#7 of 14 hotels in Oban
In a prime location, right in the centre of the curving esplanade, just a pleasant walk from the shops and harbour, stands Oban's Great Western; a hotel proud of offering space and comfort, as well as magnificent views of the bay (remember to look out for those memorable sunsets!). Ideal for a relaxing holiday, the activity on the bay can simply be watched from the welcoming lounge and cocktail bar, while it's also an ideal touring centre. With Glencoe, serene lochs and the Western Isles on the doorstep, there's a myriad of sightseeing opportunities. And with coast and country walks, angling, sailing, diving, bird-watching and a whole host of other leisure pursuits at hand, you should never be at a loss for something to do.

This hotel is very tired. It is in a great position on the waterfront in Oban but that is probably its only asset now. Cost through booking.com was very high at £108 per double room and £88 for a single the superior sea view room had a great view but whilst they had been updated they were hardly superior. Oh and no parking available so had to park in public car park just down the road. Breakfast was not included in the room price but available for £10 each extra. It took about 45 mins to receive our Scottish breakfasts which were ok but I have never seen such a small haggis, cruel to take them that young! All in all, I cannot recommend, many much nicer places to stay in Oban.

Let me start with the positives. The Bar staff were engaging and helpful. The hotel is well located on the edge of the central area. Now for the less good. The fabric of the building is tired and need of more investment than the revenue opportunity probably justifies. Doors and door jams in public areas are old, chipped, and bang. Some money has been spent in the bedroom we stayed in, however the investment is papering over what is a fundamental and old building that is way past it’s sell by date. I would also mention the parking arrangements which are face value appear to be chaotic, not thought through and seems to adversely differentiate against people booking through Booking.com. I don’t have the energy to explain about reserved signs in use that don’t need to be there for a bay to be reserved…. or that the pre-check in email asked for my reg number, but didn’t guarantee a parking slot…. it goes on and on. If you do stay at the hotel and have booked through Booking.com… beware!

Just returned from this Hotel, First impressions, In a nice position lots of steps to attack before you get to reception. check in ok. Our room was on the third floor with just one lift , because of distancing only two people at a time. The room was dated, tired looking, stained ceiling, needs total refurb, window jammed open, could not shut without calling staff. had to call to fix the shower, this was fixed very quickly. Dinner was nicer than expected, service was slow because not enough staff, what staff they had were very hard working and pleasant. Next morning Breakfast OK but a bit haphazard, That day the lift broke down, The young chap on reception was very good and allocated us another room on the first floor, this room fully refurbished, new Bathroom and shower, very clean, shower gel, shampoo, soap, ect .Obviously not one of the rooms allocated to Bus trips. The rest of the week meals ok, entertainment nice to see live act after a year. The staff were so nice a lot of money and time is needed on this place

The hotel was soulless, there was damp everywhere, paint and wall paper peeling off the walls, carpets worn. The rooms have cheap flat pack furniture in them, the view was good and that was about it. Our room had scuffs on the paintwork and a trough of water stagnant and mouldy as we looked out of the broken window which we had to wedge open. It is just run down there is no other way to put it. How the owners have the brass neck to let anyone through the doors is beyond me. We feel the price was ridiculous for the standard of the room, we booked through bookings.com and were told we had to go through them to complain when we went down to the hotels receptionist to ask how we could raise a complaint. As this was for a birthday we had to stay. I just don’t know how anyone can give this five stars. To anyone looking to book this hotel, please don’t look for somewhere else, Oban itself is nice with plenty of places for breakfast lunch and dinner, you will be disappointed and if you pay what we did you will feel scammed.

Booked via booking.com and this states that parking is available at the hotel and no reservation is required. Our engineers turned up to be told there was no parking available and there are only 22 spaces to 70 plus rooms!! We would NEVER have booked this accommodation if we had known this - reception short with our staff which was not welcome after a drive in excess of 12 hours. We will not be returning - luckily we could park our van at work premises nearby. We have Engineers working all around the country nationwide week in, week out and we would not chance our vans with all tools and materials to be parked outside of hotel premises. Beware - hotel not as advertised!

Response from Vicki Glen, General Manager at Great Western Hotel
Responded 1 week ago
Dear MidnightGuard, I am sorry to see you were disappointed with the service received at the hotel. As you state in your review we do have significantly lower parking facilities on site than we do bedrooms which does mean that we are unable to offer parking to all of our guests. Our parking is charged direct at the hotel and for the moment this is on a first come first served basis. Our booking sites give limited options for how we describe our parking offering with a choice of parking available or no parking available. Once our parking is full we always try to offer alternative suggestions which I know was the case with your engineers. Again I am sorry we did not meet your expectations on this occasion. Kind regards, Vicki Glen General Manager
