I recently stayed at the Scotsman in Edinburgh, and was impressed with the quality of the staff and the location. There is truly no better location if you are traveling by train than the Scotsman, you can reach Waverly station by going to the ground floor by elevator and crossing the street. The pool and spa were quite nice and...

I stayed the last week of August, at the end of the Fringe festival. Every morning I woke up to this incredible, floor-to-ceiling view of the city. The weather was absolutely gorgeous that week, so the view was astounding, from Calton Hill on the right with a tiny glimpse out the left side to Edinburgh Castle (but you really have...

We first visited this hotel 10 years ago for our wedding anniversary. We decided to revisit for our 20th anniversary and loved it just as much this time! Great location, and very attentive staff. Although sometimes a little too attentive, but I'm sure the balance is very difficult to get right. There was only one thing I was disappointed in...

It's been a few years since I've visited the hotel, but it was so amazing that I've got to write a review for you. Was there just after New Years. The staff was absolutely amazing, the room was comfy and cool, the location can't be beat! Since it was off-season, there weren't very many tours running. None of what I...

From check in to check out 3 days later, we enjoyed our stay at The Scotsman, a convert from the original Scotsman newspaper building to a hotel. The outer structure therefore is historic, the location us centeal, and the hotel is relatively new. The staff were warm, courtious, very helpful and just plain friendly. The facilities were fine with slight...

We stayed here for 3 nights during the Edinburgh Fringe festival and we couldn't have been happier with the location. it is in the centre of everything, 2 minutes walk from the train station, or if you drive as we did then you get a discount at the NCP car park 5 minutes away. The staff were helpful and polite,...

We cannot say enough good things about the staff at the Scotsman. Every person we encountered was friendly, helpful and welcoming, especially Abandnour. Even with the windows open it was...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
