Stayed here for one nigth in a standard room - room was pretty small but had a very comfy bed, a safe, tea/coffee making facilities and a HD TV with satellite channels. The bathroom was stocked full of toiletries and there was a waterfall shower. Location is perfect for the Royal Mile. At £179 per night for a standard room,...

We stayed one night in the Willi Opitz room. It was beautifully decorated and fitted out. Full height windows with heavy tweed curtains, double bed, large lcd TV, modern bathroom with a waterfall shower. The bar was really nice too, big comfy sofas. Bar staff chatty but not intrusive. I loved the cigar bothy even though I don't smoke!! Great...

Superb overnight stay to take in the amazing Slava's Snow Show at Festival Theatre. Took standby upgrade option and got wonderful Dom Perignon room at substantial saving. Bistro meal comprised Shetland scallops and a shared chateaubriand. The dining room has a great atmosphere and the meal was excellent, the flavour and cooking of the food was second to none but...

We had a midday flight from EDI and rather than travel up from Yorkshire to Scotland on the morning of the flight we decided to take it easy, travel up by train and spend the night in Edinburgh prior to flying out. The Hotel du Vin fitted the bill perfectly. We booked a special offer for Sunday night which gave...

This hotel exceeded my expectations for what a Scottish holiday could be during the Christmas market season. Exceptional service, a peaceful and clean room with all the amenities, and a fabulous restaurant staff. Every request or question was me with an inventive and enthusiastic attitude and a smile. We had a night in Edinburgh and stayed here again. As always excellent room standard - warm, clean, well-appointed etc. Very comfortable; we had a very good night’s sleep. Not the best location if you are intent on just hitting the shops in the New Town. Nevertheless we would highly recommend.

Needless to say we love Hotel du Vin as a brand and have stayed in a few HdV's. This was our third stay at the Edinburgh HdV and it was great - as always. The rooms we had were well positioned, and had everything you'd expect. I love the Nespresso coffee machines. Such a nice touch. I had worked a...

My wife and I recently found ourselves needing to be in Edinburgh for a wedding. Having frequented Hotel Du Vin's previously in Brighton, Tunbridge Wells and Winchester, it seemed a natural choice to stay in the Edinburgh HDV too. However, the hotel really is out of kilter with the other hotels. For starters, the rooms are small. I know it's...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
