Wouldn’t recommend this hotel at all... We were showed up the ancient carpeted stairs to our twin room, just the 5 floors up. There is no lift so you may want to pack your climbing boots for the occasion. The banister on the staircase was also very low so would not recommend to anyone with kids, afraid of heights or...

Short stay at the Thistle, location was good and a short walk into the city centre. Room was clean and comfortable but the hotel in general is a little run down. Continental breakfast was basic but enough options there. We had an issue on arriving in our room where the TV did not work. Arriving back later in the evening...

My friend and I stayed for 3 nights at this hotel which was picked at random and did not disappoint. It is ideally located for main transport links into the city centre in a quiet location. Our room was right at the top of the stairs at the back of the house overlooking neighbouring gardens. The room was clean and...

Stayed for two nights whilst visiting friends in Edinburgh. My flight didn't arrive until 23.00 from Heathrow, so finally got to the hotel at 23.45.The young man on reception should of finished his shift at 23.00, but happily stayed on to let me in! Lovely touch when he offered to carry my case to my room especially considering it was...

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
