A grand house with contemporary style, a leafy setting near the heart of the city. Jesmond Dene House is neither a townhouse nor a country house hotel. It's simply 40 well-designed bedrooms and suites in a richly historic building offering understated luxury and rather good food. Overlooking the wooded valley of Jesmond Dene, the privately owned hotel guarantees peace, escapism and a refreshing change. Newcastle's city centre, however, is only a five-minute drive. The hotel recently received 4 red stars and the AA Hotel of the Year 2008-2009. Our restaurant Fern is an upmarket neighbourhood Dining Room and Bar, with generosity and the highest standard of produce at its core. Our food is; contemporary, non-fussy, and prepared with love, care and attention. We offer relaxed, informal Geordie hospitality, and memorable dining experiences. Ferns uncompromising approach to the finer details of hospitality makes Fern the ideal place to, meet, eat, drink & celebrate.

Jesmond Dene House is frequently celebrated for its attentive staff and comfortable, tastefully adorned rooms, although the service can sometimes falter. The hotel's atmosphere and cleanliness receive high marks, with guests enjoying the scenic location and diverse amenities, despite occasional maintenance and noise complaints. While opinions on value for money vary, with some finding it pricey, others believe the quality justifies the cost. The spacious rooms and modern bathrooms are a hit, but some travelers note the need for better in-room amenities.

I have never stayed at Jesmond Dene House but stayed with my 2 children age 12 and 9 for a close friend’s wedding that was held here. My children were impressed by the comfy beds that JDH had put out for them in our family room. There was also a toy duck and a little teddy bear that added a touch of fun for my kids. My double bed was also very comfy. Molten Brown toiletries was lovely. JDH uses traditional keys to enter their rooms unlike newer hotels but no problem here.

The wedding reception with canapés, drinks was lovely and the dinner was very yummy. Fish cake starter, beef main and brownie dessert gorgeous. Wine pouring was slightly slow but I suspect they wanted to control the wine and avoid drunk wedding guests.
The staff were very attentive. I was best man. Checkout next morning easy.

2 points for improvement. The peach ice tea at the check in reception when you arrive is a lovely touch but my 9 year old son who loves peach ice tea found it very watered down by the ice. He was disappointed.

Secondly, breakfast is a small window from 8 to 10 with checkout out at 11. No surprise then that majority of guests arrive at 9. Not enough staff to man the breakfast service. I counted about 4 maybe 5 staff all looking rather stressed. It takes away from the calm vibes JDH otherwise gives. Staff was trying to seat us then take my coffee order then our hot food order. My coffee came promptly but without a coffee cup. There were no juice cups and jugs of apple and orange juice was empty. Spoons to scoop cereals were missing. Order were taken promptly. The young man who brought our hot breakfast asked me if there was anything else we needed but I felt guilty to have to ask my children if they needed anything else for their smoke salmon or avocado since he looked so stressed and needing to press on in serving others. In short more staff would have made the breakfast a better experience.

Our previous visits to Jesmond Dene House have been very enjoyable and this one was no exception. We arrived before lunch knowing our room wouldn't be available but Alex on reception gave us a warm welcome, safely stored our luggage and even checked and advised us on the delays on the Metro as we told her we were going to use it to go to the city centre. We returned later in the day and were welcomed by a different receptionist who gave us our room key and told us our luggage was in the room. Great service.
We knew beforehand that as we were staying on a Monday night the Fern Restaurant would not be open and we would be dining off the house menu. This was no hardship as there is plenty of choice and the food is of a high quality and cooked perfectly. Service was also brilliant.
The hotel is easy to reach by car, convenient for the city centre while being located in a country setting, having the relaxing vibe of a country house hotel. I look forward to my next visit to Newcastle and Jesmond Dene House.

Wonderful return again following a previous stay in January 2024. We were delighted to stay in the New House which is an annexe next door. We stayed on the top floor (42) accessed by a private staircase to a wonderful airy room/flat. Loved the urban hand/shower wash and lotion. Bathroom well equipped as well as the fridge with a choice of drinks & snacks (added payment). It's literally only 1 minute to the main house for breakfast/ dinner etc. Breakfast fantastic choice, evening bar meals can be limited but we enjoyed a generous, very tasty fish & chip meal. The night we arrived Sunday the main dining area was closed but this did not present a problem as we preferred the relaxed ambience of the bar area. There is a beautiful walk on the doorstep into Jesmond Dene park and the Metro (Ilford Rd) into Newcastle is only 15 mins away. Staff were very friendly and helpful as always. We only live about 25 miles away but love to return and stay if we are booked into a Consert at the Glass House Gateshead or just chilling utilising Jesmond Dene House as a base to explore on the Metro to the coast or city centre. Thank you for making us feel so welcome including your maintenance staff who was busy working in the garden today.

We have recently returned from a three night stay at this hotel. This is our second visit, having stayed for four nights in March 2024.
The hotel looks impressive from the outside and parking is plentiful. Initial impressions are good when you enter giving the feeling of walking into an old manor house with wooden panelling etc. The staff we found to be very polite and helpful and are the one positive in the hotel.
Our room was , on first impressions, of average size and appeared clean . On closer inspection mold could be seen around the appliances in the bathroom. The windows are also mouldy and in places rotten. The mattress could do with being replaced as lumpy. The lights provide an interesting challenge when trying to work out which switch does what and the lights in the wardrobe where the tea tray and fridge was located did not turn off , leaving a glowing light emitting from the wardrobe at night. There is a mini bar and snacks in the room with a price list which adds up to £70 , an amount they take off you on arrival should you decide to consume any items. We are still waiting for this to be refunded as promised. However, check the items as in our room some were missing, which we mentioned at reception in order to avoid being charged for something we haven't had.
Breakfast is a mix between self service and waiter service. The staff are very polite however, despite the hotel being relatively quiet, lots of items on the shelf serving buffet, ie fruit cocktail orange juice etc soon ran out and took a very long time to be replaced,
Breakfast itself, although being tasty was sparse for the amount they charge. More style over substance I'm afraid. And the decor in areas looks tired.
All in all an average stay attempting to be pretentious without the quality in place to back it up. For the price they charge it could and should be much better.

This has to be one of the best hotels I have stayed in a long time for customer service. It was like stepping back in time, in a positive way. The Staff were exceptional!! Old School Customer Service. Their helpfulness felt genuine which is rare today. Nothing was too much trouble. We arrived late but wanted to make a cup of tea with fresh milk, I happened to mention this to the lady on the phone when confirming booking. When we arrived the a jug of fresh milk had been placed in the fridge in our room. The lady who checked us in, was polite, efficient and quick, but there was a difference in her approach it felt genuine and not false. This ethos seemed to be through the whole hotel. Every touch point with the staff was with the view that nothing was too much trouble. Sometimes it is the little things that have the greatest impact.

The lounge was lovely to work in and they didn't make you feel you were taking up space. Breakfast looking out over the garden in a very light airy room and was served on large plates so did not look a lot but was filling and hot, which is always a bonus at a hotel. Room we stayed in was beautiful, very clean and well designed, with lots of little touches. Will return and would recommend. Complements to the management team as whatever they are doing, it flowing downwards in a positive way to their team.

We use this lovely venue for business a lot. We’ve seen standards fluctuate. The small touches by the staff usually make a big difference. We were running a workshop full of influential directors. Room was too small. Service ok but, really, egg mayonnaise plus very runny coronation chicken (chicken two ways we joked!) and a few scattered crisps! Come on! We stayed for a drink. Wine waiter sub-standard too! Not a great start to the new regime. Get a grip folks!

Stayed as a couple for our anniversary. We were given a room that was located where there would be least amount of outside noise. We loved the room. Clean, spacious and was surprised with the macarons that said 'Happy Anniversary' and personal note welcoming us and congratulating us on our special day.

Dinner was also a wonderful experience for both of us. The Maitre D sat us at a table that afforded us a lovely view yet privacy from other diners and again, wished us a Happy Anniversary. Our server was excellent from start to finish. Never intrusive and had the right timings. The food is something else as well. Every morsel of food was an explosion of flavours in your mouth. We even ordered 3 kinds of dessert to share between us.

I would recommend having their breakfast if you are staying here. The food we ordered wasnt greasy and their continental has a varied enough selection even for the pickiest eater.

Check out was also smooth and easy. Thank you to the staff of Jesmond Dene. The setting, the house, the room was wonderful but the staff have completely elevated the experience even more.

Stayed overnight in an allegedly 'Deluxe room'. With breakfast £193 - which is certainly not the value we encountered.

Room on the 3rd floor (Room 32) and shown up by a receptionist. As soon as we got there he offered to show how the Velux windows worked but unfortunately the pole to operate them was missing the critical end which hooks both the blind and the vents. He went off to see if maintenance was still around and we never saw nor heard from him again. But as he was exiting I gave him the chain and pulley from a Roman blind, which was over the main 3 windows, and which had just been laid on the bed. Presumably also for maintenance.

So that left several Velux windows and a run of 3 linked windows all with inoperable blinds. But as all windows, including the bathroom, were too high to see out of - not a modesty problem! Just a fresh air problem as we couldn't open any Velux windows and of the set of 3 windows only one (all wood and advanced rot) would open and that just inches as the Roman blind got in the way!

Evening meal - very poor choice available on Mon and Tue evenings. Opted for the Club sandwich which was OK . My wife appeared to do better with the 'large plate' cod and chips. Until she discovered that the very large cod was 6" pure batter at one end with very little fish overall and the 'skin on' fries were virtually incinerated.

Back in the room - not a good night as light intruded owing to the absence of useable blinds - but mainly natural stuff as no street lights about. Next morning I discovered the shower is more of a hose as the head cannot be adjusted either for direction or spray.

Welcomed warmly to breakfast and, mainly business guests, but hardly busy. Asked if fried bread was available and confirmed they could despite it not being on the menu. Provided with a 'pot of coffee' which was excellent - but contained precisely one cup full! My wife fared similarly, with the continental breakfast, with only dregs of fresh fruit still left despite we were in the early stages of breakfast time and the waitresses hardly under pressure.

After 10 minutes my bacon and egg arrived but no fried bread - which was "imminent". By now being suspicious I decided to slowly eat the bacon / eggs whilst ordering a larger pot of coffee. The coffee was weak and nothing like the first cup - so obviously the same amount of coffee just with more water! The eggs and bacon were very good and the fried bread arrived some 5 minutes after I finished! Two full slices of bread. Which was not the '2 pieces' ordered and understood elsewhere to be one slice divided diagonally. I sent one slice back and then ignored the other one when, checking a corner as it looked odd, realised they'd used butter and it tasted horrible.

All in all a really rubbish stay from start to end and not worth a half of what we paid. I now realise the 'Deluxe' room is not on the montage of 'Deluxe' rooms advertised on their site. i wonder why.

Upon arriving we had to find our room, the reception was not busy it would have been nice to have been shown the room by staff.
We phoned reception asking for more shower gel (only one small bottle was supplied) but it did not arrive until an hour later, and only because my husband had to pick up our guests and reminded her.
I asked what tog rating was on the beds given that the night was warm, she had to investigate and returned saying it was 10.5 tog. Far too warm in summer! I asked was there an alternative and was offered a sheet and duvet cover which I used as it was far too warm to sleep under the duvet.
We also asked for more tissues as the container only had two left when we arrived. The young girl arrived at the door with another roll of toilet paper as she couldn’t find the tissues! Unbelievable…. And the hotel says it is luxury, offering an indulgent weekend away.
It’s also claims it’s independent and makes its own rules… clearly not caring for the customers.

After a tough day, and trip to the freeman, we booked here as a stop over for ease of access to the hospital (10 minute walk through a gorgeous park)
The receptionist was very friendly and accommodating, nothing seemed to much trouble. Even booking us a table in the restaurant when it was full (will get to that)
The rooms where well set out, comfy beds, warm, mini bar, under floor heating in the spacious bathroom, great water pressure. There was even a fan (although we found this noisy, so didn't use, which is more that I like no noise, rather than white noise), only little downside was the very small balcony had obviously been deemed unsafe, so was locked, which is understandle, but would have been nice to have the door open to some degree for the ambience.

The restaurant was fabulous, reasonably priced, good selection of food, and all nicely presented, tasted even better too.
The only very small annoyance for us, we have dietary requirements, and this wasn't asked at any stage of booking, food being ordered, until complimentary bread was brought to the table, I had assumed my husband had mentioned allergies at booking, so I am glad I double checked. Its possibly just an oversight on our table, or hopefully it's been picked up on. Other than that, the lovely new girl doing her shadow training was attentive, as where the restaurant manager and young waiting staff.

The coastal route north would be a lovely day out taking in Druridge Bay, Bamburgh, Holy Island (need to plan for the tides). If you’re interested in old battle sites then the Flodden site near Etal & Ford is worth a look for an hour. If you like gardens then Belsay Hall is a good morning out. Vindolanda is worth seeing as part of the Roman Wall. Kielder lake and surrounds and the ‘dark skies’ experience at Battlesteads should be on your list to consider although you should be aware that you need a cloudless night at Battlesteads to get the best out of the dark skies experience.
