I lived in Oban for 6 years 30 years ago and the Royal was always poorly thought of. I honestly thought it would have improved but I was with a Group of holiday makers and was embarrassed as soon as we entered the Hotel. 18 of us arrived by train from Glasgow at 1345 and were immediately told our rooms wouldn't be available until 1500 hours. We were then a pushed into a filthy dark room and advised to go and find something to eat. When we eventually got to our room it was miniscule, dirty and cracked tiles in the bathroom were positively dangerous. This Hotel is filthy throughout and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. You would be better off going to the Premier Inn which is cheaper and cleaner.
Stayed in this hotel on the week of the worst winds, but did not dampen our spirits. Absolutely wonderful hotel, warm, very clean and such amazing views from our splendid room in what I called the turret. Have stayed in 3 other Strathmore hotels but the food in this one was exceptional and far superior to the others with friendly helpful staff. Thanks to Kimberly who served most of our tea, coffee and sweet treats which were simply delicious. There is a beautiful staircase, which was great to climb after all the scrumptious food !!
On the plus side - Friendly staff and nice breakfast, comfy clean mattress, lovely sea view (if you stand on a chair to see out of the window), great central location. On the negative side (and I don’t wish to be negative) - Filthy, dated hotel. See photos, although not fully representative. We stayed in the turret, room 206. The carpet was swathed in white dog hairs, clearly not seen a vacuum before the room was turned to us. It was dusty enough to write ‘clean me’ on the tv. The decor was dirty and dated and needs a good wipe down. The paintwork needs a good scrub with cream cleaner. The bathroom sink has paint all over it. It scrapes off with your fingernail - why not scrape it off then! Can hear next door flushing the toilet with the pipes clattering in the night! The sash window has a sign stating it is restricted, it isn’t, it opens fully - on the 5th floor! The other window is sealed shut with silicone. The room was very hot on our first night but there wasn’t a fan. When we left we pointed out all the good and the bad points to the receptionist who said she would tell the head housekeeper. It was over £300 for this scabby room for 2 nights, would we stay again - NO!…
The room was ok, certainly over priced All of the front desk staff I encountered were robotic, impersonal and lack customer focus. As I arrived they were dealing with a couple that had encountered problems with their room, they were very apologetic to the customers but as soon as the couple left the area, one of the receptionist pointed to the computer and said to the other “look at the rate they pay, and they still complain” - erm .... you had a new guest checking in that was paying a similar rate !!! Bit rude. On departure the lady receptionist was having a conversation with her male colleague- completely ignored me as I put my key down Oh, and wash your bedroom keys- they are filthy and we are in the middle of a global pandemic
We slept in the turret right at the top of the 5th Floor. For those that do not like a lift give this a miss. It was clean and the staff were great but the place is in need of some serious attention. The windows were too small and one was screwed shut. It was a warm day and just not air. The extraction system in the bathroom did not work. The lock on the door is a key (imagine that) and you actually have to put a key in the lock to lock it when you leave! That was funny. People claiming they were "members" kicking off in the bar because there were no booked seats for them gave the place a bad feeling so we left and found somewhere else to eat.
