Got a good deal on this hotel through Trivago. Excellent location if you are getting the tram from the airport. Also only about a 5 minute walk from Princess Street. Friendly staff and great breakfast. Only negative thing I would say was room was very hot and faced onto the street so hard to get to sleep at night with... More

Booked this at the last moment at a great price for just one night in early June. It was easy to find, with close parking nearby if you have a car, and well located for shopping and restaurants etc. The guy who checked me in was extremely helpful and nice, and explained all the features of the hotel, something which... We stayed at The Place for one night before leaving to the airport the next morning. The location was very central and a perfect location to many of the sites of Edinburgh. We ended up being upgraded to a larger room which was very spacious and very nice. This may be because we were there during the off season but... More

Me and my boyfriend stayed only for one night at this hotel but we were satisfied. The hotel is good located for railway and bus station and close to the city centre. Our room was clean and had a beautiful view of the city. There is a lovely staff, the receptionist gave a city map and offered us some places... More

I needed a central hotel for a quick trip to Edinburgh with an American friend. The Place is ideally located for public transport being at the end of the tram line from the airport, 5 mins from St Andrews Sq (tour bus), and bus station and 12 mins walk from Waverley station. We had a spacious and stylish twin room... More

We stayed at The Place for the second time after such an excellent stay last July 2013. Unfortunately standards had slipped a tad as our room was small, slightly dusty and there was black mould in the shower tray (Room 3825) which could only be located by climbing four flights of stairs. There were a lot of scuff marks on... More

Dear MervynCarrickfergus, Thank you for taking the time to post a review. Whilst in large it seems you enjoyed your stay, you have highlighted a couple of negative points. I'm sorry that you noticed some scuffs on the walls - these are indeed from luggage and unfortunately sometimes unavoidable. We have had a painter here over the last week touching... More

Good place to stay with all comfort you need. Modern look and several bar/sofa areas. Decent beds and twin room was spacious. Good spot if You'd like to be close to events and sights. St. Honore is walking distance (paris like restaurant with great food). Parking garage across the street for 15gbp/day. Breakfast is decent with most walking buffet and... More

Stayed in The Place first weekend in May. First time in Edinburgh, so it was brilliant that the hotel is so close to most of the sights. We got in early on Saturday and were able to leave our bags at reception. Staff were really helpful and friendly. Room was spacious and comfortable. I could not find anything to fault... More

I stayed here for one night while in Edinburgh on business. My welcome was very friendly and I cannot fault the staff, they were so lovely. My room was on the top floor - if you are staying for more than a couple of nights and have a larger suitcase, then either ask for some assistance up the stairs, or... More

The Place is a marvellous hotel. Extremely spacious. The staff couldn't have been any more pleasant or helpful. The breakfast is really worth paying for. A great destination for seeing Edinburgh. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
