Having stayed at the other popular 5 star hotel opposite The Scotsman, I had a check list of what a 5 star hotel should be. Excellent customer services, spotless rooms, full of those special touches you expect when paying 5 star prices. The excellent customer service was there in the form of the concierge who took our bags up on...

A friend of ours booked us a night stay in The Scotsman Hotel as a wedding gift and we decided to take a trip up there for my 30th birthday this weekend gone. I was aware of the price and was expecting great things, however, we were immediately let down by the parking and the concierge's description of how to...

Thank you for taking the time to record your comments regarding your recent stay with us at The Scotsman. Our concierge are always up to date of roadwork’s in Edinburgh so they will then be aware of which routes are best to reach the car park. I am sorry to hear it seems we have failed with this. My Wife and I were in Edinburgh for our Son's Graduation. We stayed 3 nights at "The Scotsman"......such a wonderful old building, ideally located next to Waverley Station.......within easy walking distance of Princes Street, Royal Mile and the Castle. Originally home to "The Scotsman"....Scotland's national newspaper........opened as a hotel in 2001. Many original features remain......the galleried former Reception Hall is...

I had initially booked our room here as a hold over in the city before our flight the next morning, but I was so impressed with the place, that I really would have enjoyed staying a bit longer, and look forward to staying again in the future. The location is absolutely perfect and within easy walking distance of all the...

This hotel is absolutely wonderful. Our plane arrived very early and our room was not ready and as my friend was sick with a cold they did everything in their power to make us comfortable. Wonderful Location between Old and New Town, Station nearby. Wonderful historical building with magnificent Dining room. Staff very helpful and polite, fast to respond. Free Wi-Fi, a bit slow, but working. Some issues are just difficult to understand, such as: -the only chest was a simple, open steel-structure, veiled with a transparent white cloth- very unusual for a Hotel of...

We stayed in what was defined as a Deluxe Queen bedroom (609) measuring 34 sq metres and with a view of the city. In fact, it was a tired room: the carpet needed replacing - it was badly ruffled and worn and always looked uncleaned; and the ugly black, scuffed doors of the wardrobe and tv and drinks cabinet -...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Scotsman Hotel, resides within the former Scotsman Newspaper building. Originally built in 1905, this majestic building was designed to dominate the Edinburgh skyline and features incredible views of the city´s most famous landmarks. In 2001 the building was transformed into The Scotsman Hotel with careful attention towards preserving the magnificent Italian marble staircase, stunning oak panelling, imposing marble pillars and ornate ceilings.Originally the reception room of the newspaper, our North Bridge Bar and Brasserie features the original oak panelling, a hand carved wooden balcony and imposing marble pillars. The seating area is split into two levels with the balcony offering quieter, intimate seating, with a birds-eye-view below to the buzzing main restaurant and cocktail bar.The newspaper held its giant printing presses in the lower ground floor. The press room now houses our Scotsman Health Club and Spa with a vast state of the art gym. Popular with locals and hotel guests alike. Facilities include a steel swimming pool, steam and sauna, tropicarium, 60-station gym, spa treatment rooms and a relaxation suite. With no two alike, our 69 rooms and suites each have their own quirky features including curved corner window bays with breathtaking views and marble bathrooms and as a guest at The luxury 5 star Scotsman you will enjoy free Wi-Fi access and a complimentary Scotsman Newspaper. ... more   less
