We stayed at the White Horse & Griffen for the second time on 29th January as a birthday treat and saw that it had changed from the firs time we had stayed there. We've been frequenting this place since we first go together in 2007, so we've eaten there more times than we have stayed there. This time we've stayed...

We stayed the one night here, the weather was absolutely freezing! Huge waves, a great sight to see. The hotel restaurant looked very inviting and was full. We were always planning on having fish and chips so not a problem. The room was clean, modern and comfortable. A good night's sleep was had, despite the rattling windows (it is very...

I called into the White Horse & Griffin with my Hubby for dinner on my birthday weekend away after a recommendation from a friend. We must have walked past it loads of times, but never really noticed it before. It's a lovely old quaint building steeped in history, with the restaurant area located at the back and down a couple...

Second visit to this place and once again thoroughly enjoyed by two adults and two children. Sat at the charming fire place table, the service was friendly and efficient. Children's portions can be ordered from pretty much every dish on the menu (and didn't look too much smaller?). All of our party had different dishes and all looked and tasted...

We stayed at the WH&G for two nights, 21st-23rd January, on a Living Social deal. It was our first visit to Whitby and we had a brilliant time. We thought the hotel was absolutely delightful, and we found all the staff very friendly and professional. Unlike in some establishments, we were not made to feel like second-class citizens because we...

This was our third visit in about six years. The hotel keeps improving, it is clear that the owners are putting in a lot of hard work. We love that the rooms are all individual and they have kept many of the original features in an old inn that is hundreds of year's old. The beds are comfortable, the staff...

I visit Whitby every November and stay at this hotel. It is comfortable, quirky, friendly, great food, great staff, great bar! What more can a person want? Just accept the age of this lovely building and do not expect minimalist chic!! All rooms have character to die for................ Also, Stay in to eat in the evening as the food is...

A Christmas Eve family meal at the White Horse & Griffin was great. A dining room full of character and atmosphere. Some of the highlights - the fish and chips (£15), excellently cooked sirloin steaks and the ham terrine starter. A reasonable wine list - the South African Wolftrap red (£22) was particularly memorable. Can't comment on the rooms. Staff...

Had a wonderful two day break, staff friendly, room spacious, bed comfortable, bathroom could be improved( window wouldn't close properly & not remedied when requested which was disappointing as the weather was very cold) The restaurant & food was amazing. The fillet of yorkshire beef & seafood meze for 2 were brilliant. The breakfast room was lovely and the menu...

The good.. Great location, parking 100 yards away, only £6.50 for 24 hours, very good restaurant where we had an excellent sea-food platter, nice relaxed bar area, very friendly and helpful staff.. The not so good.. Our room - Mary Ann Hepworth - wasn't great, especially for the price of £110 for B&B, the bed was on the small side...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
