The food itself is nice. However you pick what filling you want in you sandwich. I prefer how other afternoon teas give you a selection of different sandwiches. Views of castle are nice. But the restaurant is quite shabby and dated. Service was really slow/poor. Had to ask twice for more milk. I had coffee with my afternoon tea. It...

Stayed 1 night 30th April and everything was just fantastic. Thank you to Martyn who checked us in at reception and looked after us. She was great. The views were amazing over Princes St. Although the room was small, everything else made up for it but in any case it wasn't an issue as we were out n about sightseeing...

A mixed response to this hotel. Good points being its location. Ideally situated on Princes Street, 2 mins walk from Waverley Station. Our bedroom on the front overlooking Princes Gardens. Other than that it's not got a lot going for it. Badly in need of a refurbishment. The lounge/bar restaurant area seating was in need of a good cleaning. The...

The afternoon tea was nice, fresh and almost indulgent. You get to choose 3 varieties of sandwich from cheese, cheese and tomato, ham or tuna mayo. Then you get three rectangles of each kind served on bottom tier. Top tier has 2 fruit scones with jam and cream. Middle tier had two mini strawberry tarts, 2 mini brownies, 2 almond...

Stayed here on business. It's a canny little hike from Edinburgh Waverley with a suitcase (20-25 minutes depending on time of day and walking speed). You do get the opportunity to walk past Edinburgh castle though so that's a bonus. The reception is bright and airy with the restaurant to your immediate right and lifts to the left. The reception...

Stayed on 5th floor at front for 5 nights late April. Positives: Excellent location; helpful & friendly staff. Negatives: 1. Understandably noisy street outside but as rooms so hot one either had to suffer the noise or be uncomfortably hot in bed (as no AC and usual thick hotel duvet ). (Although there was an electric fan this is of...

The hotel is overall good. Nothing stands out in either a negative or positive way, except maybe for the view in the breakfast hall, which is beautiful. You get exactly what you expect from Mercure, and for that you pay maybe slightly above average.

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
