Me and my wife had our first wedding anniversary in Edinburgh and we stayed at the Principle, the staff made our stay even more special, they were fantastic from start to finish and the hotel itself is beautiful. The location is great location close to restaurants, shops and lots of bars. I would 100% recommend staying here. We will definitely...

Formerly The George Hotel, it has been extensively refurbished. It is in the city centre, just 10 minutes walk from Waverley Station, and handy for many upmarket shops. My room was clean, tastfully furnished and well appointed. Top notch complimentary toiletries in the bathroom, and good fluffy towels. Rather thin walls, so I heard too much of my neighbours. The...

Dear Marion, Thank you for sharing your review following your recent stay with us at the Principal Edinburgh. We do have a fantastic location within the city centre, making the ideal place to base yourself whilst touring Edinburgh. I was disappointed to learn that your experience at breakfast was not as you had expected. We have taken your points on...

We had a fairly small but very comfortable room in the Principal. The staff were unusually helpful in general. We enjoyed the breakfasts and the bar, but have to say that the coffee at breakfast was really not good - go for the tea!

Stayed for my daughters 21st birthday, what a wonderful hotel and very helpful friendly staff. Was easy to get to many places in the city and staff were very informative on places in the area and how to get to them. My husband and I stayed here while on our 'mini moon'. As soon as we arrived our bags were taken care of, we had our room upgraded, there were chocolates sent to our room and we received two free drinks tokens for the bar. The staff couldnt have possible done anymore for us. The rooms are lovely and clean, and...

Stayed over for two nights with my wife on a short break. The hotel has just had a refit and the rooms have all been finished to a high standard. The breakfast was excellent and the all round service was even better. We usually stay at the Hilton but Im afraid we wont be back after seeing how customers should...

Whilst there were things we liked about our stay, there were too many 'could do betters' to make this a positive review, especially given the pricing point of the hotel. On the plus side, the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was pleasant with quality duvet, pillows and linens, although the double bed was rather small. The location is...

Dear Basilbig, Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience with us at Principal Edinburgh. I am disappointed to hear that on this occasion we did not meet your expectations, and your experience with breakfast certainly did not reflect the high standards that we pride ourselves on. We would very much like the opportunity to discuss this...

From the moment of arrival to departure, every member of staff could not do enough to ensure our stay was first class. The building itself is quite awe inspiring with its history but it has been so tastefully refurbished. The reception area is amazing and so relaxing. Our room was incredible. The Hotel is very near Princes Street and all...

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
