To start off with, I’d like to know what rooms look like the ones that the hotel provide on here because ours certainly didn’t! We stayed in room 503 which overlooked the carpark.
Rather dated room, I guess what I’d expect from a budget hotel HOWEVER, even in budget hotels, I expect to be provided with at least a half decent nights sleep. Half of our mattress was solid, the other side had springs that kept popping every time you rolled over which made for 2 nights of very bad sleep. Paper thin walls - to the point we thought two people were loudly talking outside of our room, turned out they were in the room next door & we could hear every word as if they were in the same room as us!
There was no body wash in the dispenser on the wall of the bathroom and all you were supplied with in the bathroom was a tiny wrapped bar of soap.
The extractor fan was coated in a very thick layer of dust which clearly hadn’t been touched by the cleaners for a very long time.
The only plug sockets were on the opposite side of the room & we had to unplug the TV & light to be able to use them.
Wifi was only available in the public area, if we did want to use it, it was £7 per day!
The staff seemed nice enough, we did have a fire alarm at 1:30 & the whole hotel had to evacuate but the staff dealt with it really calmly and responsibly.
The hotel is further out of the city centre than it seems, was about a 25 minute walk into the centre but it was nice enough of a walk. Not very disabled friendly with the steep slope down to the reception area which is at the back of the hotel, if you come by train, it’s easier to go to Haymarket station rather than the main (Waverley) station as it’s far closer.

We had booked a deal for lion king tickets with a hotel stay with dinner and breakfast so never got choice of hotel. We had a look at the reviews for this hotel and started regretting it and worrying it was going to be awful due to the reviews we had read. But when we arrived the staff all smiled and were friendly (a good few reviews noted rude unhelpful staff) so our opinion started to change then we were given our room number and directed to it, as we made our way there the corridors did stink of bleach and cleaner maybe over done it as was a bit over powering but atleast it meant cleaning had taken place (again reviews stated lack of cleaning and place was meant to be dirty) we got to our room again strong smell of bleach but again room was clean tidy with clean bedding and towels nothing wrong with this. So our opinion of what we would expect changed to thinking happy enough to stay here. I will say the whole building needs updating as it is tired and the windows are starting to rot causing the window frames to be damp. Some of the lighting didn't work or had too many switches to figure out if it did work or not.

We got dinner in our deal so went up and found it was a buffet style service and to be honest the food was edible but wasn't the best. The next-day after a good night's sleep Al be it slightly chilly we went for breakfast which again was a buffet style hot and continental breakfast we went for the hot food which apart from the sausages was good mind their coffee was undrinkable.

So all round our stay was better than expected but the hotel does need updating on every aspect as it is very tired but if your only stating the one night maximum 2 nights it is alright just don't expect 5 🌟 in what I'd describe as a 2 🌟 establishment

Stayed for two nights, very short of staff, receptionist had to double on the bar when we arrived, extra daily charge for parking, bathroom had a leftover bottle of shower gel, damp shower curtain and “yellow” water in the toilet which reappeared in the morning; shower was okay first day but second day no hot water. On day 1 food was pretty standard for breakfast but chef was also distributing into serving area so again short of staff. Buffet was open to use from 8.00 however day 2 no hot buffet, cooked breakfast was served at table which was nice. Overall could be a lot better on the staff front.

This hotel was absolute value for money. We stayed for four nights and it was perfectly ok. It was clean and the bed was comfy. What more could you want for the money. Like most people we used the room to wash up and get ready to go out and explore. It is slightly out of town but it’s so cheap for Edinburgh and an Uber is roughly £4 to the town. The shower was powerful and hot and when you needed new towels or toilet paper we just asked at reception. They were happy for us to order a takeaway after a long day and use their tables downstairs to sit and eat at. Parking is absolute value at £5 for 24hours. Some reviews say it is slightly rough around the edges but we found everyone friendly and for us who just wanted to explore Edinburgh castle and enjoy the fringe festival it was perfect.

Edinburgh is a magnificent city.

Hotel is very poor.

No porterage
Locked outside had to wait to be let in
No phone in room
No hairdryer
Shower water stays in bowl
No towel racks
No bathroom towel to stand on
Breakfast are passable but orange juice is watered down.
Dinners are gruesome, most things running in fat and beef stew my dog wouldn't be able to chew it was that tough.
Only 2 sockets in room, have to unplug light and kettle to charge phones
Bedside light not working
There is no room service while we are here (Monday night til Friday morning)
No fresh towels and no tea, coffee or milk being refreshed.

All in all poor with an arrogant manager.

If Shearings/Leger use this Hotel it can only add to their poor reputation as well.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel as a Valentine's weekend with National Holidays.

Due to her disabilities, we requested a disabled friendly room. On arrival, we discovered our request had been successful. The room had a wet room where the shower sprayed onto the floor rather than a tray with lip, and safety handles, red pull cords and a lower level basin.

As it was Valentine's day, we didn't eat evening meal in the hotel. On the Saturday morning, I was surprised to find they only had ordinary sausages and no Larne square sausages, but the rest of the breakfast was good.

We didn't eat in the restaurant any more as Saturday was a day of sightseeing and we decided to visit another restaurant and then a pub. Also after being recommended another restaurant for breakfast, I chose to eat there.

We walked everywhere during our visit and despite my partner's disabilities, we were on Prince's Street within 15 minutes.

In summary, if you're looking for a clean, basic hotel, within easy walking distance of Prince's Street, I can recommend the Britannia.

To be honest not a bad hotel.

Would give it a 2 for the hotel itself really dated mix and match furniture, these days it could be reclassified as a boutique hotel I suppose.

We had a room on the third floor, have to say it was clean turned the old fashioned lamp on the shade fell off. After fixing that went for a drink in the bar. The bar was not too busy and the prices for a hotel were cheaper than some pubs in Edinburgh, the barmaid was amazing very polite and friendly.

The evening meal was ok especially when you find out that the hotel has no chef and the manager is doing all the cooking is not a chef, the waiting staff are good and really put in a shift.

As I mentioned the extra rating is for the hard work all of the staff put in to make sure you are looked after during your stay, we stayed for 2 nights and found the staff go above and beyond.

Britania hotels need to start doing some TLC here as well as recognising the work the staff do whatever they get paid I am sure isn't near enough.

People who complain need to do the maths bed, breakfast and evening meal for 2 nights including coach travel through Caledonian Travel cost £220. You couldn't get a half decent room in Edinburgh for the total cost over an Easter weekend.

We booked this hotel as a group for a long weekend. Upon arrival we was met by the reception staff who made us aware check in was not until 4PM so we decided to head out and come back later that afternoon. When we arrived back at the hotel we was met by two different receptionist’s we gave our booking details and was told no rooms are available wait in the lounge area and come back in 10 - 15 minutes so we did. After going back to the check in we was told they are still cleaning rooms one of them is available but the other two still need to be found and cleaned so when my friend stated this is not acceptable and we have been waiting longer then stated we received a reply off so has everyone else we are under staffed! When we finally got to our room keys we asked which ones are the twin and which is the double the staff’s reply was I don’t know check and if it’s wrong don’t come back till tomorrow or you have to wait again. How can you allocate rooms without knowing which is what? After finally arriving to our rooms almost an hour and half after the check in time we found out we had been giving one twin and two doubles so went back down stairs and was issued a new room straight away without any wait. The rooms were of average size one had a newly fitted bath room which was good but not cleaned properly which let it down the beds are extremely uncomfortable and the pillows are like concrete blocks the noise from the other rooms keep you awake so it’s impossible to get a full nights sleep. The rooms are not cleaned at all throughout your stay and no new towels or essentials like toilet role is replaced which again you would expect to be done when in a hotel. No phones in rooms also so you have no contact to reception unless you go direct and the tv has minimal channels. Give this place a swerve and book elsewhere.

The positives : The room was basic but functional, really quiet at night and the one night we had food it was very nice and reasonably priced. The hotel was in a good location, 10 minute walk to the city centre.
The negatives: The room was worn, grubby and in need of an urgent refurb.
The room was never cleaned nor the towels replaced even though we left the sign out asking for them to be. The staff on the front desk weren't the most welcoming when we arrived or through our stay. The outside grounds had rubbish all around it which spoiled what could have been a lovely view of the river running next to our window.
We wouldn't stay in this hotel unfortunately again.

This hotel should be closed down....How it passes any kind of test beats me.....someone described it as a prison great description....Bedroom tiny no wardrobe just small rod sticking out from wall.
Restaurant and I am being polite there tables packed tightly together so you can hardly move.
Entertainment if you can call it that artist singing for 2 hrs with 30 mins break.
The young staff did their best smiling and courteous
I would never stay here again.

They do have irons. The one in a room I had left it’s mark on the floor, but I would advise staying somewhere else.
