Overall had a great stay. Booking system needs overhaul as could not cope with an extra night added on and so caused some confusion . Information for spa difficult to find online. Plan of hotel would help find way around. Both restaurant and Brasserie were excellent with efficient friendly staff and great food. Bar service slow with staff needing training... More

I stayed at this hotel for one night and first of all there is nothing to justify the price tag of 500 Euro without breakfast but my main concern with the hotel is the attitude of the staff. We (my 67 year old mother and I) arrived late in the evening and the guy standing by the door didn't move... More

A view of the Castle right outside the door awaits you. Locals know this hotel as the "Calley". Updated but rooms are on the small side. Guests can definitely see the remnants of the former railway station that this hotel was built on. Wifi was a bit unrealiable.

This hotel is central for everything you want to do in Edinburgh. The Hotel reception was beautiful. Staff were friendly & pleasant. Bedroom was tastefully decorated although slightly on the small size. Bed and pillows were comfortable which is a plus but there was no bath in the bathroom. In fact the room was so small, it consisted of a... More

The Cally, as the Caladinian is know as by the locals, is centrally located in easy walking distance between Old Town & New Town. We had the most beautiful room I think we have ever had in any hotel in Europe. The room was large & the staff was friendly and attentive.

This was a real treat for us staying at the Caledonian. Thanks to our Hilton Club membership, our massive 3 room suite for 3 nights was free. The really good thing was, we walked into the hotel looking like backpackers & no-one batted an eye. With packs slung over our shoulders, we were politely greeted & welcomed to the hotel.... More

First, the exterior of the hotel is very picturesque. Inside you can see a lot of work done to update and bring it into the 21st century. It still maintains the character of the old Caledonian. The room we had was excellent. It had a view of the castle, high ceiling, and enough room so it didn't feel cramped. The... More

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
