Used to come in here when staying in the area. Sunday night was great - even as a non-local, was made to feel welcome, good music, delicious bar-snacks, great atmosphere. But what has happened???? Dead as a doornail on a Sunday? Sullen staff? Complete change to the bar menu that was ridiculously expensive. £4.50 for pork scratchings!!!!!!! A very nice...

I have been coming to Stratford since 1958 and stayed in numerous places, some for a number of years. Since the 1980’s I now come with my husband and this is the most convenient place for the theatre we have stayed in. We had a quiet room at the rear of the hotel which was spacious and included many little...

Been coming here for good few years and it had a bad spell a while back but is back to its previous good place. However it's a lot quieter than it was and appears to put eating ahead of drinking now. Just not enough seats or places to stand that isn't just a 'mass' in bar area. The 'back room'...

Hi Thank you for the review, reading this sounds like one of my business reviews!!! too quiet at times and then no where to sit anyone once they arrive, we are currently drawing up plans to see how we can increase the number of seats available both in the bar and teh back room, so watch out for the new...

Last time I moaned about a lot of things. The bad service, the poor cleaning, the lavatory that was a man-trap....the noise from the smokers outside our room........and the piles of files/paper in the reception. I am pleased to say they have , on the whole, pulled their socks up. The property has been sold, to , I believe, a...

A regular lunch venue when in Stratford Upon Avon. Great selection of well served gins is worth checking out. We had Cotswold gin garnished with pink grapefruit. Very well priced lunch menu with well presented and cooked fare including pressed ham hock and a mackerel starter. Chicken breast main course is succulent and the accompanying parmentier potatoes and iced gem...

Not sure what the negative reviews are all about! Stayed for one night to celebrate my partner's birthday. We were absolutely delighted with our room - huge comfy bed, fresh coffee, enormous bathroom, lovely fluffy towels. We had originally booked somewhere else for dinner but loved the atmosphere here so much we cancelled and ate at the Townhouse instead. The...

I’ve been a regular visitor to the Town house and always been impressed with the staff, service, atmosphere, especially on a Sunday evening. However our visit last week was pretty shocking, so much so that I created this account just to express my disappointment. It would seem that since the ownership change things have started to go downhill. Being that...

A busy bar and restaurant in the centre of Stratford. The bar was buzzing, lots of chatter and a pianist playing a varied selection of tunes. The wine, Pic Poul for me and a local beer, followed by a glass of Merlot for my partner were excellent. We ordered Crispy Whitebait from the "Small Plate" menu as a tapa, a...

Ok food with a nice friendly vibe, but nothing special here. Staff were friendly but service was a bit patchy at times. We were in on a Friday night so it was pretty busy, which might explain this. I might visit again if in town to give it another chance.

Lovely central hotel clean, with attentive staff and a very good breakfast in the morning. We had room three which having seen the other rooms are friends we're staying in was the best. Also a few nice touches like milk, water, and a couple of glasses of port. Even hair straighteners which if I had hair would have been lovely!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This independently owned boutique hotel is housed in a 400 year old listed building in the heart of Stratford upon Avon. Located opposite Shakespeare's school, among the ancient half-timbered buildings the town is famous for and only 2 minute's walk to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. This is THE place for a pre-theatre supper - local pianists play at 5.30pm daily and the atmosphere is great. The 12 funky en-suite bedrooms vary in size, cost and view. Try for a room at the front of the building for the perfect view. Great food is served all day, through till 10pm in this buzzy neighbourhood bistro with Afternoon Tea a particular favourite. Champagne Happy Hour is every Friday at 5pm and the bar is packed with a great, upmarket local crowd. The staff make the place and nothing is too much trouble. ... more   less
