What you see is not quite what you get. On the outside, a Georgian facade with classical columns, swish street signs and glass doors. Going inside, rather indifferent, sometimes absent but efficient staff; a warren of modern corridors; small basic rooms with a clever bathroom door that you might find in a caravan and, in general, what you need, barring...

Hello kenis201, Thank you for your recent stay and for taking the time to write a review. While we are pleased to read that you liked the facade of our hotel, it is regrettable that the breakfast area and size of rooms was not to your liking. Very attentive and helpful staff and generally a very enjoyable weekend. Location is superb and I was particularly impressed with the lovely thick curtains in the rooms that blocked out the early morning light. However, very disappointed with breakfast – in fact two of my friends went out for breakfast on the Sunday morning. The cooked breakfast consisted of scrambled...

Travelled up to Edinburgh and stayed at the Holiday Inn; perfect location opposite the playhouse and Omni centre. Staff were very keen to please at all times. The family room had a double and a sofa bed, and was cleaned and restocked every day.

I visited Edinburgh on business last month and stayed at the holiday inn express. Location wise, it was perfect, although finding the car park was a bit of a challenge. The hotel was clean and my room was particularly spacious. Value for money, the Holiday Inn Express was exceptional

Stayed here 1 night in January, location ideal, right opposite Playhouse Theatre and lots to see and do nearby. Staff were very pleasant, room fairly basic but more than adequate for a short stay. As others have mentioned the TV had very limited channels. Not a major issue as we weren't there to watch TV but unexpected when staying in...

Room was good but the only power point I could find was at the workstation - the other side of the room from the mirror so using a hot brush to style my hair was a challenge. Shower room was very clean - room had a couple of stains. Staff were good and helpful. I was on the 4th floor...

Spent the night here in February. Very clean fresh rooms. The breakfast was included in the price and was lovely. The only draw back was the TV. Of all the channels available only about half worked. Only annoyed cause I couldn't find a film to watch after a night out. Definitely wouldn't stop me staying again though.

I haven't stayed in a HIX for a few years, but you know exactly what you get and this was no exception. I was lucky and managed to grab a room in a good sale so value for money was fantastic. Location is fantastic with lots on your doorstep - great if attending a show at The Playhouse Theatre. Staff...

Dear John R, I am glad to see that the majority of your stay was a good experience, however i'm sorry to read that the walls let so much noise into your room, I have passed this information on to my General Manager and is pending inspection to ascertain what can be done to fix this. Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
