I've stayed at the Caledonian several times in the past. The rooms are lovely - spacious, comfortable and well appointed. However a I was surprised on a few fronts this visit. They no longer offer Hilton Gold members complementary breakfast (discounted rate instead) which is very disappointing since the price for the breakfast on top of the room becomes not...

We had a marvelous time enjoying the beauty, elegance and attentive service at the Waldorf Astoria Caledonian in Edinburgh. The rooms have lovely views of the castle lit at night, the Brasserie Galvin is a wonderful experience and it is very convenient to the Holiday Market, the high street and all the things to see and do, as well as...

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 nights (24th & 25th Nov.) in celebration of our wedding anniversary. On the whole we enjoyed our stay but felt that, given the expense of staying here, something was definitely lacking. To be more specific, there appeared - if equated to a person - to be a meaness of spirit...

Stayed here for one night on 26 November 2016 for our anniversary. Extremely disappointed with the view of a car park, for the price we paid. The room was small and we think that had it been decorated a lighter colour than black it may have made the room seem bigger. A lesson learnt here I'm afraid. Stayed at a...

Dear guest, Thank you for your recent patronage and for taking the time to share your feedback. In addition, many congratulations on your anniversary. I am disappointed to learn of your dissatisfaction in regards to your room. Our Queen Carriage rooms, which I believe was the category in which you stayed judging by your description, are decorated in the style...

Great location at the end of Princes St, beautiful room and friendly staff but service was quite poor for this standard of hotel. We stayed for 2 nights and the hotel appeared to be understaffed, particularly at breakfast time. On both mornings a number of staff apologized to us for the poor service and there were also limited staff available...

Our stay was amazing from the moment we arrived until we departed. This hotel is on point with quality service in every single area. Just perfection!. The location is ideal as it's in the middle of everything, so we had options for night life and entertainment etc. This was a great experience and would recommend to everyone!

I still think of this hotel as The Caledonian. As such it's an Edinburgh institution. Its an upmarket luxury hotel at the top end of Princess street. There's not much you can fault with the hotel. They could improve breakfast with a fresh egg station rather than only over-cooked fried eggs. Maybe a minor fault but if they want to...

Luxury amenities at a mid-range price. Great lobby and bar areas. Helpful staff, good size rooms and a great location! I regularly use Peacock Alley for business meetings or drinks with friends. A beautiful room with enough privacy at tables for private discussions. Best place in Edinburgh for afternoon tea; tea selection is fantastic!

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
