We visited over the New Year celebrations. This has been a regular stop over for us now for many years but sadly this will be the last. Don't get me wrong - the hotel and staff are wonderful and attentive. The sad thing is that the reputation for good food has taken a complete nose dive . The new menu is limited, uninspired and way over priced. We had to find alternative places to dine during our stay.
We stayed as a party of 8 - all big fans of The George for many years. That made it an obvious choice for a special birthday celebration. Having read the recent reviews we were a little concerned about the food but these were largely unfounded. The prices are comparable to other pubs & restaurants serving similar fare and our dinner was great with the exception of one vegetarian dish. The flatbread with hummus is not a main course worthy of a £14 price tag and should be removed from the menu immediately. Staff instantly took comments on board and replaced with the other vegetarian dish based on cauliflower. It was a standout dish that even had the carnivores digging in. The staff are fantastic and a real asset to the hotel. Sean is a real character with great customer service skills. Our breakfast waitress Kanisha was also a star. Breakfast was good but please do something about the coffee - a pot of very weak coffee won’t cut it with those who have partied hard the night before. Entertainment was an unexpected bonus and we had a great night. No reservations about recommending the hotel to others and we will undoubtedly return.…
Went for a meal, was a lovely atmosphere cosy pub feel with live music. However the food was not up to much. Prices are standard to pricey for a pub meal, however the quality for what you get is not worth the money. We got starters, burger & chicken escalope and was pretty disappointed with it all. Such a shame as it has great potential with a nice atmosphere and fantastic accommodating staff, I would suggest going for a drink rather than eating here.
Great stay in good rooms and top meal. Atmosphere amazing but probably better to lock that waiter up (Sean) cos it's way past his bedtime!! Just joking he was actually ok but his banter was rubbish (joking still).
Fantastic stay! Thanks so much for a great stay! The rooms are gorgeous , warm and very clean! We enjoyed a nice meal in the evening and shout out to Seanaldo our waiter who provided the 10/10 banter! We will definitely be back!
Love The George and have visited many times over the years. Rooms are great and hospitality even better! Food, atmosphere and staff are brilliant, especially Sean who made sure we had everything we wanted/needed and had the whole family in hysterics with his sense of humour, the best! Can’t wait to come back.
We stayed at the George for 3 days over New Year. Having stayed there numerous times before we had no issue with booking again. As per usual the staff were friendly and attentive and could not do any more to make us feel welcome. The rooms in the George are great. Apart from being spotlessly clean they are quirky and well thought out. Our shock (disappointment) however was the food. The menu was to say the least challenging and poorly conceived. I have genuinely never read a menu with such despair. The George has always had a reputation for good food. Why should the arrival of a new chef trample this reputation? That makes no sense?
Like some of the reviewers we also have been going to the George hotel over Christmas / New year EVERY YEAR FOR 12yrs … the food in the George was always great .. great choices great specials and nothing compared …. This year it was horrendous … same menu day in day out .. specials were put on at lunch so for dinner there was NO real choice ..I’m talking basic menus here !! We ordered steak which wasn’t rested like reviewer b4 said and at £32 you expect it to be better… ( it was a special) my wife had the fish which was lovely but again like previous reviewers the chips WERE FROZEN !! Not tasty at all . What has happened to this special place … !!!!! We had booked in for 3nights and we’re not happy at all .. it’s the very worst ever !!! . Can you please acknowledge the complaints as when we were there almost Everybody complained !!! Get back to basics and give your customers what they pay for as also the costing us way overboard !! We will pay happily for THE OLD GEORGE FABULOUS FOOD.. Bee Cee…
Fantastic place to stay, we had an amazing time staying for 2 nights. Combination of modern facilities in the room with traditional feel about it. We had a lively relaxing stay. Food was outstanding, relaxed atmosphere and helpful, friendly staff. Wr really couldn’t have asked for more. Room was very clean, huge bed very comfortable, cannot wait to visit again later this year
Had an evening meal at the George Hotel in early January. Ate in the bar area as the restaurant was full. Staff were friendly although not overly attentive. Food was good, little expensive. Nice pub atmosphere for a mid-week meal. Cosy environment in the pub/ bar area.
