We stayed for two nights at this guest house which was situated right on the sea front. We booked a double room with a sea view which was lovely but be sure to check first where your room is located not really suitable if you are elderly or have any health conditions as we were on the top floor what a climb especially with luggage no lift in this guest house we are both in our sixties fairly fit but found this quite hard to climb. Breakfast was served in your room due to regulations with Covid a Bacon Egg Sausage bap pot of tea which was quite nice.

A little gem. Alison was very welcoming & helpful. The overall decor & cleanliness is of a high standard. Breakfast was very good & was served efficiently in these Covid - 19 days. Loved our room overlooking the bay. So peaceful. Thank you!

We stayed just one night and are so pleased with our stay. We received a most friendly welcome and were upgraded to a seaview on the second floor. The room, although rather small, was clean, comfortable and airy, and well suited to our needs. An excellent shower with a high water pressure. Breakfast was served in the socially distancing set out with a choice of full English or continental. Very tasty and plenty on the plate. The staff were most accommodating. Ideal location on the seafront with easy, flat access along the promenade to the castle, harbour and town centre. Free car parking at rear. Good wifi. Highly recommended.

I stayed at the helmsman visiting family that were staying locally. Staff were very helpful and friendly. I had a single room with a private bathroom but the bathroom is outside the room. This was fine. I had a key for it so it still felt covid safe. The dining room was closed due to covid but the hotel provided a boxed breakfast to the room every day. You could choose a breakfast roll or continental you just needed to speak to someone at the start of the stay to agree what you were having. Staff wore a face covering to deliver this. They were clear about cleaning and although weren't servicing rooms daily due to covid, offered to change sheets / towels as and when required. I enjoyed my stay and would stay again. My only slight negative was that the room had a sash window and this was noisy when we had a storm. This could be solved by a small piece of wood that could be placed in the fastening if the window.

We had booked a two night stay via Booking.com in two "queen rooms" which were meant to be 19 square metres. However, room 11 on the third floor was tiny at nearly half this size and at the time after nicely pointing out our concerns to the management nothing was offered. Since leaving there and posting a review and complaining to booking.com the Helmsman offered a £5 refund! The room in question cost £170! So this was adding insult to injury with no remorse shown. If you have to book here avoid room 11! Also, check your room first before you pay on arrival!
