I stayed here for the 3rd time (and for 3 nights) in early December.

The good: nice grounds, pleasant lobby area, good bar service. (I only had a drink and never ate at the restaurant). Also: very nice gym with jacuzzi, sauna, steam-room and a small pool. This is a rarity in Oxford and is the main reason I stay(ed) here.

The bad: some front desk staff and (some) rooms. Some staff members
are pleasant and helpful. Two were not.

1) On the evening of my arrival, I asked the front desk lady to give me a
quiet room so I can get some decent sleep after almost 20 hours on
planes/buses/etc. She assured me that room 107 is it. It was anything but...
It's horrible room that everyone should avoid. It's located almost above
the reception, right across from a big/heavy door that everyone
uses (and SLAMS) whenever they enter the 1st floor from the staircase.
Also, it's near the elevator shaft and, one hears its every sound (day and night).
Finally, this room has two single beds that were obviously designed for anorexics.
Being neither skinny nor fat, I had a hard time not falling off the edge.
The desk is placed at the foot of the bed so that the
chair cannot be slid under the desk and thus conveniently blocks passage.

2) The other negative interaction with the staff was when I was leaving the room
late (about 11am) on Sunday. I had the do-not-disturb sign displayed until that time.
I asked the front desk clerk (skinny, tall-ish blond guy) to tell housekeeping to please
make up the room. He proceeded to tell me that I must go back up and turn the do-not-disturb sign around in order to get service since that's how it's done. I then asked him to call the housekeeping to save me the trip up. He wasn't happy to do that, though he did do it, telling me that this is an exception, and acting as if he were doing me a favor.

To say I’m disappointed in their Christmas party night would be an understatement. At a cost of £45 per person it’s more expensive than other venues but having experienced a great time last year at Sandford my expectations were high. Dinner was not served at 8pm, more like 8:30pm. Butter on the table but we had to ask for bread rolls, these came out in between the starter and main course. No one knew who had ordered what, despite being asked twice for our menu choices one month prior. Dance floor space was to small to accommodate the amount of people attending. What aggravates me is that when I called to book I was told that the evening was sold out, only to receive a call back to say they could fit us in. Clearly they couldn’t, or shouldn’t have done this as it was far to over crowded. Seeing a manager walk around with sheets of paper, I’m sure he felt important but my small children could have done a better job. Mwansa was the young lad serving our table, he was by far the only positive of the experience and deserves some recognition. Food was ok but the whole evening was not worth the cost. Will not be returning next year.

Stayed for a weekend. Large hotel with nice restaurant. Good evening meal and also enjoyed breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday. Used as a base to go to Bicester village and also walked into Oxford. Our room was on far side of hotel but nice, quiet and comfortably warm. I was expecting an old hotel but this was a nice and would happily return. Agree you had to pay for parking but not end of world.

I've just come from a top end London hotel in Knightsbridge so will try to be objective in my review.

Charming buildings and great property giving you a real "English country feel".

Overall, a good hotel relative to price but don't believe it has the same "Principal" quality. Perhaps it's a new re-brand. I did see the wing closer to the spa/fitness and seems like they've been refurbished (not sure). But the area where we were in was older and in need of an upgrade. My room was average and old.

Usual amenities as expected. I didn't eat in the restaurant but quality of food is excellent for room service.

Note - this is simply an observation (not criticism), majority of the staff are foreign-born which is great and have non-British accents. I only mention this just to manage expectation of future guests. As on the exterior, the property depicts an "old English farm property in rural countryside", I was expecting stereotypical British country hospitality (if there is such a thing). However, it wasn't always felt. No fault of the staff but just cultural differences. They are however exceedingly welcoming and helpful and will do anything to make sure you have an enjoyable stay.

Dear CLGT Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at the hotel. Currently we have all our ground floor refurbished and also most of our bedrooms which has created the deluxe section. Eastwyke House is our farm property within the grounds and contains 10 bedrooms. Hotel can be reached by a 15 minute walk along the river bank from the centre of Oxford. Good parking but no mention of the fee charged when booked. Pleasant room configuration. Useful exercise room, swimming pool and steam room. Buffet breakfast quite extensive. Evening meal a little expensive with limited menu but adequate to service appetite. Mostly overseas staff, polite and helpful.

Dear Brian Thank you for taking the time to post your review. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay and also had time to visit our leisure and spa area - I am pleased to say our beauty treatments have proved very popular along with the pool and sauna facility. We pride ourselves on offering a great breakfast and like to cater for all dietary requirements and needs - we have also just introduced our all day menu and appreciate all feedback. I do hope you will return in the near future. Kind regards Wendy Procter
