Booked for dinner, arrived and seated, provided with menus, which we perused with great interest , we made our decisions and made our order, ONLY then to be told that one of our chosen starters was not available!! Made a second choice and waited , 25 mins later a waiter arrived to say that one of the ingredients for second...

The pub is full of history and cozy and clean inside. The food was great - roasted salmon. There is even a skittles room which is great fun! It wasn't touristy as there seemed to be quite a few locals.

My husband and I had the valentines meal here. 3 courses and a glass of fizz for 27 pound. Food was very very good , dessert was amazing - chocolate sphere hiding a scoop of ice cream all lying on a bed of popping candy then waiter poured hot caramel sauce onto sphere which gradually melted into a delicious gooey...

Hadn't eaten here for years, and we were meeting some friends for lunch. We received a nice warm welcome and our drinks order was taken quickly while we perused the menu. There was a good range of dishes, and we all chose the Sunday roasts - 4 lamb and 2 beef. The food was wonderful. A large helping of roast...

Christmas Eve dinner. Starters were lovely but mains were really mixed. Burgers and steaks were very good but Pork and Fish overcooked and mash was really dreadful, how can you mess up mashed potatoes? Usually brilliant but on this occasion very disappointing.

Poor quality , taste and temperature. Lunch service took 1.5 hours ... and still below standard. Manager tried to resolve issues. Unfortunately it's an old inn and was pretty chilly which added to our disappointing PRE CHRiSTMAS outing!!! Can ' chains' provide good , tasty food ?? Time is special and sacred. This meal was neither !!!!

Family of 4, dinner dec 2016. Great old historical hotel, well renovated and clean. Ample car parking at rear. Good selection of main menu and desserts. All our meals were excellent. In a quieter part of Edinburgh. Old 10 pin alley at rear of hotel - which we were able to knock down a few skittles after dinner. If in...

We were seated upstairs in the restaurant which was clean warm and well presented for our lunch. The room was in keeping with that of a quaint old pub. The service was attentive and well timed with appropriate breaks in between courses.we had the festive menu(a party of 11) priced at £20.95..this was excellent value for money for 3courses.I can recommend...

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
