Me and my fiancé came to stay at this hotel for the night and at first glance didn't know what to make of it. We stopped off at the bar first and sat right next to the window that looked out onto the busy streets of Edinburgh and Edinburgh castle. First things first, the windows are in need of a...

Hotel was excellent, our room (566) was clean, comfortable, warm and very spacious. Tea & coffee facilities, bathrobes, hairdryer and toiletries. From the start to the finish all the staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Central location was perfect, and the views are amazing. The best part of our stay was definitely dinner which was excellent and piping hot a real contrast to breakfast in which the buffet items were at best luke warm and some really quite cold. We had a very comfortable night but it was quite noisy with the revellers and the early morning delivery to Marks and Spencer's which is...

The Mercure - used to be called the Mount Royal and confusingly some of the old signage is still on the outside of the building - is a bit of a mixed bag. Our 5th floor room was nicely decorated and had a spectacular view of the Old Town. Let down by dated bathroom. Breakfast was pretty good, but again...

I stayed for 2 nights on a business trip. For that, the hotel was great: as central as it gets, easy to find, without any queues at the reception. The rooms were fully functional and even though I had a 3rd storey room facing the Princess street, not too noisy. Despite basic heating controls, Gertrude, the storm, and a particularly...

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
