I've passed this hotel many, many times. It looks a bit tired, decayed and forgotten from the outside (especially from the side) but don't judge this book by its cover.... Overnight stay. Frequent guest with Hilton. (Hilton Honours) Warm welcome at reception, staff very efficient and we were even escorted up to our room. Lifts a little small and tired,...

The rooms are small but well appointed. I would guess that the rooms facing the castle have a good view but mine looked at equipment and an interior courtyard. Breakfast was good. Check in process left a lot to be desired. Hilton really should look at their competitors for front of house service.

Have just spent a lovely 2 days here for my birthday. The hotel is beautiful, clean and bright with very pleasant and welcoming staff. Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
