Only a 1-night stay, so my experience may not be a true reflection. This is a much "newer" than its Grassmarket sister hotel. It is well located for shopping, Waverly Station (6 minute walk with luggage), and Calton Hill. Check in welcome was neither friendly nor unfriendly. My room was average European sizes, but well and comfortably appointed. Comfortable bed....

Me & my girlfriend stayed here for a short 2 night stay in Edinburgh, it's an excellent location not too far from anywhere. The royal mile is just over the bridge and new town and shopping is within easy access down princes street. Most of the city attractions and sights are very close making this an excellent choice for exploring...

Fantastic hotel with staff that go the extra mile - nothing is too much trouble for them and after telling them we had had to switch the date of our bookings and subsequently had to pay slightly more they offered us complementary breakfast which was lovely. The beds were very comfy and the rooms were particularly spacious with stylish and...

We stayed two nights in a deluxe double on the top floor. Room was spacious and nicely furnished. Picture window the length of one wall with view towards Leith. Lovely view but even on 10th floor there was a lot of outside noise on the Saturday night. Location was excellent two minutes from Waverley station and 20 seconds from Princes...

This hotel is in a great location and is in walking distance to Princes Street and the castle. The room was good but we never had a bath which I missed. Really liked the Elemis products that are in the room. We used the pool, sauna and steam room and the hotel bar, all were excellent. The staff in the...

Have stayed here before and really like it. Not the cheapest hotel but nice for getting around central Edinburgh. The spa/swimming pool is nice and it has a Steam room and sauna , the only thing it need is a Jacuzzi, it has some cold jets in the swimming pool but it's not quite the same. the rooms are nice...

Fabulous location - all Old Town and New Town places of interest are totally walkable from hotel. We were on an extended ( 2 plus week) stay and can only rave about the staff. Our room was satisfactory - I thought a little small for a deluxe king city view - but was very clean, with nice amenities and a...

Stayed 3 nights and were given a complimentary upgrade to a suite on arrival as there were 3 of us sharing. The room was gorgeous with all the luxuries you would expect, including beautiful Elemis products. Visited the spa which was lovely and offered very reasonably priced treatments. We didn't eat in the hotel but had several cocktails which were...

Lovely modern clean hotel, really central location and superb breakfast. Shame we couldn't get a table for evening meal but went to the italians on the corner which was great value for money and fab desserts. Room was at the side of the hotel 401really noisy could hear drunks people shouting singing and taxis dropping off. Room a little chilli...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
