The Cardiff Sandringham Hotel is celebrated for its cleanliness and the warm, welcoming nature of its staff, who are frequently commended for their attentiveness. While guests appreciate the hotel's central location, making it convenient for exploring local attractions, some have mentioned noise disturbances during events. The atmosphere is friendly, yet the decor is often described as needing an update. Room comfort and cleanliness receive positive remarks, but the hotel's value is seen as inconsistent, with some reviewers pointing out that the amenities, although satisfactory, reflect the hotel's dated appearance.

A family of four of us checked into two rooms on Monday afternoon; the friendly reception staff were able to get us checked in early. Rooms were great - large, airy and a lovely bay window in one of them. Bathrooms were clean, as were the rooms.
Fab location! My father struggles to walk far so it was perfect for him - shops, bars etc all just a couple of minutes walk away.
We went to the Café Jazz next door one evening and the helpful barman let us know that we could have a discount because we were residents of the hotel. Food was fantastic and amazing value for money. We stayed for the jazz band who were great too.
An hour before we were due to check out on the third day, we decided to stay another night and the lovely staff were able to get us two new rooms! These were on the third floor and just as good.
Would recommend this hotel easily, the staff were all superb and we were really happy with all aspects of our stay. Pay no mind to the negative reviews, We’re already planning our next visit.

Booked with the hotel themselves and was given a very fair price. The hotel is a mere 5 to 10 minutes slow walk from the Central Train Station and is located very close to shops, bars, restaurants and Cardiff Castle.
There are sachets of tea/ coffee/ milk at reception to restock your room at will and you can take a clean bundle of towels from reception as often as you require them. The receptionists are friendly and helpful at all times and were happy to give advice on things to do.
It is worth being aware that there are no lifts at this hotel if you are hard of mobility, however my wife and I managed the stairs to a lower level room. The decor is a little outdated but the rooms are spotlessly clean and you are not paying 5 star prices.
Would happily recommend this hotel.

If you want something fancy then this is not for you. If you want somewhere really central slap in the middle of Cardiff, simple, really clean and with incredibly friendly and helpful staff and very affordable then this is the place to stay. We had a family stay here with 2 rooms with 2 young adults and parents. Great location for both nightlife, restaurants and the city's central attractions. Everywhere is walkable. Even though the hotel is right on a busy street we weren't bothered by noise.

As other reviews have commented yes the fabric of the interior is a bit tired and worn, but if like us you just want somewhere to sleep and shower (loads of very hot water) that is clean and comfortable without paying the earth then this really was a great find.

All the staff were genuinely very friendly and helpful, always with a chat when we passed by. Will definitely visit again.

We originally booked The Angel but when this popped up at over £200 cheaper, we booked this instead, paying in advance to secure the rate. They looked very similar but I’m wondering now if that’s the case.

The Sandringham is described as a ‘hidden gem’ in the heart of Cardiff. It is in the centre of Cardiff, above a cabaret bar.

The staff at the hotel are lovely and can’t do enough for you. The hotel itself is dated but as clean as it can be.

Room: the room (4) was facing the side street and had been smoked in, not just incessantly in the past, but recently. The window was wide open, a lot of air freshener had been sprayed and it was freezing cold. Although undoubtably clean, it was dingy, dated and stained. The shower screen was welded to the side of the bath, meaning you got wet turning it on. The shower head didn’t adjust and the water pressure was very poor - I bought dry shampoo as I never would have rinsed the soap out. The towels, which were a small ‘guest towel’ were not big enough to wrap around you and the loo roll, which was like what we had at school in the eighties, was in a plastic dispenser. My husband managed to open it but it was impossible to get any paper out. The carpet was grim and the curtains, nailed to the wall, didn’t close properly.

The first night we came back to the bar blaring into the early hours and then a car pulled into the street outside at 6am, playing music that literally shook the hotel for an hour. The second night we came back to a private function, complete with security guard and cigarette ends all over the internal entrance steps. The third night we called it quits and went home to stuff everything into the wash as it all smelled of stale cigarettes.

I maintain that this hotel is clean and the staff can’t do enough for you but it wasn’t for us, I’m afraid.

I am truly sorry that you have not enjoyed your stay. I agree a guest was found to have smoked in the room you stayed for the three nights previously. We were unaware of this until departure as he did not have his room serviced during his stay. We did our best but clearly not well enough. You found us helpful and friendly so I do feel we could have helped more if you had spoken to us. We could have moved you to a room at the back of the hotel for instance if noise was an issue on this particular weekend. Water pressure is not normally poor so I will get this looked at. I appreciate you will never return to us but I thank you for at least giving us a try. The hotel is clearly not for you. Kind regards, Simon and Alison

First of all, the location is wonderful in the heart of Cardiff. A plethora of restaurants awaits just outside the door, a small supermarket is almost next to the hotel and a bit larger one 2 minutes away.

The staff was super-friendly and always smiling.

My room was quite small. The bed was comfortable and I mostly slept well. One night a guy in the neighbouring room started cursing loudly at 4:30 AM about his miserable life and it was so loud that it woke me up. It was like he would be standing next to me. Also on both mornings of my stay the TV went on by itself at 7 AM.

There are some cons that might or might not affect you. I wasn't mostly affected, so I enjoyed my stay. However I think it's better to be aware of them before booking.

The property is very dated. It's like the hotels were in my childhood 30 years ago. Nevertheless it was clean, so it was still comfortable. Everything was just old and signs of wear and tear were clearly visible. There was no aircon, but as I was staying in the winter, it wasn't an issue.

There is no lift. The stairs are quite steep and narrow and there's a lot of them. I was travelling with only a small backpack, so again not an issue for me.

My room didn't face the street (and looked like most rooms don't), so I heard the street noise only distantly and it didn't disturb. The rooms facing the street seemed like a noise nightmare: the street is full of bars with loud guests and loud music playing throughout the night.

Thank you for your feedback. I am very pleased to read that you have mostly enjoyed your stay. We do have three compact single rooms which I agree are small. I apologise by the noise caused by a guest next door and the tv coming on. There is a phone in all rooms so you could have contacted us 24/7. We could have told the person to quieten down and someone had set the alarm on the tv which we have now removed. Street noise is mostly at the weekends but thankfully as you have written, you were not really affected by this. It was a pleasure to welcome you and it would be lovely to see you again in the future. Kind regards, Simon and Alison

Booked this directly with them wanted three rooms with twin beds and breakfast, all sorted on line , this hotel is classed as a two star but as we were out and about all day and night for my daughter’s birthday us ladies just wanted to be in the city centre to lay our heads , upon arrival greeted by a lovely lady on reception, yes there are steps and no lift so if you struggle then you might find this an issue, we arrived at 1.30 and before hand had email asking us what time were we expected to arrive ,if rooms were not ready they would keep our bags as we had a venue to attend at 2.45 , but two of the rooms were ready and we were all next door to each other as requested, but before we left at 2.15 the third room was ready ,yes the hotel is a bit dated but super clean ,tea ,coffee hair dryer lovely comfy beds and spotless clean ,.
Breakfast 🍳
Greeted by a lovely lady asking us do we want the full breakfast, yes please ,helped ourselves to orange juice, coffee, and toast and cereal there also , brought out to us within 5 minutes bacon, eggs, beans, hash browns, black pudding, tomato, sausage, absolutely divine, the friendly service in this hotel ticks all the boxes for the price you pay, I have stayed in many top hotels in Cardiff and paid double the price , but here you get the homely service you don’t get in the 5 star hotels .
Would I recommend this a place to stay for a night or two ,yes I would thank you for your hospitality.

I last stayed here in December 2016 , I thought as I had a night out in Cardiff and needed a place to stay I would try the hotel again. The staff are fine , no issues with them at all. In fact they are a credit to the establishment and the check in and out was really easy. The breakfast was nice enough and you can't fault the location at all, The room itself was small , the single bed in an alcove so not much space at all. The shower had little pressure and it took ages to warm up yo a decent temperature. It did it's job for one night and I only saw one room so I may be doing the hotel a disservice. I would stay again as it's convenience outweighs the negatives. There is no lift and a lot of stairs so be warned.

Hi Mike, Thank you for a very balanced review. I totally understand your comments. We have three single rooms in total and just one of them has the bed in an alcove. We try to ensure we price it correctly and the fact that you would stay again hopefully means we do. If booking again please request a larger room and we shall do our best to accommodate you. We have just came back from a 3 night stay and what a lovely gem this place is! The staff are so lovely, genuinely really nice people that can't do enough for you. I have no complaints about the room, everything was absolutely spotless, and we loved the little touches of the bottles of water in this heat, the biscuits, sachets of hot chocolate plus your coffee. I honestly don't understand the negative reviews but lucky enough the good far outweigh the bad. We would highly recommend this family run hotel and will be back soon to watch Paul Smith! Thank you again all and see you soon xx

I stayed here Friday night as I was attending a wedding. There was limited accommodation available in Cardiff city centre due to a few events being on and all the hotels I usually stay at were either fully booked or had tripled in price so I stayed here. I arrived at just gone 4 to drop my case off and freshen up as it was 35°! I was greeted by a lovely lady and directed to my room on the second floor. Yes the hotel isn't suitable for those with mobility issues, but this is clearly stated on sites as there is no lift. My room, linen and towels were spotlessly clean. Plenty of tea and coffee supplied and 2 bottles of water which was welcome because of the heat. There was also a fan in the room which you don't get in many hotels and again very welcome. I went to the reception returning at 1am and greeted by the night Watchman, another lovely member of staff who asked if I'd enjoyed the wedding and let me in a few time after while I popped out for cigarettes and chatted. I usually book a double room but none were available but the beds were 3/4 so plenty of room. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and I had a good night's sleep until 7am. I was woken by the property next door making an awful lot of noise for half an hour. Not the hotels fault and I believe they supply ear plugs if you ask, as I was at the back I didn't ask. After a lovely shower I packed up and went to check out. Check out, like check in was speedy with the same lovely lady who asked how the wedding had been. Left my bags there while I went shopping and picked them up a couple of hours later. I had a phone call after that as I'd left my spare phone in the room. Unfortunately I was on the way home but she arranged for my cousin to pick it up. I will definitely stay again. Cheaper than my usual hotels and just as close to the shops and pubs.

Mould was found all over the hotel room. In the corners of the bedroom, by the window and around the bathtub. The TV was faulty then the manager admitted he had no idea how to fix the tv. Then after changing it to a new tv he admitted the new tv in the room is not secure and could fall off the wall if touched. There is water stain marks down the wall of the bedroom and bathroom.

I am so sorry Dafydd that you have not enjoyed your stay or my service. I agree the TV was faulty and also that I could not fix it. It has been sent to a local engineer to see if a repair is possible. The new TV was fitted to the wall bracket but could be lifted off easily as I did not have the right tool to tighten the nuts on each side of the bracket. Perfectly safe it is just that if you wanted to you could have lifted it off the bracket and I obviously did not want you to do this. This was all done around 7.00pm and as quickly as possible and the last bit completed the next day. I am so sorry this has offended you so much and regret that you will not be retuning to my hotel. I thought I did my best and also offered you a different room but you declined it. Again I send you my sincerest apologies. Kind regards, Simon
