Just back from an overnight here. Brilliantly priced hotel for the location. Less than 5 minute walk to the Playhouse theatre, 10-15 minutes to Princes Street and Waverley Station. Room was spacious, clean and very comfortable offering everything you would need or expect from a hotel....good shower too and very clean. Really excellent breakfast too, quality food, plentiful and delicious...

Such lovely accommodation. We stayed for one night but were able to check in straight away when we got there at 11 am and go to our room. Fiona provided us with a map of the city and pointed out the best routes to the centre which was very useful. Our room was just what we needed, very nicely decorated...

We enjoyed our stay. Fiona was very welcoming and helpful in showing us the local sites. The breakfasts in the morning was lovely and filling - we had the waffles and bacon and the full Scottish breakfast! Being cold during this time, it was so lovely having heating on throughout the hotel, especially in our room. Our bed was a...

We spent three nights at this hotel. It is perfect for a weekend as tourists in Edinburgh: good position and quality/price rate. Delicious breakfast and super polite staff. Fiona and Freddie are both very kind and helpful.

The room was warm and cosy, and the owners friendly and helpful. Th hotel was in a quiet location, but very convenient for the station and shops and the sights. The breakfast the following day was delicious. I hope to return to Edinburgh next year and the Broughton hotel will be my first choice accomodation.

The hosts are very good with a warm welcome and an excellent breakfast. The situation is perfect for those who want to be just away from the hustle and bustle of the centre which is only a few minutes away on foot. Rooms warm and comfortable which was good whemn temp outside was zero! Would recommend

Wonderful location. Close to a variety of amazing restaurants and traditional Scottish pubs. A ten minute walk to the Royal Mile, Princes Street and St Giles Cathedral. Fiona, the host, is fantastic. Helped us decide on our itinerary for the day, recommending Mary King's Close tour and other scenic delights. She made a delicious cooked breakfast, which you can choose...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
