We have stayed here quite a few times now and have always enjoyed our visits. William and Jane are great hosts and provide an excellent vegetarian breakfast. They are knowledgeable about the area too. All the rooms we have stayed in have been homely, clean and comfortable - and always a teddy to welcome us!

The owner called me to say they would not be in when I arrived but would leave a key. I arrived at 4pm as agreed, no key. The owners arrived at 5.45, very apologetic but that didn't really make up for nearly 2 hours waiting outside a b & b. No attempt to phone me and odd that the business...

Lovely place. Clean, nice room, nice linens. Our room was in the front over the road, but we did not find it that noisy. Super great cooked breakfasts. Close to everything. Very comfortable stay and I would recommend Monkgate!

Recently spent two nights here. It was in a great location really close to the city wall. I'm not sure I would have liked to have been in a room that fronted onto the main road as it did seem to be quite busy, but my room was located towards the back of the property. Compact, but clean comfortable and...

My wife and myself recently stayed here and what a good find, 5 mins walk to minster area and attractions. On arrival was greeted by the host (William) who told us all about the attractions York had to offer, our room was small but clean and teddy was a nice touch, breakfast was lovely, we parked our car at pub...

We had a warm welcome at the Monkgate. A good breakfast is on offer and the owners are very pleasant and helpful. Our room was warm, comfortable and the en suite bathroom was very good. It's a 10 minute stroll to the centre of York. Parking is available across the road.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Monkgate Guest House is 200 years old and is only five minutes walk from York Minster and the city centre where you will find beautiful shops and restaurants and all York's attractions close to hand. The property was originally three Georgian cottages so it is cosy and rambling with the quaint features you would expect from an older property. We have two rooms on the ground floor and the other rooms are on the first floor accessed by a flight of stairs. Our breakfast room is warm and inviting and we provide a full, freshly cooked English breakfast with eggs cooked to your requirements alongside the other menu options. We have limited off street parking in a narrow driveway at the side of the house, you will be able to forget your car then and walk to all the amenities! We can however try to arrange more parking if necessary. Free wifi is available in the public rooms and most bedrooms. ... more   less
