't even worth a mention... You get toast, too hard boiled eggs, cheap juices and hot drinks, butter, marmalade, some fruits, ham and cheese for 7,50, which really isn't worth the price.

The ensuite dorm was not worth the money... The showers didn't have curtains (the others outside did) - which means that all the stuff you take inside gets wet. I don't really get why they don't just put curtains inside.

The "lockers" inside the rooms need padlocks that you need to bring yourself - which they don't mention beforehand so I didn't bring any.

I had to rent a locker outside the room, which wasn't only bothersome but also extremely expensive. 2 gbp for 4 hours, 4 gbp for 12 hours, 6 gbp for 24 hours. Depending on how long you stay it adds up. (Yes you can buy a padlock, but depending on how long you stay and if you need the rented locker anyway because you need to store your luggage before or after checkout it may not make that much sense to do so)

It's a minor thing but; it would've been nice to have a scale to weigh luggage.

There was only one power outlet at the ensuite bedroom at my bed... Which meant I had to choose what to plug in to charge during the night. Other rooms had more outlets and even USB ports.

The "guest kitchen" is also a restaurant/pub and it's extremely loud during evening/night. Depending on where your room is you'll hear the music or the people going in/out during night time. You'll also hear the people infront of the Hostel talking depending on where your room is situated. The walls are really thin. Generally it seems that most people staying there are there to have fun and you'll be woken up in the middle of the night, early morning etc. So if you're not there to party I'd probably go elsewhere.

The beds were loud, whenever someone above me would turn I'd hear it loudly. All in all there's no way to get a good nights rest without earplugs.

Hi there, Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback with us. We appreciate your kind words about our cleanliness and friendly staff. However, we are sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations in several areas. Regarding breakfast, we strive to offer a variety of items to suit different tastes, but we understand that it may not have met your preferences. Your feedback is valuable, and we will review our breakfast options to ensure we provide better value. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the lack of shower curtains in the ensuite dorms. This is something we are currently addressing to improve our guests' comfort. Additionally, we understand the frustration with the lockers. While we do mention the need for personal padlocks on our website, we will make sure this information is more prominently displayed. We're also reviewing our pricing for locker rentals to ensure it is fair and competitive. Regarding power outlets, we are working on enhancing our room amenities, and your feedback will help us prioritize these improvements. We understand the importance of having sufficient charging options for our guests. We apologize for the noise levels from the restaurant/pub and other guests. Our aim is to create a comfortable environment for all guests, whether they are here to relax or socialize. We are looking into ways to better manage noise levels and will take your feedback into account as we make these improvements. Lastly, we appreciate your suggestion about having a luggage scale and will consider adding one for guest convenience. Thank you again for your constructive feedback. We hope you will consider staying with us again in the future, giving us the opportunity to provide you with a better experience. Best regards, Maria-Palmers Lodge team

The reception staff were friendly and informative.

There are separate safe spaces for females only to sleep and access bathroom facilities.

The staff maintain the premises clean and tidy throughout the day.

Navigating around the building can be a bit confusing as it is a very large premises .

I couldn't get the lift to work, so took the stairs; a lot of steps.
Curtains along your bunk beds for privacy.

The kitchen is extremely small, three people at one time would be a squeeze . However there are facilities on site to buy cooked food and beverages .

The lounge area is huge with sofas and individual chairs to relax on .

Lovely courtyard outdoors to sit and relax , feels like you are abroad on holiday when the sun is shinning.

The building is historic and it makes you feel as if you are a guest on a grand English mansion.

Great location for public transports and ships in a decent area.

Hi there, Thank you for your thoughtful review! We’re thrilled that you enjoyed the classic English mansion experience and found our staff friendly and informative. It's great to hear that you appreciated our clean facilities, female-only spaces, and the privacy curtains on the bunk beds. We’re sorry for any difficulty you experienced navigating the building and with the lift, and we’ll certainly look into these concerns. Regarding the kitchen, we understand that its size can be a bit tight, especially during busy times. Unfortunately, due to the nature of our historic Victorian building, we’re limited in making structural changes. However, we hope the on-site food and beverage options provided a convenient alternative. We’re glad you enjoyed relaxing in our lounge and courtyard, and that our location was ideal for your visit. We look forward to welcoming you back for another memorable stay! Best regards, Maria-Palmers Lodge Team

This was a really great place to stay as a solo traveler.
I came with only a backpack, so the lockers were perfect for me but I can see how they might be a little cramped for someone with more luggage. A few of my roommates had their suitcases near their bunks, as they wouldn't fit in the lockers. If you don't have a lock, they sell them at reception for a small fee (and they're really pretty, in my opinion).
The staff were very nice and helpful, the lodge itself was super close to a lot of transit options, although getting to central London(ish) was about a half-hour metro ride. The interior is as magical as it looks in the pictures. The little bar downstairs is likewise very pretty, and they had good breakfast options.
The curtains attached to the bunks didn't extend the full depth of the bunk, that is to say, 5-7cm (2-3 inches) nearest to the mattress were uncovered and I could see below. Much better than no curtains, obviously, but there was space. I really liked the little table attached on the inside of the bunk, it let me keep my journal right next to me at night.
The bathrooms are shared with the entirety of the floor, rather than individual bathrooms per room, so I would recommend packing shower shoes. The bathrooms were well-maintained, if a bit muggy from the steam of showers. They also had a few little makeup stations with a hairdryer for the ladies near the restrooms, which was lovely.
The hostel is near some delicious food options that are open until around 23:00, so if you come in late (like I did) there's no need to fret about food. The Cottage also has a kitchen until around 22:00 but the options are limited, from what I understand.
In general, this was a great place to stay, I 100% recommend it.

Hi there, Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed review! We're delighted to hear that your stay with us felt like a fairyland, what a magical compliment! 😊 We’re glad the lockers suited your needs as a solo traveller, and appreciate your understanding about the sizing for larger luggage. Your feedback is invaluable, and we’ll keep it in mind as we continue to make improvements. We're thrilled to hear you found our staff welcoming and enjoyed the convenience of our location and the charm of our interiors. Thank you for pointing out the small gap in the bunk curtains we understand how a fully private space can make a difference, and we'll certainly consider this for future upgrades. We're also happy to hear you appreciated the little table in the bunk it’s the perfect spot for a journal or a late-night read, isn’t it? Your note about the shared bathrooms and the helpful tip to bring shower shoes is great advice for future guests! It’s wonderful to hear that you found them clean and enjoyed the additional amenities like the makeup stations. Lastly, we’re so pleased you enjoyed the nearby food options and found the Cottage’s bar and breakfast to your liking. We aim to provide a cosy and convenient experience for all our guests. Thank you again for your kind words and thoughtful recommendations. It was truly a pleasure having you stay with us, and we hope to welcome you back on your next adventure! Not a great place to stay. The vibe was off, the staff not particularly friendly or helpful, and the other travelers evidently felt as uncomfortable as I was staying there.. The bathrooms were always a mess, and notably there are like zero places to hang or place (shelves, counters, hooks) stuff when you're trying to do simple things like take a shower or brush your teeth. Paper towels were only available in the basement washroom. All of this made trying to do very basic things very uncomfortable and inconvenient. Barebones is fine, but the right bones have to be there.

When you book on booking.com it just says “parking” as a perk but if your driving here they literally charge airport prices aka almost 50% of the actual room rate just to be able to park there. After complaining about this they said I had to pay £40 or I couldn’t park, I refused as to me it’s disgusting and I’d rather go and pay £100 a night where I’d get parking plus my own bed. Apart from this there is no real sitting area apart from the bar which are very old uncomfortable wooden benches, the room was only a 6 man but with 4 people in there you can’t move. Just to go to the toilet and shower as men you had to go down 2 flights of stairs every time as the toilets on the my floor were female only. The “kitchen” which has “everything you need” definitely does not. It’s literally tiny where I’d literally 1 person is in there, then they have to move out of the kitchen to allow someone else room to even get to the fridge. When you consider the amount of people here and how they describe it online it’s actually a joke. Then when I check out 2 days early staff on the front desk lied to me multiple times about firstly not being able to refund me the 2 days, then it changed to I can get some of it back but not all, it was only when I stood my ground and said I want my money back now, they then “found” a way of giving me it back. I then within 20 minutes found a room with my own large bed, fridge, kettle l, microwave, large bathroom with a walk in shower for £80 for the 2 nights. Bear in mind if I did stay and paid the parking at the hostel, that would have been £90 only id get the luxury of top bunk and 5 other people in a box room. Honestly if your in London for business reasons then this is a shocker. I attached proof that I got my own room for £80 so I legit saved my self £10 and got a way nicer quieter place with FREE PARKING :))) if you didn’t get this by now then no I would not recommend it.

Response from Palmers Lodge SC, Other at Palmers Lodge Swiss Cottage
Responded Aug 22, 2024
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to compose this extensive review! We are sorry to hear that you had an unsatisfactory experience at Palmers Lodge, we hope to clear up some confusion for you. Firstly, on Booking.com and on our website we do put parking as a perk, followed by the conditions that it is £10 per day. This is because we have very limited parking space on our property, but still would like to offer this service to our lovely guests. Additionally, we do offer a range of seating areas all around the Hostel, for example the 24-hour lounge and the garden. Besides this, on the floor in which you were staying, we do indeed have a gender-neutral bathroom that is available for our guests just a short few steps down the corridor from the Female only bathroom, for which is sign posted for your convenience. Furthermore, we are completely understanding of that fact that the guest kitchen is a little on the small side, but we do try to stock it with ''everything you need '' to get the most out of the space. We are unfortunately unable to carry out any renovations, as our beautiful site is listed by the local council, but we do take note of this for any future improvements. To address the accusations of the lies told by the front desk, ''multiple times about ... not being able to be refunded'', you had booked a non-refundable reservation through Booking.com. This means that you won't be able to be refunded on your booking once you had read and agreed to our and Booking.coms' T&Cs, policies (parking notices included) and paid for your stay. You were informed of this at check-in and proceeded to try to bring a challenging energy to our staff, as you swore ''multiple times'' and spoke to staff poorly, while expressing your dismay towards the policies you agreed to prior to your arrival. Our team also experienced your vile language and threatening body language when you went above and beyond, and asked for access to the closed guest kitchen in the middle of the night and were refused, as we were following heath and safety and fire regulations. We eventually, as a team, were so unsatisfied with you as a guest, so much so that we decided, as a gesture of good will, to refund the last days (though you did not pay for parking the entire stay) in the hopes that you would choose this option and vacate the premises. This is the option you took, but not without a show, as you sped through our small pedestrian walk-way ''multiple times'', where our guests ranging from the young, the elderly, and families with children used to enter and exit our front doors. Nevertheless, we are glad that you were able to find accommodation that better suited your wants and needs, but it is unfortunate that you were dissatisfied with your stay with us. Though, we do not expect that you will return to Palmers Lodge, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome other guests that are open to having a great hostel experience! Best wishes, Isis - Team Palmers

On the ground floor there is a single shower cubicle which is along side 3 toilets in a bathroom area. This is a co-ed space but only 1 shower which is a completely enclosed self contained with floor to ceiling door kind of cubicle. Totally private and I would suggest appropriate for an 11 year old.
