We have just returned from 2 nights at the Black Swan to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday. What a find, a two minute walk into the centre but to be honest we never wanted to leave the pub. From the wooden beams, cosy dining room, wonderfully comfy four poster bed to the amazing bar with the warm inviting log fire... More

Popped in for a drink on Saturday night with a group of friends in York. Real fire and traditional pub feel with plenty of atmosphere. Great selection of real ale beers and really friendly staff. Worth a visit.

Huge portions of really fantastic food. And the landlord found me a delicious beer (there was a choice of 6) to drink, went well with the rabbit and herby dumplings. This 15th C pub looked well, dressed with skeletal figures for Halloween. Our daughter (autistic) loved all the ghostly goings on. And hugged all the figures. But the lovely landlord... More

Fantastic, cosy, friendly atmosphere. The landlord, Andy, is a great character who made us feel very special and welcome. Comfy four-post bed, and the most delicious gastronomic breakfast in the morning 🍳👌🏻. Now for the spooky bit.. At 06:16 we were both awakened by five loud sharp knocks on our bedroom door. Obviously I didn't go and investigate-I'm not that... More

Visited recently for Lunch. This was the first time in 7 years that I had visited the pub and I was certainly not disappointed. Ordered from the Light Lunch Menu and the quality was excellent along with the overly generous portions. A little disappointed that the Copper Dragon was not on draught, but the Theakston's certainly made up for it.... More

We popped into this one for a late lunch. The choice of drinks was good and the staff were helpful and attentive. The food was a good standard and the pub had a good general atmosphere. The only thing that spoiled it for us was a couple of older, ignorant, loud ladies that kept staring at us. We ended up... More

Delicious vegetarian Sunday lunch. Finally somewhere that realises vegetarians love Yorkshire puddings and gravy just as much as meat eaters! Gorgeous food, lovely service and a huge portion, will definitely visit again

My husband and I decided to try The Black Swan for a meal as we were staying nearby. We were not disappointed. The bar staff were very friendly and the meals were huge and reasonably priced. The hotel is the oldest in York so it is very quirky and full of old worlde character. There is even a carpark alongside... More

My partner and I visited York as a mini honeymoon break. We came to the black swan after hearing about it on the bus tour we had been on earlier in the day. The staff were so friendly and were happy to tell us about the history of the pub and one of the lady's even shown us upstairs in... More

Found this place by chance in the passing, only had time for a couple of drinks, wish we had found it on first day instead of last, however if you love old quirky pubs steeped in history, great real ales with friendly staff then this place is a must!
