We stayed here as a family for 6 nights. This guest house is in a Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh's New Town and is one and a half blocks from Princes Street directly north of Edinburgh Castle so could not be better located. Restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, shopping and attractions abound in this area. Tessa and David, the hosts, are exceptionally...

My husband and I are in out 40s and stayed here three nights during a two week tour of Ireland and Scotland. Our objective was to spend about $150 (USD) per night on rooms, which we were hoping would would result in nice, but not luxurious, accommodations. This approach worked extremely well -- except for 53 Frederick Street. 53 Frederick...

Thanks for taking the time to review us. We regret that we did not cater for your needs this time unfortunately we can not please everyone in our own homely style but we do keep it to the highest standard of cleanliness. Our Georgian Townhouse is over 230 years old and was redecorated in June of this year, so we...

This was the 2nd time we stayed here. First was 3 years ago. Very friendly and helpful owners. Clean large rooms. Nice lounge where you can sit and relax, although we were there during the Fringe so had no time for that. Ideally located 2 mins from Princes Street. We were there with another couple, who were equally impressed. Our...

I have stayed here twice now, once with my husband and the other time I was one of four ladies. The rooms both times have been clean and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. It is right in the centre of Edinburgh, perfect for shopping and close enough to stp half way in case you have bought too much!!...

My husband and I stayed at 53 Frederick Street for two nights from 15th July. The B&B is wonderful! It is super clean and the room where we stayed in was really big. The owner is very friendly and helpful. The B&B is in an ideal location and easily accessible from the train station (short walking distance). The atmosphere is...

Recently returned from Edinburgh after a 4 night stay at 53. This was our second stay in the last 12 months and once again it was excellent. Tess and David are helpful and hospitable, the rooms large, clean and comfortable and breakfast in Ricks first class. You will struggle to find a better location for central Edinburgh at a reasonable...

We stayed here for 3 nights and picked it on the basis of the central location. The airport bus stops very close by, it's just off Princes Street and within easy walking distance of the Old Town, shops, restaurants and the city's excellent bus service. The owners were very friendly and helpful. Our room didn't have an en suite but...

Brekky at Rick's downstairs was great and the managers were very helpful with parking issues and using their phone. We were there on the weekend so parked outside on the street. I can imagine parking would be an issue on weekdays, however. Nice big room with high ceilings and a good location from which to explore Edinburgh. Decor a smidge...

This is an excellent choice if you want to stay in the lovely New Town at an affordable rate. Thanks to this being a Georgian building, the rooms are spacious and high-ceilinged. The included breakfast at Rick's next door is very good. Numerous eateries, pubs and shops all within an easy walk. Tess was very helpful.

This was my second time to stay at No53. I stayed here a year ago with a group of friends for a stag and recently with my wife. The property has two parts to it and they do very well to keep the night owls away from couples and families. Both times I found the B&B to be great value,...

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
