Kildonan Lodge Hotel presents a mix of impressions among guests. The hotel's cleanliness generally meets expectations, with well-maintained rooms, although there are suggestions for minor enhancements. While the atmosphere varies from quaint and cozy to somewhat dated, the hotel's location is consistently lauded for its convenience to Edinburgh and good transport links. Amenities like free parking and diverse breakfast choices are appreciated, yet some guests feel that the overall value doesn't match the pricing. Room conditions seem to fluctuate, with some needing attention. The staff, on the whole, are commended for their warm and efficient service, despite occasional lapses.

While The Kildonan Lodge Hotel could sure use some TLC around its “scruffy bits”, it would be unfair to judge harshly against its warm charm and hospitality. This is measured by the friendly welcome as you arrive, the brief tour of amenities, an explanation of what’s what and how they work, and the complimentary water, biscuits and sherry in your room. We didn’t sample the sherry, but liked that it sat there in the first place. The biscuits and water were topped up on each of the two days/nights we stayed.

Parking was free, though navigating a path into the busy traffic was challenging at peak times. We took a bus one night, which was swift into and out of the city for about £1.50 each, and bus stops were close to the Lodge. The car park itself was a little tight, but doable. There are no charging points yet. Access to the Lodge from the car park was easy, with a back door for guests. If you stay in any of the downstairs rooms, be prepared to hear those noisy doors from time to time, which would benefit from being soft-closing types. There were free masks, bags and sanitisers in the communal areas.

Recharging after a day in Edinburgh can be achieved courtesy of a spacious room, a big bed, a powerful shower (over bath), and a reasonable TV. Power points for devices are mostly on one side of the bed (USB hub), while sockets are at floor level on the other side of the room. We didn’t use the WiFi, as it wasn’t secured with a password, but phone signal wasn’t too bad for checking messages and emails. Upstairs is a lovely, peaceful room with a fireplace and honesty bar. We didn’t use it, but there was a range of wine, spirits and soft drinks available. Likewise, there are board games, books and other things to help pass the time, relax and unwind.

Breakfast began at 8am, which is later than we’re used to. A range of goodies awaits such as Scottish breakfast, cereals, tea, coffee, juice, and so on. I’m not convinced my porridge was homemade, but I enjoyed it all the same. You feel you could ask for something and the lovely people who run the Lodge would do their best to make you happy. That’s something worth paying for, and which remains an elusive concept for many other hotels. This is a four-star worth four stars.

Myself & my wife previously stayed in this hotel for a short break in August 2019, so it was an easy decision to stay again when we needed to choose somewhere for an overnight stay when coming to Edinburgh to apply for a Russian tourist visa.
Even though the hotel is on a road which leads straight into the city centre, it is far enough away to feel a quiet location, whilst being close enough to be able to get to centre in a short journey. Buses stop close to the property every 5-10 minutes making it very convenient to get to city centre within 15 minutes at relatively low cost and without having the hassle or cost of parking (we left car at the private car park at rear of hotel (which has ample parking spaces for hotel visitors).
The staff at the hotel are friendly and provide a polite and efficient service. First hotel I stayed in which have an honesty bar/lounge where you serve yourself drinks and snacks and trust you to record this yourself for adding to your bill (we never used on this occassion but we did during our previous stay).
The rooms at the hotel are clean, have character and are well proportioned.
The cooked breakfast was very good with quality ingredients used (e.g. sausage, bacon, haggis, black pudding).
We for sure will be staying here again for any future overnight stays in Edinburgh and would recommend to anyone going to Edinburgh for business or pleasure.

Having been previously shielded in the Covid crisis, I chose this hotel for its five star cleanliness and comfort ratings and it did not disappoint.! It was very clean with a good disinfectant regime, prominent hand sanitiser stations throughout, social distance markings in the foyer and a mask-wearing policy in all public areas.
The manager was very helpful, pleasant and welcoming and service was excellent. Our room was large and very comfortable and en-suite facilities were sparkling.
I would definitely stay at this hotel again and thoroughly recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

Booked as a couple for a nice weekend in Edinburgh.
Tempted by the lovely photos of the rooms . We contemplated booking the four poster but decided the executive double looked just fine .
How disappointing when we arrived. We were put in room 4 which is a basement room with limited light low ceilings and poor furniture. The main dining room was above and you could hear every footstep.
The wardrobe back was broken off and so when you opened wardrobe it just leaned to the side.
It may have been ok as a standard room but certainly not the quality we were expecting. It did have a new en-suite which was nice.
We complained but couldn’t get moved to another room as hotel was full and so was offered a small discount but by then the ‘experience’ was spoiled.
Other issue was that reading the reviews beforehand it was mentioned that they had catered for a vegan breakfast and so as my wife was Vegan we requested this on the booking form only to be told on arrival WE should have called ahead and arranged.
Good location good parking friendly staff . I don’t like complaining when the hospitality industry has suffered so much but the hotel should be clear on what they are offering.
I’m sure some of the other rooms are lovely and if we had been in one I wouldn’t leave an average review!
I would just suggest to the hotel making everything ( furniture decorating etc ) in room 4 better than it was to try and compensate for its location and don’t market it as an executive double ( which apparently was because it had a bigger bed )
We won’t risk returning

We stayed at this hotel when we had a long weekend in Edinburgh and we had a great stay there. As it had only just opened up the COVID measures in place were good, masks throng worn, even the own to fill in our form to check in was sealed in plastic for just us to use. We were given an upgrade to a four poster bed when we arrived which was lovely and were told that we could get a complimentary drink in their honesty bar as they normally offer sherry and biscuits but this was on hold because of COVID.
The manager was called Sean and he did a fantastic job, we could not have asked for more from him, he was so friendly and helpful. We had breakfast each morning, my husband had full breakfast and I had continental, both were very tasty, very fresh and served quickly by Sean.
The hotel is very very nice, I can only say one little thing, that some areas could just do with a little fresh paint, but that did not affect our stay and we would return. There were lots of buses that ran just outside which took you straight to Edinburgh in a couple Of minutes. So handy for sightseeing and getting bs k if an evening.
So thanks Sean for a great stay!

We arranged an annual meet up with friends at the Cildonan Lodge in Edinburgh. The hotel was easily found on it's street location by satnav. There was adequate free parking behind the house. Our car remained in the car park for the remaining three days as the local buses were plentiful with stops right outside the hotel.

We entered the hotel - a substantial Victorian house. We knew immediately that this was a great choice. Reception on our arrival was manned by a lovely Canadian gentleman who was excellent = welcoming and informative.
There was a very tastefully decorated and very comfortable lounge with an open fire and honesty bar for our use and a lovely dining room across the hall. We immediately decided to eat in that evening and we enjoyed a lovely, homely, relaxing evening in lovely surroundings.

Our room was also lovely and it was clear that no expense had been spared on fittings, furniture and decor.

This is a lovely convenient quality place to stay if you are visiting Edinburgh. It’s a secret you don’t really want to share.

A very comfortable hotel. The lounge was welcoming with a fire going, bar and most comfortable chairs.
The bedroom was superb. Original four poster. Complimentary Sherry and biscuits tea coffee hot chocolate. Immaculately clean. Breakfast was first class with so much choice. All the staff we met were most helpful and friendly.
Easy access to the centre of Edinburgh with bus stops just a few minutes away.
A little tip. Contact the hotel direct to book your room, we booked on line with Booking .com and found it would have been cheaper to book direct with the hotel.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at kildonan lodge, every detail was tended to with such care and we would recommended to anyone! We received an exceptionally warm welcome and was even able to check in early which was very much appreciated after a 5 hour journey. All members of staff were so friendly and happy to help with anything at all, whether it be recommendations or information about the town. The breakfast was very tasty with a great selection which was served in the most beautiful dining room. The lounge area was absolutely gorgeous with the open fires and the honesty bar is a welcomed extra after a long day exploring. The location was just great with very easy access to the town centre whether it be by bus, Uber or even a brisk walk. The large car park allows you to leave your car and explore with ease. During our stay the weather was extremely cold but the hotel made sure our rooms were kept warm and comfortable throughout our stay. The room was very clean with great beds and we really appreciated the room facilities made available to us. Thank you all so much for a fantastic stay overall and for making our first trip to Edinburgh a most memorable one. We will most definitely be back soon!

We stayed here for 3 nights in September. Chrystal was really helpful from booking to check out, nothing was too much trouble. She provided lots of information that helped make our stay perfect and was always ready to answer our many questions, as this was our first stay in the city. We stayed in the Lodge room L2 which is on the first floor, very comfortable and quiet (it's set back from the main road) with everything you need. There's free parking on site and we didnt use the car during our stay using the very frequent bus service which is a few minutes walk from the hotel. You can get a daily bus ticket for £4.50 each which is great if you want to go back to the city later for dinner. There are also places to eat nearby and Chrystal provided a map with the locations. It's a bit of a hike into the city; we walked down the main road and turned off to walk through Holyroodhouse Park and down to the Palace, following Chrystal's suggested route, (sadly closed following the Queen's death, we went to visit the garden with floral tributes next to the palace). We packed a lot into our 3 night stay and really enjoyed it so hope to return. Breakfast was very good and is taken in the main house which is full of character. There is a good choice and it is well cooked and presented. Recommend the omelette!

Had driven past Kildonan Lodge many times and always wanted to stay, so when the opportunity arose recently, we took it. Our welcome was warm and friendly, and the free parking is an absolute boon in Edinburgh, which is reported to have the most assiduous traffic wardens in the UK. Due to Covid we were not able to have the welcome sherry or honesty bar advertised on the website.

We had a room on the lower ground floor. All was clean and tidy, albeit characterless, but the bed was not comfortable. Again, Covid-19 dictated that we had to preorder breakfast, at a preordained time. Breakfast was good.

In all, a reasonable stay, but disappointing nonetheless. The outside looks lovely, but sadly the interior does not really live up to the exterior appearance. The decor in the dining room is a 1980s throwback, and could be so much more. However, I fully appreciate the huge toll that Covid-19 has taken on the hospitality industry, and the cost of refurbishment probably not an option.
