I have just returned from an overnight stay in the Provider room. The room was clean and spacious and location of the hotel is great to access all the things to do in Whitby. Breakfast was very filling and freshly made so the short wait was well worth it. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the gin bar...

Despite being a regular visitor of Whitby I'd never made a visit to the White Horse and Griffin before, but I'm so so glad I finally did! My boyfriend and I booked a table on Tuesday night for a meal to celebrate my 21st birthday, and it couldn't have been more perfect. The food was incredible, with both myself and...

What a gem! We decided to visit for a meal as having done some research we found it offered some really interesting dishes not only for my husband who enjoys meat but for me being a vegetarian. There was an excellent choice of meat/fish dishesbut the original and unusual vegetarian options really stood out. Upon arrival I found the specials...

There were 6 people in the restaurant this evening, Easter Monday. Sadly the kitchen was unable to cope. Both our starter and desert orders were incorrect. The people on either side sent their main and desert courses back as inedible. The worst thing was the noise of the radio in the kitchen, possibly football coverage which drowned out the ambient...

We stayed in the Discovery Family Room on the top floor of this lovely rustic hotel. The hotel is located in the heart of Whitby. It was very cosy. The kids loved it and the staff were great. The breakfast was included with our stay and was delicious!

Booked the restaurant for Sunday Lunch. I was quite disappointed. The Sirloin beef was beautiful but cold and I must say the rest was poor. We got one yorkshire pudding a very small roast potato a small dish of broccoli a small dish of cauliflower cheese and butternut squash. We had planned to have a dessert but due to the...

Went for a family meal on Saturday night . If your a group of four table 6 is the best spot. Great food lots of effort in a small menu but all fresh and cooked to perfection.👌🏻 Leah front of house is a really good addition, her smiles and attention really make the service.😁 Wouldn't like to sit in bar...

This is a very quirky, quaint, olde worlde and friendly hotel. The staff were more than accommodating and very attentive during our evening meal and at breakfast. The prices on the evening menu are quite steep but as it was a one night treat we didn't mind. Plenty of choice at breakfast and food was definitely of a good quality....

Friendly staff and good food made an enjoyable few days. However the fittings were neglected, the carpet was in need of a clean, the window blind was broken and the pillows could have been of a better quality.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
