We stayed in Bury St Edmunds at The Bushel, about 5 minutes walk from the town centre. This was another covid place with all the staff wearing visors and with screens around everything. The staff were very pleasant and we had a nice room in a converted stableblock. I was pretty tired by the time we arrived (not used to 6 hours of driving any more!) and we had an early dinner at 5.30. Gammon and chips with a side of cider was just what I needed!
Although the bed was comfortable and the room quiet I had a restless night and woke early. Luckily, Deb did as well so we were both at breakfast by 8AM! I had eggs benedict and yoghurt with fresh fruits and Deb had a full English. The portions weren't large but it was enough and service was friendly and efficient.

We stayed at the bushel on Saturday 4th February. We had a very cold, windy ride up on the motorbike from Essex and were met with a lovely warm, spacious, comfortable room with plenty of space for all our bike gear. The bed was like a marshmallow-cloud hybrid! I don't sleep well at all, but only woke up once during the night, pretty unheard of for me! The breakfast was delicious, my egg was poached to perfection and it set us up well for the wet windy ride home! All of the staff were lovely, but Pete and Ellie were especially friendly and welcoming, made us want to return for future visits. Thanks for a perfect stay!

I had high hopes of this pub, having spent over 2 and a half hours to get here. The food was good, the beer was OK (it's a Greene King tied pub so the choice is limited but the cellar felt well kept).

But wha really stood out for me was the quality of the staff. Check-in was excellent, and despite being the only person on duty they took time to show me to my room.

As luck would have it, my room (room 9) was right over the kitchen and the freezer door was malfunctioning. This resulted in a loud noise in my room. I called the duty manager who came to my room, agreed there was a loud noise, apologised, and said that if he couldn't sort it out they would 'adjust' my bill. They were true to their word, and I would not hesitate to stay here again.

So not a great night's sleep, but I always try to judge by how people respond to challenges, and they honestly couldn't have done more to sort it.

Apart from that, the bed was comfortable, the food was great, the customer service was outstanding, and I would definitely stay here again, if not in room nine!

Booked for a one night stay. On arrival we were shown to our room, which was very cold. The lady who showed us in was apparently aware of this and showed us a fan heater, and suggested we could close the window. The central heating was switched off, and only came on for an hour later in the evening, in temperatures of 4 C.? We later found the casement window had dropped, and the catch couldn't be closed properly. We returned later after going out for a meal, and found our room was immediately above where the 'Hotel' had booked a singer for the night. The noise level was such the the sound reverberated off the walls, and we couldn't even hold a conversation. Sleep was impossible until the early hours. In the morning we went down for breakfast, and being rather cold I asked if it would be possible to have plain porridge for breakfast instead of cereal. I never got the opportunity to try it however, as when attempting to order my cooked breakfast I was told ' you can have a cooked breakfast if you pay for it'. I pointed out that our room rate included breakfast, but was told 'It's the policy'. Having stayed in numerous GK Inns I knew this wasn't so, but pointing this out proved futile. We weren't even offered toast! We paid, left, and had breakfast in town.
The GK inns I've stayed at before have usually been OK, and many have been really good.
This is by a wide margin, the worst GK inn I've ever stayed at, and I wouldn't encourage anybody to even consider staying here Apart from anything else, and as a previous reviewer has already noted, " I needed to go home to get some sleep"...

We checked in early in the afternoon, and the building appeared to have old world charm in abundance. Shared a bottle of wine in the rear garden, and then dropped our bits in the room. The room was sizeable and well equipped. After a pleasant evening exploring Bury, we returned to the hotel at 11.30 to find the hotel locked up, with no staff to contact. We struggled to gain entry into the hotel via the rear car park entrance, and eventually made it to our room.
The room was excessively warm, and none of the room windows were able to be opened. After propping our room door open to get some flowing air, one of us finally gave up and went to sleep in the car. A very poor interrupted nights sleep, despite a very comfortable bed, and unfortunately no night staff to explain things to. The shower and bathroom the following morning were spacious and well equipped. The best part of the experience. Upon checkout in the morning, a member of staff immediately asked us whether we had left access doors open to the building, which we did not. We were not asked if we had a pleasant nights sleep, and were not offered any form of refund, despite explaining how poor the experience was. Such a shame, because you don’t pay £85 to stay in a hotel and not only have a bad nights sleep, but also be questioned about whether you had left doors open. Surely the job of staff is to firstly ask how your stay was? Another member of staff stood close by as we were being asked these questions. I won’t be returning to stay here. Such a shame, because the building is really nice. Customer service on the other hand, fell short on this occasion.

Today we visited The Bushel with friends for dinner and drinks. We unfortunately arrived too late for a roast dinner however the staff were really accommodating in letting us know what meals were still available. The food was delicious, absolutely spot on. We stayed for several hours enjoying great company, fabulous rapport with the staff and loved every minute. Highly recommend for a visit.

Great place to stay & central to all amenities. The pub itself gets busy in the evenings but we didn’t experience any noise at closing time. We had breakfast both mornings; plenty of choice & the hot food was cooked to order, well cooked & presented.
Rooms were more than adequate with a comfy bed, tea/coffee making facilities & shower room.
I would have given it 5/5 but the lighting in both the bedroom & shower room isn’t bright enough when drying/styling hair, applying make-up etc & there is insufficient shelving in the shower room for toiletries. If these improvements are made, it would be perfect.
Please don’t be put off by this, though, as we’d definitely recommend this place & would stay here again!

Staying at the Bushel for 2 nights and have found it excellent. The room is very nicely decorated and the bed very comfy and a great shower and bathroom. The staff are very friendly and gave us advise on the trains to Cambridge. We had food on our first evening and it was good , also between 4 - 7 Monday to Thursday its 2 for 1 on certain drinks. We loved Bury St Edmunds and can highly recommend staying at the Bushel.

Me and my partner had an awful experience at this bed and breakfast. We booked two nights for a romantic getaway which was clearly stated in the booking. The room wasn't too bad apart from the lack of tea, coffee and water which most hotels provide. It wasn't the cleanest room either but that didn't really bother us too much. The awful experience happened one night when we left our room to go and smoke a cigarette outside together, we were both a little tipsy from drinking and were having a really lovely time. That was until I realised that I had accidentally forgotten our room key on the way out! By this time it was midnight so we had no choice but to call a number that we saw on a sign on the door stating to call for any issues we may have out of hours. So we did, we called the number and very politely explained our honest mistake, apologising sincerely for the situation. Whoever greeted us at the door (I think it may have been the owner) looked at us with a look of pure disgust and just before going to open the door, he paused and looked at us again and asked what our names were, with a look and tone of voice that almost insinuated that he didn't believe that we had a room at the pub - I believe this could be due to the fact that I have dreadlocks and wear alternative clothing and me and my partner are quite young. My partner stated his name and then he unlocked the door very grumpily. My partner apologised again very sincerely as he could feel the negative vibe and this man said in a very harsh and sarcastic tone "Oh, no worries, it's not like I have to be awake in 4 hours or anything!" which was very rude and made us feel very bad and uneasy. I must add that I am autistic and suffer with extreme social anxiety which made the situation even worse as it caused me a great deal of anxiety and worry. The door opened and the atmosphere felt very intense, almost like we was being told off. He walked behind us up to our room, not daying a word. He didn't accept our apologies, he just ignored us and was very rude and moody. This made me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome. We will never go to this pub again, let alone book a room there. We did not feel like we were at a professional and friendly hotel.
