I met my parents in Edinburgh and was very fortunate my dad had booked 14 Hart Street as our accommodations. James and Angela were warm and informative hosts, and I was especially grateful for their flexibility given my early morning arrival and departure. Breakfast was delicious, the rooms beautiful and tidy, and the location perfect for exploring the city on... More

I stayed two nights at 14 Hart Street in Edinburgh in late September. I enjoyed it in every respect: the bedroom was lovely, with a fine view of the garden behind the house. I had en suite bathroom, which was immaculate and very nicely appointed. The entire house is beautifully decorated with period furnishings that matched the Georgian architecture. My... More

We had a lovely stay at 14 hart street. The hosts are super friendly and the room was beautiful. It really felt like home and we would love to go back. The location is quiet yet very central, within walking distance of the mail sights in Edinburgh. I would warmly recommend this B&B to anyone.

Staying at 14 Hart Street was like staying at a good friend's home. Our room was cozy and comfortable and the house itself was well located. We could easily walk everywhere we wanted to visit and there were a number of delicious restaurants literally around the corner. Best of all James and Angela were welcoming and helpful hosts. Without James,... More

I cannot praise the accommodation and the owners James and Angela too much. They are so welcoming and made me feel at home from the moment I arrived. I am just so pleased that I booked to stay at their 5 Star ☆☆☆☆☆ B&B and very sad that my 4 nights have flown by. The house is wonderful the bedroom... More

We spent 2 nights at 14 Hart Street and we were more than happy with the place. It is charming and very well run with the most delightful hosts. Be sure to sample Angela's scrambled eggs - they are amazing. We have no hesitation in recommending this establishment to anyone looking to stay at a B & B in Edinburgh.

I stayed for two nights with my daughter ahead of dropping her off at the University of St Andrews. We arrived on an early flight from the states and James met us and let up drop our bags and directed us to a great little coffee spot just around the corner (lots of shops and restaurants all around) The rooms... Stayed 2 nights for the Book Festival. James and Angela had been very helpful when booking, and the welcome was equally warm. My room was in the basement - so quiet, and easy walking distance of the main Princes Street and airport tram stop in York Place. Elegant, quiet, clean, great breakfast - top marks! I would love to return... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
