It was the greatest idea to book a room in this hotel. It is running by a family so you can imagine hoy close the treat is. A two-floors hotel with just six bedrooms, so there are problems at all about noises. Traditional scottish breakfast every morning to get enough energy to wander around the city! The location is incredible....

I myself have visited edinburgh on numerous occasions. This time we took the other halfs parents and we wanted somewhere within walking distance but off the busy streets and The Broughton Hotel is perfect for just that. 10 minutes and you are on Princess Street. The Hotel itself is quaint and old, but tasteful. I actually found it because of...

Best breakfast ever, the service was excellent. The hotel location is perfect for a 10 min walk after eating at the city center, there was tea, coffee and hot chocolate waiting for us at the room with nice shortbread cookies and chocolates to finish a great day at Edinburgh... 100% recommended!

We stayed here for three nights over Hogmanay, and enjoyed every second. The location is fantastic; only a five minute walk to the centre, but set back enough so it's peaceful. Fiona and Freddie were both lovely and attentive, and I'd have no hesitation in returning here.

We've just returned from a couple of days away in Edinburgh and would highly recommend this lovely family run bed and breakfast. Freddie and Fiona were warm and welcoming and the room and facilities were great. A short walk to Princes Street and easily accessible to the city attractions. Only downside was having to come home 😔.

We stayed one night and were delighted with the city centre location. So easy to walk to Princes Street in under ten minutes, and a great selection of cafes, bars and shops nearby. The room was lovely and comfortable, Freddie and Fiona were lovely hosts and the breakfast was excellent.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
