Stayed here for 3 nights, its ideally situated for all the sites. The staff were friendly and helpfut, the room was clean as was the hotel. I would definately stay here again the only fault was the bed was a bit hard. But if your looking for a very good hotel at a cheap price then stay at this hotel.....

I stayed in a family room with my parents. As long as you can manage stairs (no lift) this is a brilliant hotel for the money. Quiet, clean, friendly and within a short stroll to Princes street! I highly recommend the Abbey hotel.

Staff was friendly, rooms are dated and small, but clean. Lounge in lobby has good prices but nobody in there. Great location 10 min walk to princess ave, 15 to royal mile. 5 min to bars or restaurants. Beautiful garden in the rear for reading or relaxing. Thanks Dillon

Decided to stay overnight in Edinburgh at the last minute. Clean and welcoming rooms, lovely building and friendly staff. Good location and it was pretty easy on the wallet. Would recommend it if you're looking for a bed and a hot breakfast.

I was at the Abbey hotel for a few nights, and had booked a 4-bed room with a group of friends. It's a cute little hotel run by a friendly Scottish couple. However the beds were rather uncomfortable which made it difficult to sleep well. Breakfast is only served from 7.30 to 9am which means you're most likely missing it...

I booked a single room for 7 nights while vacationing in Edinburgh. I got a room one the first floor (second floor if you are an american) facing the garden. The room was nice but not much room for storage. One closet without drawers and a desk with two drawers. A small LCD television with loads of channels and of...

Not a place I will ever cross the threshold again. Given a so called double room in the basement, the skylight outside in the ladder strewn staircase outside stopped it being totally without light. Always needed a light on inside. Also used a spare toilet roll to prop the window open, it didn't stay open on its own. The breakfast...

We booked a 3 night stay and were given room 5, ground floor room with garden views, and were delighted! The managers were so friendly and helpful and lovely to talk to. The breakfast was absolutely fab!! Our room was spotlessly clean as was our en-suite. Had a great sleep in a lovely comfy bed. The location is perfect for...

We really enjoyed our stay in Abbey hotel. Not only the location but also the reasonable price and spacious rooms are big plus. The hosts were extremely friendly and kind. I absolutely love the breakfast and the terrace where we had our tea. Highly recommended.

As the title says, friendly and caring people. Clean rooms, excellent level of service. Could not be more helpful. The choice of breakfast should be enough to satisfy all who choose to stay at here. The quality of the food too was excellent. Thank you.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
