I stayed here for a night on a dinner bed and breakfast package. The reception staff were welcoming and we were allocated a very nice room. It is a lovely building in a very central location. Dinner was an experience, and not in a good way. The food was alright, but no more than that. However the service was atrocious....

Absolutely fantastic hotel in the heart of Edinburgh's old town. Just a five minute walk to Princes Street for shopping and ten minutes to the castle and other sight seeing spots. Location 5/5 We were treated very well from the moment we entered the hotel. The hotel is quirky in that each room is named after a wine and so...

We stayed arriving on new years eve eve, until the Monday so 3 nights in all. We arrived in very good spirits, but were soon woken up to reality. We were told on arrival that we only have booked for one night despite a confirmation for 3 nights. We were told there were no rooms for new years eve. Panic...

My husband and I loved this hotel. We stayed for a week during Hogmanay. We were in the Mouton-Rothchilde room and the room was absolutely amazing. The decor was very pleasing, the mattress the best we've ever slept on, the pillows just perfect plumpness for cradling our heads, the free-standing tub just large enough for the two of us, the...

Booked a very last minute room in the hotel du vin for a really good price. The entrance and the decor is really tasteful and done to a very high standard. Something about it felt homely. The staff were charming. The room was one of the cheapest rooms but in no way did it seem it (I would like to...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
