We typically spend three to five weeks visiting family who live in Scotland. On our way home we try and find a nice hotel to spend a relaxing evening before flying out of Edniburgh Airport the next day. We have stayed at several good locations, and even stayed at the Glasshouse on our last trip in November of last year....

Stayed when attending a wedding in the area. During our stay we loved the room, breakfast excellent, staff on the whole very good, fabulous setting. However after we left found I'd been over charged by £300+. Initially, as it was after hours when I discovered the issue, there wasn't anyone who could deal with the issue and no one responded...

Modern and stylish hotel with the added feature of a rooftop garden with views. Room was spacious and comfortable with no noise disturbance from outside traffic or other rooms. Staff were exceptional. Friendly, professional and helpful but not intrusive.

This is our second visit to the Glasshouse. We were excited as the first time we were wow what a fabulous hotel. It is still a lovely hotel but is maybe slightly tired in areas. Our room was ok (no. 63) but the hotel and rooms in general lack attention to detail. The heating in the room was extremely noisy,...

We stayed here last summer, it was a perfect location! Walking distance from anywhere we decided to go. It's in the heart of the city yet once you reach your room you are in another world. Very peaceful, just open your door and walk out to a beautiful park like setting on the top of the hotel. Walk through the...

The hotel staff were very polite and helpful, the bathroom and the rooms were very lovely decorated. The roof top terrace was amazing, due to winter weather though we didn't get much time up here. Only downside was breakfast, both poached eggs came with a lot of the white still uncooked, which was offputting

WOW ! Got married on Monday and wanted a few nights away and this is where we booked after my daughter has stayed in the past. We've visited Edinburgh before so knew exactly how to find it from Waverley train Station, a quick 10 minute walk. On entering the reception, we were greeted with such warmth. On booking in, they...

The Glasshouse made my partner's 50th really special - we really appreciated the room upgrade and the bottle of Prosecco! Really nice touches. We thought the hotel was just stunning, the staff were really friendly and helpful, and we loved our room looking on to the roof garden, very comfortable, clean & stylish. The food was great too, esp the...

Stayed at the Glasshouse for a night on a business trip to Edinburgh - initially motivated to find an alternative to the lousy proposal my travel agent made. Alterier motive was to test hotels of the Marriott group and to test a new style / design hotel. My experience at the Glasshouse was mixed: great facade, boring reception, conservative but...

Our travel agent, who books all our international travel, including hotels, booked us at this hotel for our initial arrival/stay after spending our first week in London. We were ready to hit the ground running and this hotel fit the bill as far as location/access to many of the major tourist attractions we had on our itinerary. It's walking distance...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
